BEWARE OF THE FFXI SCAM (to anyone thinking about re-signing up with the game)

I reactivated my account on April 30th, and just received my bill. Because I signed up in April, I was charged for the full month of April. And then on May 1st, they charged me for the full month of May. There is nothing you can do about this. Even though I signed up with only 12 hours left in the month, I am to pay the full months fees. This is also why they probably released the game later in the month, to milk all of us for extra cash.

My friend/co-worker who re-activated only a few days before me, received the exact same bill as I.

Also beware when cancelling your account. The only way to get them to stop charging your card is to call up. Deleting your account is not enough, as you will still be charged.

These people are thieves.

on posting this in the FFXI forums, I was amazed to find people DEFENDING this action, perfectly okay with the fact that this is the only company that expects you to install the game on the first of the month in order to get your money's worth. It is the only game that I know that does this, and it is archaic and bad customer handling.

Yea as bad as SOE is if you pay for your subscription on April 28th its good for 30 days at least.

If you contact your credit card company they might reverse the charges if you can prove it was fraud. My friend did this once with Everquest 1. Basically at the time Luclin has just came out and for some reason it just didn't run right on his PC (everything checked out tech wise). After argueing with SOE customer service etc they finnally told him it won't work. Well he had just reactived a account and paid for 90 days. Of course SOE throws the EULA in his face telling him its not refundable. Well U.S. Laws supercede some game companies TOS/EULA. His credit card company told him if they are unable to provide the service for any reason they have to refund the money. His credit card company got the money back for him within like 5 days or so.

This has been common knowledge/practice since the October 2003 PC release in North America. Sucks but its not like its a secret.

When I left in May of '04 I just went through the playonline browser and cancelled my account just like FAQ/Manual recommends and never got any further billing, there was no need to call.

I did the same, never any problems. You shouldn't have to call to cancel an account, doesn't really make much sense, not for such a big business anyway.

The real scam with FFXI is that you PAY them to spend 75% of your time warming the floor with your a** while either looking for a group, or looking for a tank and healer.

Just my 2 cents.

i find that hard to belive... as far as i know they charge you nothing at the start 30 days later they charge per day w/e was left in the rest of the month and the next month on the 1st billing cycle after your 30 days, so i dunno why you'd get charged full price. I think you have math problems.

Actually yes when you sign up, they automatically charge you for a full month, every game does and it will also tell you when you cancel that your subscription ends when your month ends. I dunno why you're trippin and SOE always bills me on the same day of the month....about a week after I reactivate my account I get a bill message that tells me I've been charged. I think whoever said your math is all messed up is right. I just reactivated my account and I didn't even get charged till about a week later. When I canceld about 5 months ago I got a message that said, your subscription will end blah blah blah and I was able to play until that day. There are very few games out there that pro-rate anymore. Monthly fees mean just that, you pay for a month, whether you choose to play that is not their problem. That's like sayin...you should only bill me if I've had 30 days worth of play time. That's just ridiculous...want some cheese with that whine?

The OP was talking about FFXI which is a Square Enix game not a Sony Online Entertainment game. So if you are comparing your re-upping a account with SOE versus their re-upping an account with SE then your comparing apples to oranges.

SE likes to bill everybody on the same day. For me they have pro-rated the month if you started in the middle of a month but I have only ever created new accounts and never restarted one, so their restart policy might be different then a new account.
