I'm really past due for an upgrade, sometimes when I'm playing, especially in Freeport, the lag is frustrating and almost unbearable. It has made me /camp on more then one occasion. I have my settings on default, and half the time it's pretty good. Would you guys even go as far as having 1.5 gigs of ram? Or would 1 gig satisfy my requirements? (Smooth running animation, not the "southpark" type of running)

I see people all the time claiming 1 gig is the minimum anybody should. However I have a custom built PC I use for friends (you know multiplayer lan games etc). Anyways It has a amd athlon 1700 with a nforce 2 motherboard. I have a geforce 3 ti 200 128 ram, 512 megs pc3200 memory, windows XP that cleanboots to windows. Everquest 2 runs fine for me on this pc. It slows down just a little bit in town, but not enough to make me camp etc.

Point being 512 is enough to play the game, but sure 1 gig is obviously better. I think alot of people have too much crap loading into the pc's memory when they boot up and that can cause problems. If you look in the lower righthand bar of your PC and see a ton of icons then your memory is full running crap. The only icons I have down there is the volume and thats it.

I experimented once and took thew 512 out of my other PC and added it to the 1 gig of ram in my main PC. I did not notice any difference in speed with eq2 between 1gig and 1.5 gig. Not saying its not there, but it didn't seem very noticeable.

I just upgraded from 1 gig to 1.5 gig this weekend and noticed a difference between zone times and general lag. I have a 3.0 P4 and a 256 nvidia video card (low end performance).

I can now play and fight with a lot less lag. Also, I have set the graphics setting up a notch or two without any problems.

Not sure how it will handle in zones like Blackburrow but I notice a big difference in Qeynos harbor which is always heavily populated. I still get a bit of lag around the bridge and harbor area (by the carpet).

I will hopefully get the other 1 gig chip in a month or so and upgrade to the max of 2 gig.

I recently moved up to 2GB from 768MB and I notice a huge difference. I have no lag at all in the home villages and even zones like SQ & QH give me no trouble at all.

I think Fronglo's half GB only works because it is a "gaming only" machine. Anyone who doesn't have a dedicated machine to run on is going to be stuck at only a half gig.

I would recommend buying either 1 or 2 1GB sticks if you can afford to do so. Newegg has some outstanding deals and 1GB sticks have never been cheaper. Good luck!

Something I have also found in my time working with PC's is name brand PC's generally don't perform as well as custom built PC's. HP and Emachines are probably the worst on the market right now.

My aunt recently bought a HP and it has 3 gigs worth of crap on it with a clean install of XP home. Most of it is junk like earthlink, shareware virus scanners, AOL, etc etc. Stat wise it should be about 600megahertz faster with the same amount of ram, although the classic Intel shared 8 meg video card. Anyways just running the internet and XP programs is slower then snot on her PC.

My dad has a Emachine and it was pretty much the same way.

Yea the only thing on it is Windows 2000, Firefox internet browser, and a few games.

I had no clue that would effect the zone times, this make's me want to go out and buy some ram right now. The zoning sometimes is unbearably long for me.

Ive got 1 gig and the game runs fine on the setting right below Balanced, for the most part... Flashy spells, and playing for a long time, have almost froze my game at times. I have a 256 Nvidia graphic card also. I was wondering, is it difficult to put in a memory stick? I was considering buying another 1 gig to upgrade it, so I could play the game on the balanced setting at all times.

Adding a stick of memory will usually take all of 10 or 15 seconds! Just be careful before hand to double check the memory you currently have.

First of all, you will want to buy the same kind of memory you already have. Not the same brand but the same spec. Might be pc2700 or pc3200 or something like that. In any case, you will want the new stick to be rated the same.

Also, you will want to take a look at your mother board to determine whether it came with 2 sticks of 512MB each or a single stick of 1GB. Having 2 sticks of 512 will only be a problem is your mobo has only 2 memory slots, (some mobo's have 2 slots and others have 3).

Newegg has great prices on ram and a good selection to choose from.

When you are ready to install the new stick, unplug the computer from the wall and open up the case. Touch the power supply to make sure you there is no static charge on your body then undo the 2 latches that will hold the stick in place. Slide the new stick gently but firmly into place and close the 2 latches.

Close the case, plug it back in and that's all there is to it!

Make sure you don't put the memory stick in upside down! There's a notch in the memory stick that'll be just slightly off from the centre.
