That's right another newb thread with newb questions and newb posts.

I was considering checking out EQ2 and was wondering how the 7-day trial isle thing worked. Mainly what limits it has and what happens after the 7 days. Some questions I have;

If I download the trial and then buy the full game would I still get the free 30 days that comes with it? Or would I be jacked to pony up the dough after the 7 day?

Can I send and/or join chat channels from the trial?

What's the difference between the expansions and the adventure packs?

I was thinking if I got the game I'd get this -link- Would anyone recomend any others?

Does Bhodi still smell like ***?

If you buy the game either retail or from Direct2Drive you get free 30 days. The 7 day trial in no way cuts into your free month.

Can I send and/or join chat channels from the trial?

That I am not sure of. If they are hosting it on regular servers now then yes, if not you might have to try cross server tells to chat with people.

Adventure packs are not necessary. Bigger than a patch, smaller than an expansion. You get a zone, couple dungeons/instances, a few quests all for 8$.

Get that one.
Gives you EQ2+KOS expansion for 29.99. Absolutely the best deal. To buy EQ2 and then KOS seperately is probably 50$ all together FYI - You don't have to worry about Desert of Flame expansion until you are lvl 45.

Just to expand a little.

1. The limits on the trial isle aren't as bad as they used to be. It used to be you could get to level 6, now I think it is 9. Although I normally leave about 8ish since I run outa things to do by then. You also can now craft on the trial, but can't get anything besides the level 2 recipies (aka starting). After you buy the full game you WILL still get the 30 days, and also get to keep your character(s) you made.

2. I've not rolled a char on the isle in awhile, and when I have it wasn't the trial, but i'm 99% sure you can. I know the normal chat channels of /ooc (all servers), and the level channels all will work..

3. Like Bhodi said, adventure packs are smaller the an expansion but larger then a normal patch. Think of them as like a mini-expansion. They add several new areas to the game, new loot, items, ect, but aren't as big as an expansion. From what I can tell it is often just like instanced zones.

4. Definately get that one. It's actually supposed to be the only way to get either KoS or the base game anymore, though you will occasionally find just the base games in stores. Base game is 20, that is 30 and INCLUDES the base game. Unlike with DoF, in KoS there are actually things for most any level if you play it right. Even though going up there and fighting is a death sentance, you can still use the expansion to your advantage as early as like 10. At 20 you'll deffinately want it since you can then start gaining Achievment XP, basically think a modified talent system from WoW, with each stat having a "path" to follow with some nifty things. You can use it at like 10 like I said as a "quick warp" between two zones, depending on which of 6 spires you use. Like if you use the one in Commonlands (the "evil" low level zone) you can teleport to Antocia (the "good" low level zone) and back again.

Looking forward to seeing you in game Mental. So was it the barber thing that made you decide to try it out? ;)

LOL no

It was mostly because I quit my EQ raiding guild. My hours at work increased so my play time decreased. That and any raids I did attend I would end up being at least an hour late. Summer being here I've got things going on most of the days that they raid. So I miss out on a lot of the important flagging and progression. It's a great guild and I had a blast with them but just can't work my schedule to raid with them any more. I guess it's pretty hard when they raid east coast time and I'm on the west coast.

WoW has been fun and still is. I enjoy it but when there's nobody on it gets sad (especially when I don't even laugh at my own jokes). I think the remaining alla players are playing on a different server. At least that's my conclusion since nobody really tells me anything. I'd love to reach the higher lvls in wow to experience some of the stuff that I haven't yet, but I don't think I can start over a new toon atm. I really need to get past some of the zones I've been playing a lot in, so I won't be joining anyone on a new server unless it's a transfer.

I did buy the KoS with base package. Installed it and downloaded the patches for 3 hours. Not too bad I've had worse total install time. However when I went to start the game I had directX issue. 30 minutes of browsing and searching I found the solution to the problem and logged onto the game for about 10-15 min. The graphics is something I'll have to get used it, they're a little bit disturbing.

I was reading about classes and races on SOE's site. They stated somewhere that any race could be any class and used a dark elf ranger as an example. Sweet I can be a Dark Elf monk! What a bunch of crap. Dark Elves have to be evil and monks have to start in Qeynos. SOE lies!

I also joined two chat channels "asylum" and "assylum". I don't think anyone else was on but I couldn't tell. I'm still trying to figure out how the whole chat thing works.

Overall I think the graphics and UI is going to be the hardest to get used to.

Betrayal quest FTW. An Dark Elf Assassin will turn into a Ranger once the quest is complete. Not that we need another ranger, thats my Kool-Aid. Also any race can be any class in that a gnome can be a tank, rather than just barbarians, trolls, ogres etc.

