Comming back to eq2 after a LONG breakFollow

#1 Feb 24 2006 at 3:44 AM Rating: Decent
Hey everyone,

Ive decided to take up playing EQ2 again after taking a break for some work (played from release for about 3 months, then quit) and ive got a few questions as I see a lot has changed.

1. Im considering being one of these four classes: wizard, warden, fury, ranger. How would you guys order these in terms of which would be the best to play? If you would please take into account how well they perform in pvp, how they will soon be affected or nerfed by upcoming patches or game expansions, and just overall performance of the class in game and with groups. Also coolness is a factor, if that’s a word… I do like to see some nice spell effects and the look of items equipped. However I would be willing to sacrifice the cool spell effects in the case of the ranger if I could get some really nice looking gear and a good bow. Basically, consider STYLE is what Im saying, heh.

Some other questions I have with classes:

Im going qeynos, I can be all those classes and start qeynos right?

Rangers get bows correct? Do they do reasonable damage now?

2. Is pvp out yet? I see it advertised a lot but im not sure if this is because its being released soon or its already out.

3. What type of server should I start my character on? I want to be able to pvp, so is a pvp server my only option? Or do all servers have pvp and the pvp servers simply mean that they have special rules and more in depth pvp. Also, what does this "exchange" business mean that’s in the description of some servers?

Thanks for the help everyone

PS. Im on the trial download right now, but when i upgrade to the full game, what box should i buy? The new expansion or just the game itself? Thanks again

PPS. any other helpfull information on anything thats changed or things i should consider would be great, thanks!

No one can tell you what clasds you would like to play, but with the new changes, you can play each of the classes to 10-15 and have a better understanding of what you like to play. But all those classes are or can be good and go to qeynos.

PvP should of just came out with kingdom of sky, so you should buy KoS which if you buy at a store comes with the original EQ2, which will get you going.

There are 3 PvP servers, if you want to PvP that is where you will need to go. Also one of the PvP server is an exchange server, which allows you to buy and sell in game items for real life cash.

Problem with the pvp question is the fact that just not many have played on a pvp server. They just began. It's too soon to see the effect of some classes in pvp, especially at a higher level.

Yeah, I heard they do good damage, better dps than the tanks. Haven't played one myself as yet, but with the ease of levelling, I might try one out soon.

Buy the new expansion, the game is free with it. (boxed version I believe, not sure about the online version but I believe not) And ofcourse, that's the only way to play pvp.

I play 3 of the 4 classes you mention, (never tried a finger wiggler!), so I can give you my opinion of those...

Ranger - Yes you get a bow, in fact you now receive one at lvl 1, along with "unlimited" arrows until you leave the island. (After which point you have to buy them, make them or summon them.)
IMO, rangers do insane damage with a bow. When I have room to kite a mob, I usually pull it backwards tossing arrows, (and archery CA's), at it until it drops dead leaving me at 100% health!

In addition, rangers also do real nice DPS in melee mode. When I do let the mob close the distance to melee range, I can usually carve it up in short order through the use of dual wield weapons, poison and HO's.

Warden - is my favorite healer so far. I love the whole concept of heal over time (druid specialty), and the fact that druids have the highest DPS among healers cuts down on the amount of time it takes to dispatch mobs when soloing. Tha ability to self heal (like all healers), gives us great survivability when soloing and allows me to try taking on mobs I might not risk with another class.

Fury - I have only played my fury to lvl 23 but I really like him too. Better DPS (nukes and DoTs) than the warden and he heals almost as well. In fact, a fury might be your best choice for a healer in PvP since they have all the benefits of healers with the highest DPS of any healer.

Yes, all the classes you mention can start in Qeynos.

Yes, PvP is active now and according to SOE, is such a big hit, they're adding another server already!

If you purchase the new expansion, you will also get the original game. You will not get the 1st expansion, (Desert of Flames), or either of the adventure packs, (Splitpaw or the vampire one).

And finally, WAY too much has changed since you left to detail in a single post! But if you poke around on these boards you will find lots and lots of threads that take on the changes.

I'll round it off with Wizards, one of my alts.

You will be at the top of the DPS food ladder, being able to do more damage in single nukes than anyone else. In fact, one of the level 50 spells does about 4K damage! In fact, my 15'ish Wizard was doing more damage than most of the spells on my 60 Conjurer.

You will also have an aray of roots, stuns, slows, and mez's to keep the enemy at arms length. A very good thing since you wear paper-thin armor. They don't always take hold though, so it's good to have an escape route planned.

Spell effects are nice, expecially if you turn up the graphics. There are probably 5-6 different "styles" of casting, and newer spells that replace older spells typically keep the same animation.
