FramerateFollow

I have a problem with my framerate as it is alwyas at 10 or below. Would an increase in RAM help at all?

I have a T2484 emachines computer with a pretty good ATI graphics card. The graphics card is 128mb and thats the max my comp can take (or so my father says). I can still upgrade my computer to have 256 more mb of RAM. 1012 is the limit on MB for my comp (it has 2 slots for RAM chips and again my father says its the limit but I'm not 100% sure hes right).

Would increasing the RAM by 256mb have a dramatic change to the framerate or any change?

Again, I'm not sure at all whether having a 256mb graphics card would be too much for my computer. I have seen 1012mb RAM cards which would make it 2024mb but I'm not sure if it can go past 1012... I need help! Smiley: confused

Your graphics card ram does not count towards the ram cap of the motherboard. I don't see how you can't have a 256 mb, 512 or even higher video card. I don't think there is a cap on video card memory.

The only limitations of what video card you can get is a physical one. There's 3 different slot types, PCI, AGP, and PCI-E (express). All 3 are physically different. I don't recomend the PCI as they are slower in performance. AGP is was the standard. PCI-E is the newest and fastest and is becoming the standard if it isn't already.

I would think that any amount of ram you could put in a machine would make a noticable difference. I would recomend capping the ram on your motherboard.

Also realize that settings inside the game can make a huge difference without upgrading a single thing. One thing I would recomend is turning shadows off. You could go through all your setitngs and adjusting them to increase your framerate.

Ya, turning off shadows will help a ton. Anyways, to the OP...

It almost sounds like your computer isn't as good as you think. The only way you could really have a max of 128 meg video "card" is if it shared with system ram, which means it isn't a card at all.

That is a good place to start with trying to opotimize your settings.

I'd have to go double check, but I think I used to have the exact PC you have... and if i'm right, let me tell you. GET A NEW ONE NOW!

From digging on the emachines website, it doesn't appear you have a video card at all, just a chip-set you are lucky to have run eq2. If you could do me a favor and go to start>run and type in dxdiag and click the displays tab and write down what you see.

Well, I'm not sure if the video card has a set cap to it at all. I'v just been trusting what my father says about it and I'm just thinking he doesn't want to spend more money for a better card. The one I have is a RADEON 9250. I'm pretty sure thats a video card and not a chip set... I dont really even know what a chip set is.

I now realize I know a lot less about computers than I originally thought.

And Tomec, did you want me to post what it says on that display window? And is there a new computer out thats kind of high in performance but with a friendly price tag?

If you could post or PM it to me it would still help. Even if you do have the 9250, there are a still a couple of questions that can answer. It always help when trying to troubleshoot a pc issue to know the stats on that PC. I know you said some things about it, but that is an older model PC so the ability to upgrade it isn't that great really.

As for getting a new one. You could probably get a decent pre-built that will play eq2 better then your old for about 600 bucks, maybe on balanced w/o lag most times. You could pay about 1k and have a system that would probably play it on some of the higher settings if you want.

I'll go browse around and see if I can't find anything and link it for you, in general though you will want to look for:

AMD Athlon or P4 or higher (ANYTHING but a Celeron really, Celeron are sh*t CPUs made for budget PCs and run extremely hot with poor preformance... which is sadly what you'll mainly find in pre-builts, so expect to shell out a little extra)

1gig Ram minimum, if you can upgrade to 2+ you will notice a HUGE preformance increase

256 meg video card, either in AGP or PCI-E slot.

Edit: While i'm not a big fan of pre-built systems, something like this should run eq2 decently. The 990 priced one will decently run eq2, though tossing in another gig of ram (130 extra in their customizing thing) will help a ton. If you don't want a new monitor you can select to not have one shipped, which reduces the cost by 200 bucks. You could use that to toss in a slightly faster cpu or more ram if you want, since both are under 200 bucks.

While, again, i'm not a big fan of pre-built systems, just from a quick search that seems to be a good pc which should run eq2 fairly well right out of the box. Yes, even though it is only a 128 card it will still run fairly well. I have a 128 card and it runs fine.

Before you get into it go to your start menu and click on 'run' then type in dxdiag

It should bring up the directX diagnostics window with tabs. This will tell you your processor, ram, video, sound, etc. Take screenshots of each tab and let us know. It's easier to tell what your working with and what would be the best route and best things to replace.

I kind of told him to do that with his video card (to see if I could find out any more info about it then he gave) but yes, the whole thing would help more. On the whole though, I don't think he can put much into that to make it run eq2 that well.

On a side note, he doesn't have to take screens if he didn't want. He can generate a LARGE text file by hitting "save all info" and post that here.

Hehe, ya it is handy... although it is a HUGE document. They actually have some instructions for it on the Tech Support Forums since sometimes they will ask for your system info. If you click around a little on the tech support forums then you'll probably find one to see what i'm talking about lol.
