a few questions about this gameFollow

#1 Apr 24 2006 at 8:51 PM Rating: Decent
Hello, I am stil thinking about starting this MMO, but I have some questions first.

Are there bards in this game? If so, what do they do?
Are some classes purely better then others?
What is the most underused class and overused class?
What is the most underused race and overused race?
Are there any bots in this game?
What job do you recommend for a beginner?
What is the battle system like?

1-There are 2 kinds of bards - Troubadors and Dirges. Troubadors are seen as the 'happy' bards and Dirges as the 'dark' bards if i can say so. What it means is...i have a troubador, and they are really buff friendly, while, from what i understand, dirges have more debuffs.
2-While SOE will claim that all their classes are well balanced and are all able to do everything, there are some tendencies that have been seen. Everyone can solo, but if you are a templar, you have to take a day off to kill anything but undeads. Guardians are not the quickest of soloers around either, they take a lot of damage but don't hit for much. Sadly, by trying to balance their classes, not only have they taken away some flavor to some classes, but in some cases they just failed, period. Furies have more dps potential than Enchanters (who are a mage class) and in all honesty, mezzes are nowhere near a necessity, making the chanter class really not popular.
3-Hard to say from server to server, but I think its safe to say brigands and dirges are not the most popular classes around. Theres not millions of defilers on my server either.
4-Harder to say than in 3. Since all races can be any class, the race you pick is merely for esthetic reasons. I've seen wood elves assasins, dark elves paladin, halfling bruisers, etc. I have an halfling pally and i like him much.
5-This is a MMOG, so yes, there are bots.
6-Job ? i see you coming from FFXI. I'd say don't mind what is more popular or not...do what you really want to, period. It also depends on what playstyle you intend to play...if you intend to solo 90% of the time, then please don't pick a templar, you'll end up with enough frustrations to go out and kill at night...a way to figure it out is to see what was your favorite job in FFXI and then try to pick the 'equivalent' in EQ2.
7-Much quicker than FFXI. Skillchains are replaced by Heroic Opportunities, a kind of wheel that appears in your screen to show the progression. All in all i prefer Eq2's battle system because it is quicker.

Here are the answers to your questions.

1. Yes there are bards in this game, but ill leave that to dirges.

2. As far as i know....the only way a class can be better is by their ability to tank and do damage.

3.I would have to say that on Antonia Bayle server the most underused class is Illusionist and the overused class is Assassin.

4. Lets see on my server Halfling is the most underused race and Wood elf is the most overused.

5. Yes,unfortunatly there are bots..but ive seen alot of them get banned and then more just pop back up :P dont let that take you away from the game though.

6. We like to call them classes on this not jobs...anyways i would say that you should go with any class you want...shouldnt go with a class someone tells you to do and find out you hate it.

7. It is pretty much a click a button to auto-attack and use your abilities.

Go to http://www.trialoftheisle.com/download.vm to get a look at the game....but remember it is only a look at the game. I also hope to see you on Antonia Bayle server
Edited for spelling

Thankyou for your help, and I am sorry about the "job" thing. I tried to use "classes" but I kinda let it slip. >_<.

I am really getting interested in this game, it got good ratings, and isnt as mainstream as WoW.

I don't think the demo matches up to the actual game, in fact sometimes I see it as bad advertising. Guess I am just saying

"Try the demo to get a taste, the full games is much much much better!"

1 As it has said before there are 2 types of bard, dirge and troubadour. Their role is buff/damage/debuff/minor cc. troubadours sing happy upbeat songs, while dirges sing songs about death.

Dirges the melee orienated bard
Fear
Increase dps of party
increase melee attack skills of party
increase parry of party
buff poison disease resists of party
give party members a desease proc
They have 2 life taps, a ranges song and a blade attack
Debuff agi with decent damage when the debuff wears off
Debuff melee defense
Increase str and agi of party
Increase aggro gaining ability and str of one group member
rez
Debuff str/agi
debuff speed
increase in combat pot of group.
Stone skins can counteract damage

Troubs caster orienated bard
Charm, but cant order mob to attack
Increase attack speed of party members
Increase casting skills of party members
Increase defense of party members
Increase sta agi of party members
Increase elemental resists of party
Increase group pot in combat
Increase group hot in combat
A mental proc for group members, I think it is on spell abilities, but not sure
power taps
reduce all non fighters aggro in group
mez's
debuff agi/str

2 Yes there will always be classes better at some things then others, but not every thing. It all depends on what aspect you are looking at, but there is no super do all class.

So what your saying is, Dirges are evil? (kidding!)

Valphix, when you go to create a character you will also select a server. When you do, consider Najena. We have a bustling population, stable economy, guilds in all levels, and players in almost every zone.

When you get there, look me up. I can help you get started with guidance, directions, gear upgrades, and some coin.

See you there!

Well, right now I am installing the demo...well its installed, but it has to update...and it will take over 3 hours to do that...

So dirges de-buff the monsters? Like...lower their attack and stuff? While troubadoors(sp?) buff the party members.

Does this mean both bards are in demand?

by the way, can bards solo decently?

Yes, decently... maybe even well... but not as well as rangers and assassins (all 4 classes are part of the scout archtype).

However, bards tend to be better group members, (then rangers or assassins), since they are stronger in the area of buff/debuff but a little weaker in the area of damage output.

Yes, in small groups, full groups and raids.
#12 Apr 25 2006 at 7:28 PM Rating: Good
Yes both bards are handy in groups, there are also not as many bards as some other DD's which increases the demand for them some.

Bards can also solo quite well, they dont kill as fast as others scouts, but do have some higher survivabilty, or atleast dirges do.

I played through the demo and I liked it, so the main game must be REALLY great. I am gonna get this game as soon as possible!

Sorry for the double post..

But do I need to buy the game, AND the expansion pack to play?
#15 Apr 29 2006 at 3:12 PM Rating: Good
You can buy the basic game or the basic game with the 2nd expansion. Either way. You don't need the adventure packs or either expansion to play from lvl 1 to lvl 50, just the basic game will let you get to lvl 50. The first expansion is for lvl 50-60 and the 2nd expansion is for lvl 60-70.

Getting one or both expansions now will let you transition to the upper levels when you're ready but are not required to get started.

Do they have extra areas or quests?

Or is it just level cap increase?
#17 Apr 29 2006 at 9:17 PM Rating: Good
They are entire expansions, each with new zones, new features, new mobs, new treasure, new quests, new trade skill recipes and spells, new NPCs, new raids... there is a ton of new content in each one.

And since you are unlikely to just stop leveling when you hit 50, you will probably want to go there eventually! But for the time being, since the wussiest mob in the area nearest the DoF docks could one shot you without breaking a sweat, the point is moot!

Is there a specific race that is better as a troubador then all other races?

I think it would be fun to see a race that is not normally a Troubador, like Troll or Iskar.

Sorry, Najena was overpopulated when I created a character, so I chose ever...something as the server.

I sure could use a guide and help there though.

I guess you already took the plunge, but to clarify, the expansion's new content, zones and quests are for high level players (DoF 45+ and KoS 55+)

Neither expansion has anything that a low level player absolutely needs. The only thing I can think of offhand is that KoS has the Achievement system for character enhancement that you can start using at level 20.
