New game install question?Follow

#1 Jun 16 2006 at 2:56 PM Rating: Decent
I just got the game yesterday. I began installing the cd's at 2:30 p.m. Everything was done and I was playing the game at 6:30 p.m. Does this sound unusual to anyone else? All of the other MMO's I have played have taken 7-9 hours to download everything. I was just wondering if something could be wrong with it or is it possible? It worked fine, I made it to level 7! Thanks!

1. whats your connection speed?

2. Did you buy any of the expansions with the game?

I'd also like to add:

3. Did you enable any extra content download from the launcher? Like VO packs and such.

If you didn't buy any expansions with the game, then a short update like that is very possible if you're on a decent connection. I don't have Desert of Flames, but do have Kingdom of Sky, which I bought AFTER the base game (long story) and both updates only took me about 3 hours or so on DSL.

Well, you may have a quicker pc/connection then him... for KoS and the base game that does seem a little low, but I wouldn't call it impossible. If you're really worried (even though everything seems to be running fine) then try posting this on the eq2 official forums under their tech support thingy. Maybe some TSR can help you more.

When I bought game + kos the install/patch took 5 hours. That is only because my disc was scratched and I had to download the game directly from SOE and then it had to install KOS for me.

So no, the time isn't crazy fast or anything.

Took me like 1hr to do full update from base game (no expansions) with the extra options off. I want to get those voice packs sometime, but they seem to be far larger then the actual update patch. I think it estimated like 9hr to download all the extra stuff :S. But whenever I update it will start with an estimate of like 10hr, and fall to 1hr within 10mins.

I bought my "Kingdon of Sky with original game" and "Desert of Flames",each bought seperatly. Installed it Sunday afternoon, now here it is Thursday at noon and still have 39 hours of patch to dl yet. I had the computer running nonstop since Sunday and the download cancelled itself a couple of times, setting me back by a large amount of hours. What really sucks is I'll be away from home all next week and won't be able to play. I'll be lucky if I can create any characters before I leave.

Try opening the client, cancling the download if it starts. Click preference and make sure all the optional stuff is off. Leave only Additional Live Game Content on. This will allow you to download only what you need to play the game, and will reduce the download time. If you have already disabled these, then I guess you have to either wait it out.

Upgrading your connection would also do the trick, but that depends on where you live, and cost of doing so. I live in Canada where appariantly we are a bit advanced in internet connections due to it being easier to set-up such connections in a region with a smaller population, thus the reason why America has more dial-up companies since everyone has a phoneline, but not every area has enough cable/dsl lines to support everyone in the region. However this may have changed, I know this was a fact like 3-5 years ago, but I've seen a lot more cable/dsl commercials showing up on american tv channels.

I live in a heavily populated and growing suburb of a major U.S. city and I can't get DSL becase I'm too far from a phone switch. I find that completely absurd.

Luckily I don't want DSL because my 3Mb cable connection is only $30.00 a month with my TV package.

I only looked into DSL because I was considering switching to sattelite TV until I checked them out. (Don't let them con you into thinking they're cheaper than cable. And about all I watch is included on demand programming (HBO, Showtime, etc.) which sattelite doesn't have.)

Derailingly yours,

For wanting to download the extras. You can set the option to download while playing. I havnt tried it to see how it works though because I have always been up to date. I just saw the option in there.

Thank you so much,it seems to be working. My DL just dropped from 37 hours down to 16 hrs when I turned all those extra options off. If only I had gotten this advice a few days ago,I'd be playing right now. LOL