Make sure its "Asylum" and that you are on "Blackburrow" server. In order to talk in it you have to type "/x" where "x" is the number assigned to the channel. You will see the number next to the channel name everytime a person speaks in the channel. So example for me its "/2"

Having DSD show me around for the first time helped a lot. Everything is customizable so click around and fix it to your liking. Checking out eq2interface.com and installing EQ2 map and a UI compilation helped tonnes also.

Going in order of the quote:

How are the graphics disturbing? It is definately a big change from WoW's, since it isn't all "cartoony" and such, but I like it. To each their own I guess.

Technically, any race can be any class... just some are more complicated to do then others. You CAN be a DE monk, but you have to betray over to Qeynos as a (I think) Bruiser. Whatever the second evil only fighter is that isn't Shadowknight, since i'm 99% sure those become paladins.

I know there was someone new on the Asylum earlier... was that you? Anyways, if not, it works basically the same way as in wow... with /#ofchannel text to chat. To see who is on a channel you can use /whochannel # and it'll bring up a list. Nothing really special I can think of other then that.

The UI does take a bit of getting used to, but overall is very nice. You can change the opacities/posistions of EVERYTHING if you wanted. You can also download UI mods (like in WoW) though most are total over-hauls of how the UI looks... like the Profit UI Reborn. I would suggest getting the EQ2 Map Mod. It is very easy to use, and will change all the settings you need for a custom ui (since you actually have to go into the eq2.ini and modify it to load a custom ui) and will keep the mod up to date if you use that AU.

On a side note I use Profit Reborn UI, I love it. Two complaints are a)has a odd habit of popping up new chat tabs every time i log in which i have to remove b) The new update (06/14) has a wonky XP bar that needs to be fixed.

It might have been me. I tried doing a /list 4 command but my character just kept listening. I couldn't figure out how to list who all was in the channel.

As for the disturbing graphics the character models and terrain seemed a little odd. I found a sick deer that was fatter than my big lazy dog. I can handle most graphics since I have a lot of experience with them and I consider gameplay > graphics. I'll just to have to see how it plays out.

I was always a little bit of a critic of the EQ2 graphics. However I have been won over.

If only for the weather alone. In wow you could barely see weather affects. In EQ2 its impressive, I was running around in the Sinking Sands (desert) and a dust devil weather effect went by me and I was like "Oooooh" then it hit me and tossed my character 30 feet and I was like "OMG awesome". Or seeing my characters hair blowing in the breeze, just amazing.

Well what is your char name? Anyways, as for the graphics... maybe the detail is too low or something? I think the graphics look pretty damn nice in the game personally. THey are pretty real imo.

Well, I rolled one... but decided to delete him after the starter isle lol. It just played a bit too much like my brig for my liking.

About Profit UI.... The exp bar is on Sony's end (the known issues say sony is sending wrongly rounded exp data) and as for the chat channels, that doesn't happen to me with the UI, though i've had it happen in the past. it is a fairly simple fix, though it does involve a little work. That pop-up tab has been set (somehow) to the defualt tab, so every time you start up it loads that. IIRC that is. The solution is to just pull it onto your main chat window, and then go through and select the options for something like, say Combat (since it is just two check boxes) and then delete the old combat tab. Should be fixed. Right-clicking and then hitting "always chat here" could work also. Not sure.

Personally, i've got a couple other problems with it... including the (again SoE caused) maintained spell window to flicker. I've also gotten some "phantom channels" as I call them, where the channel number is in use, but I can't see the channel at all. Every now and then the mob health % number will dissapear too.

Its the problem from the whole 'choose your class' deal. All scouts are pretty similar and don't truly start to branch off until lvl 20-30.

Ya, I did notice that... maybe once my brig is higher i'll try rolling one again or something Smiley: lol but for right now i'd kind of like to stick to alternate arch-types when rolling alts. Though about the only one I haven't tried is priest atm...

Mental if youre looking to make a DE monk, roll a bruiser first then work on the betrayal quest. A bruiser will turn into a monk.

Get on the blackburrow server and type /join asylum

To talk in it, type /1 or whatever # the channel is.

To see who is in the channel at the time type /whochannel# # being whatever number /asylum is. It will list everyone who is in there.

Once you and I catch up online together, Ill meet up with you and helo you settle up your options graphic wise if youd like.

If you want to add names to your friends list, hit ALT Y. Throw me on there if youd like, under the name Faiille.

Usually a double negative would make it a positive. It's not the case with a gnome ranger. Smiley: tongue

Well that id due to Sony sending bad data... I'm not sure what piece of data is bad, I think it is that little bar thingy when you hold your mouse over that shows the %. You could probably delete the modified exp bar if you wanted, and that should bring back the old bar. You could also delete everything from the profit ui and go back to the base UI... then look for that exp xml and pop that into the profit and it should work. I may look into this a little later today because it has been pissing me off a little too. I nromally don't go into situations where I have to mini-ding to live, especially since as I got higher in level it seemed like (even with the base UI) those mini-dings weren't coming when I thought they would.
