I'm thinking of getting into eq2 (been a long time eq1 player) and am leaning towards making a Kerra Ranger (I played a VS bst in eq). With my reading on the boards here I've noticed that rangers seem to be the pullers in eq2, is that true? How much would you say rangers use bow over mellee? Thank you in advance for answering.

My ranger is currently around lvl 42 and yes, we can pull just fine but our strong point is DPS. Often in this game, the tank will also pull leaving the scout types free to stealth and prepare for a good back stab as the mob arrives.

As far as how much I use my bow, well... I use it a lot! I can even kill a decent con mob (say blue or white) with the bow alone. Between combat arts, bow procs and poisons I get a lot of damage out of ranged combat.

But I still get to melee as much as I'd like to. If I feel like letting the mob close and doing the slice-and-dice dance, then I put the bow away and carve him up! When I feel like reaching out to touch someone, I snare and kite with my bow.

It just gives me more options...

Up until a recent update I was able to kite mobs by snare, backup shot, snare etc. Now it seems that when I run backwards I run slower then the snared mob. Also the the snare does not last long at all. Could someone tell me the way to kite now that they have nerfed running backwards?

Secret to kiting now is to maximize your damage output. Make sure you are using the best poison you can afford (player crafted rare if you can hack the cost). Also carry the best wepons and keep your combat arts upgraded to at least adept 1. (I keep as many of my arts as I can at adept3 and/or master.) And finally, examine your arts to see which ones doo the most damage and always lead with them.

Poison, bow and weapon procs and your best CAs will account for a lot more damage than straight melee ever can.

You're right that stun doesnt work as well as it use to, but if you stock up on the right types of poisons you'll do fine. I use Grandmaster's Stupefying which stuns and Grandm. Hemotoxin which poison DoT. Sometimes i use G. Gracelessness which decreases agi. Works rather well before I even get a chance to use my stun skill. The more damage you can do before the mob gets to you the better. I do use my stun skill though so I can back up and hopefully get one arrow off and if the mob isnt heroic+ it usually works pretty well. Oh and dont forget you get Thorny Trap at lvl 52 and that is a pretty good root too. And if you feel like you need the extra dmg whip out Hawk Dive, but of course you have to lvl your toon to those lvls to get the extra skills so you can pretty much stick to poisons and arrows til then...;)

Rangers are really strong, especially this three group me and a friend group got going:

Ranger Pulls with AE range attack and tanks. (yes, it seems odd, but it works, you'll see why).

Swashbuckler and Warlock AE dps the hell out of them and then /assist pick mobs off ranger.

This can take anywhere from 12-34 seconds to down a white ^^ heroic encounter (3-4 mobs, 4th mob takes longer due to art cool down). To be honest, the ranger is the heart of this group when it comes to doing the job because he also puts out alot of dps.

/edit:
I forgot to mention that rangers are really good at soloing, with their ability to stealth and dish hard damage, dodge, kite, choose between a defensive and offensive stance makes them very durable and versatile, an overall great choice for a beginner.

Raidwise, Rangers are usually not the pullers unless you need to pull where you dont have LoS. IN most standard groups the tank will be pulling. A ranger does more damage at range than in close. A lot more damage.

If you plan on being a soloer I suggest you look into a swashbuckler or a brigand (evil version). THese are the rogues or the tank scout. THey do more damage up close and personal than a ranger does. Rangers are considered predators (assassins in freeport) and have their high damage arts from the rear.

Any scout works well in a group though. If you prefer ranged attacks then go ranger if you prefer to be up close then go assassin, swashbuckler, or brigand. Rangers can solo, but, your ability is limited as you level. If your ranged attacks do not do enough damage before the mob gets close you may be taking the famous ranger gate!

There is no such animal as a beastlord in EQ2 and for me, I am glad, I always felt the beastlord really messed up the class balance in EQ1. People loved to play them because well they were overly powerful! Hell I even had one! If you really want a great soloing machine and can avoid the pull of the scout classes, the monk and bruiser classes do a lot of damage and are able to tank. I have a monk in EQ2 and they are almost an easy button in soloing. Their combat style is similar to the beastlord as well, unarmed and sticks!

Rangers = crappy tanks

Tanking is more than ranged pulling...

If you played a tank at all for any length of time, you know that u cant pull upper level mobs with a bow and arrow. Or you end up pulling the entire room/zone... Social NPC's are more prevelent at higher levels but u seem them in some low areas.

most pulls have to be done with a "body" pull... walk up slowling and pull them back so they dont aggro their social buddies. So in that case, a ranger is worthless as a puller... need a swashy who can then deliver massive DPS from up front...

Now if social mobs aren't a problem, then ranger might be able to pull, or tank... but if you have a swashy in the group... then use the swashy to pull and have the ranger in the back delivering massive DPS...

Point is.. can Raners do damage up close... yes... does it suck compared to their ranged DPS... ABSOLUTELY...
