2-Handed or Dual-Wield for a PaladinFollow

#1 Feb 21 2006 at 5:39 PM Rating: Decent
I have read lots of posts that say when tanking use a 1H weapon and a Shield, and when soloing use a 2H weapon so you do more damage.

This I can understand.

However, if we have spells that we cast on ourselves (and the group) that give an 8% chance per attack of doing more damage, why not dual-wield? I currently have two buffs that each have an 8% chance of casting a damaging spell on the target, so thats effectively a 16% chance per attack.

If I equip dual-wield weapons does this go up to 32%? If not, why not etc?

Theoretically: yes. In reality: no, it is not a 32% chance each round. It is only a 16% chance each round per weapon. The calculations are not cumulative. Each dual-wielded weapon works independently.

When you say the calculations are not cumulative, what do you mean? Do you mean to say that having two buffs each with an 8% chance does not lead to a 16% chance of one of them happening? I know chance/stats/percentages are not linear, so even if I had 13x8% buffs (leading to a theoretical 104%) there is still a chance that none of those 13 will occur. I think two lots of 8% would actually have around a 15% chance that either one will occur or something.

And if dual wield weapons work independantly surely that means each one has a chance of occuring. The text in the buffs (Blessed weapon) for example, says its an 8% chance on a successful attack. With dual-weild weapons you get two attacks per round do you not? Therefore you must be twice as likely to have an occurance.

I think the best thing for me to do is equip a 1H, a 2H and a DW set and see what happens.

Sorry. That *was* a little hazy. Each buff is separate from one another. For instance, say you are dual wielding and you have 2 8% buffs on (Buff A and Buff B). Each weapon has an 8% chance to proc Buff A and an 8% chance to Proc Buff B. So, in theory while dual wielding, you have a 16% chance each round to proc Buffs A and B. By not cumulative I meant that you cannot just add 16% + 16% = 32%, just as you surmised your 13 X 8% calculation was incorrect. Hope that cleared things up a bit.

I think Paladins can equip a duel wield weapon but you can't actualyl equip 2 duel wield weapons. So really its nto worth doing as a paladin since just 1 duel wield weapon generally has less dps then a 1h slash weapon.

As for me I never use a 2h weapon and I am 51 paladin now. With 1h weapons I have a better chance to use my spells that cast divine nukes. I have found a fight goes just as easy using 1h slash and a good shield.
