I love this post: it is exactly what I needed. I played EQ2 with my husband for the first six months and got very frustrated doing access quests only to find out that we (as a couple) could not enter the zone without a group of three or more. Also was a bit frustrated with the fact that by the time you did an armor quest you had outleveled the usefulness of the armor. I loved the graphics, music and tradeskilling, although having to have multiple alts just to do all of the subcombines was tedious. We went back to EQ1 (which in some ways is morphing into EQ2). We have a brother-in-law we hooked on EQ1 and so now we thought we might take another look at EQ2, since we have a threesome to enter the group only zones.

A couple of questions:

I read in a gaming magazine something about the ability to talk directly with other players via a headset...if this is true can someone speak to this issue? Or is the voice thing only a set of voice macros like the EQ1 "Greet","Heal Me" etc. macros?

Do you still need to buy new armor every 10 levels or so?

Do you need to be in a guild to get into the best housing or are you able to gain entrance based on good tradeskilling etc.? If you do writs does it help your status as an individual or only if you are part of a guild?

You get a big discount on larger houses if you're in a level 30 guild, but you can still buy one if you're not guilded. You just pay more up front and each week, in coin and personal status. You can see what a house will cost you by double clicking on the door.

You can get status doing adventure or tradeskill writs and by doing heritage quests, and a few other ways.

Maybe an update to the "EQ2's economy has not been ruined by plat farmers, and is quite healthy." line to say "Unfortunately the transmute system is taking care of that quite nicely."

I KID!

At the moment, you're right. I'm waiting to see how this settles out.

I understand you're kidding, sort of, but lest we scare any new players away, there are mitigating factors. This only impacts fabled, legendary and especially treasured items. It should effect Mastercrafted but people seem to be ignoring the fact that they can be transmuted. There are alternatives to the effected gear that you can get at sane prices in regular crafted (slightly worse than treasured/adept) and Mastercrafted (slightly better... usually). Plus this is effectively a redistribution of wealth - as long as rich players are buying transmutable items for ridiculous prices, newbies can sell the ones they get that they can't use for ridiculous prices, so they can afford the alternatives. There's also a market at lower tiers for regular crafted items that the last major crafting change had totally killed, so if you care to take up a tradeskill you can make money there too.

Very great post, extremely informative. Please disregard my signature for this reply.

One question remains though:

First of all, I craft naked

Besides the general appreciation from players passing by, why?? Do you die enough crafting to make that relevant?

Craft Naked

Quote:
A little background: There is a basic rule in the way buffs work in the crafting instance. It is this; when you cast a crafting buff, (that costs power), instead of being a fixed cost, (like 50 or 80 points of mana), it will cost you a fixed percentage of your available power pool. This will vary depending on the level of the caster but is typically between 10 & 15% of your pool. (This, by the way, is also the reason you can't "lean" on those power consuming buffs throughout an entire combine. With a total of 8 or 10 uses before you are out of power, you could never get through a pristine combine if you hit it every pulse!)

I'm not doing it to avoid the wear and tear death has on equipment, but for the power pool regeneration and replenishment effects. I haven't died crafting since they nerfed the forge, long time passing.

Trappins link explains it all, Clarissa.

Plus it's really hot in front of that forge. But for modesty's sake I'm not actually naked. I do wear fireproof gloves and my smithy's tool belt.

Awesome guide. I love the part that compares it to other MMO's. Never seen anything written from quite that perspective before.

Besides normal regen...drinks/totems etc replenish your power at fixed amounts as well. So if you are using up percentages of your power pool using counters and replenishing at fixed jumps (naturally and/or with drinks/totems etc..)you are better off with the smaller power pool.

Thanks for the great info. I've been searching for a comparison on which game to start and this is the best post I've read. I almost went for WoW but I couldn't get over the cartoonish look of the game. I know it's a fantasy game but I'd like to at least view it in a more realistic perspective. Anyways, good post and though I'm still waiting for the patches to finish I'm glad I bought this game :)

The Access Quests are in game and do provide iteams that are fairly nice, and the quests are fun, but not alot of people do them.

you need to correct this:
Lore and Legend - Dig into the history and anatomy of a monster race, ostensibly to better defeat them, though no such benefit is granted by granting you the ablity to use a Creature Mastery attack(ie Master Strike for mages) on that particular creature type. Usually started by inspecting items in the world. You need to get auto-updates for 3 things accomplished only by killing the MoB's. You also need to collect 5 body parts that drop off the MoB type (When inspected it will read "can be used to learn more about the ____"). You can get the drop items when you do not have the quest. They sell to NPC's for a few copper and can be purchased from other players via the broker. Awards experience and a book and a special display-only weapon that can be placed in your home.
