Game & SK questions.Follow

Hi, looking to start up some EQ2 action. Currently playing FFXI, got Samurai to 75 and find end game life a bit boring. Not here to ask which is better blah blah blah, cause i'll still continue to play FF.

I've read that you can only master one type of weapon. I'm looking to play SK and would like to know what weapons would be my options and why. Does any weapon cap higher than another? If so which would be SK's highest? I would like to use a shield, which type of weapons can be used with shields? Actually what are all the types of weapons?

I understand SK is a tank, but can it be built to be a DD? It seems you can build one however you wish. I'd perfer to balance Def & Dmg, is that worth trying?

Game things i'd rather learn on my own, but don't want to start making a SK one way to later find out I should be going another.

Thanks for any help.

As far as I know, you can use more than one weapon. It depends on the class ofcourse, don't think that a paladin can dual wield for instance. But slashing, crushing or piercing weapons can be used, without using one excluding another.

But, what can cause limitations are the new achievement points. Some effects of the AP's can only be used if you use a certain weapon. For instance, my monk now is following an AP tree which will require me to use a staff to be able to use the effects. For now I get an agility boost, which is always handy, but later on I will have to use a staff. (not sure if I'm going with this, luckily these points can be reset at a price)

No idea about the specific SK questions I'm afraid, never played one.

You can cap all the weapon types if you want. It is not uncommon to see people try to get it to go up for one of the 3 type of weapon (slash, crush and pierce) on very weak mobs at least to get it to catch up a bit. Only thing is, starting level 20, you get the ability spheres, and depending on which path you will choose you will be restricted on what type of weapon you can equip.

Even if SK's are tanks, it is no secret for anyone that they are the weakest of the tanking classes. I have seen some very good SK's tanking in a decent way, but they always seem to be overmatched by the other tanking classes. However, SK's can make decent damage, at least with a tank perspective. You would still be way under the DPS level of lets say, a brigand.

If what you want is some tanking ability and good dps, i would suggest you a bruiser i think. While they dont sustain damage like an heavy armored tank, they evade attacks so well that it counterbalance. Also, their DPS is good enough to keep you satisfied and entertained.

But hell, it also depends ALOT on ppl's skills. Ive seen an assassin tank better than half the regular tanks ive played with....

I would say Monks are the weakest of the tank classes, in fact people often don't even consider them as a tank, but they are in the same class as the other tanks.

IF you plan to be a SK it doesn't really matter what weapon you master as your main job will simply be to taunt and not die. Also if you use handcrafted weapons (and I would venture to say most players do) It doesn't really matter as 1h blunt, 1h pierce and 1h slash all do the exact same DPS. Currently my Paladin has his slashing up fairly high but at lvl 40 I got a legendary blunt weapon so I have been using it ever since. My pierceing is pretty much crap but blunt is maxed and slashing is about 50 points under maxed.

But yea there is nothing restricting you as far as maxing all your weapon skills, just with AP points you have to pick which one you want. I like the hammer one because it does a AE damage spell and it also stuns/knockbacks on the mobs.

People say paladins/shadowknights are the weakest though isn't a true statement. MY main is a paladin and I have tanked just as well as Berserkers and Guardians my level. Granted stat for stat hitpoint for hitpoint yes a Guardian and Berserker is probably abit better, but if you play your class keep your taunts adept 3 (which any tank should do really especially at higher levels) there is nothign wrong with paladins or shadowknights tanking. And once again they are not the WEAKEST, Bruisers/Monks are the weakest, really they are barely even a tank as they have poor taunts.

Hi, just wondering if there's a more populated EQ2 website? This site is awesome for FFXI, but is a bit lacking for EQ. Would like to find out more before I start playing.

Thanks.

Hmmm... Try the official boards.

You'll get 1 good answer, 5 misinformed opinions, 5 arguments against the answer, 10 arguments against the opinions, 30 flames against the arguments, 15 off topic posts and 1 lock by the mod.

Ok, can someone explain the difference in the spell paths a SK can take? Doubt i'm correct but from what i've read there seems to be a Str, Int, and/or Wis path? Is there a benefit for staying on the same path till the end?

I also read that there are fights while on horse back. It was mentioned that most tanks don't get to take advantage of this, but when they do SK's pierceing weapons have a double dmg to them. Or maybe Joust had double dmg? Would crushing and/or slashing have any added benefit while on horse back?

Thanks again for any help.

I'll leave the fighter AXP path for someone smarter on that.

Anyone can ride a horse and fight from it. The horse will only provide a speed buff, not damage or battle.

Some abilities require a particular weapon or a shield to be equipped. Additionally, some mobs may be immune to a particular type of damage. The smart fighter will carry several types of weapons for every occasion.

Sounds like you're talking about Achievement Points rather than spells/combat abilities?

The different trees/paths are Str, Sta, Agi, Wis and Int. You have a max of 50 points to earn and can either go all the way on 2 trees or spread your points out and not master any.

Reaching a certain number of points in each tree (usually 8) gives you a special Combat Ability that requires the use of one particular weapon type.

Sk's tend to think putting Achievements into spell damage enhancement is better than melee because they do more damage with their spells than anything else. I'm guessing that would be the Int line.

The best Achievements tend to be the ones at the end of their path.

Also, anything you can do to help you hold and generate hate is a very good thing, from what I understand, because SK'd don't have the tools for holding aggro that most other tanks do.

Hi again, thanks for the repsonses so far. So it sounds like you can master 2 tree paths? From what i've read Agi path gives Joust combat ability when using 2HP. Can anyone tell me what the Str, Sta, Wis, and Int paths provide? I saw Trample mentioned, is that within the Agi path? Or is there a site/forum here with this already maped out?

Sorry for all the questions. Ordered an Alienware Area-51 5500 yesterday, so i'll be on here asking away till it comes in and I can start playing.

Thanks again.
