Levelling speedFollow

I played Everquest for two years, and found the levelling rate to be really quite slow. I played WoW for a while as well, its levelling system was quite nice, as the treadmill was fast-paced.

I am contemplating purchasing EQ2, however, I am curious as to how its levelling compares to that of the original everquest.

Thanks.

Leveling in EQ1 was driven by a few factors:
Play time - obviously, the more someone plays the more the do and the more exp they get.
Recovery - after a fight where you lost health and mana, you needed to recover it before jumping into the next fight. Buffs (or crack) were critical to speed that along and have the minimal down-time. Even so, you might need to wait 10+ minutes before another fight.

In EQ2 you will find it is much faster. Everyone has "Vitality" or exp-bonus. As you kill things, your vitality goes down. You vitality regenerates automatically at .5% per hour. So after about 8 days, you can go from 0 to 100. The bigger mobs you kill, the more vitality you loose.

However, you loose Vitality at such a slow rate, you might always have some left, hence get a exp bonus continuously.

Recovery of health and power (mana) is lightning quick. You can be back up to full health and power in just a few minutes, faster if you have good food and drink on, even faster (almost no loss during combat) if you have a Breeze-type buff on and healer.

All this means you will find the leveling speedy. but probably not as fast as WoW. The minimal down-time means you can kill stuff much faster, explore a lot more, and get more accomplished.

Once you get to level 50, be ready for a significant slow-down in exp. When I kill things, I get about .1% per kill, sometimes less.

Thanks for the detailed response.

WoW had a significant slow down at about 45-50, but the big thing was getting gear. 50-60 level instances (dungeons) could easily take three to four hours to get through assuming no unexpected massive group deaths. I can spend a good deal of time spread out over the week, but I never have the chance to actually sit for more than two hours straight.

Thanks again.

There are many instances, some with solo, group, and raid versions. Once you get high enough level and the mobs are not greyed out, you can solo run through one in less than 30 minutes. Other higher level ones may take longer and with a group, the raid ones being the longest.

I frequently hear a multitude of players in /ooc looking for instance groups, so it's easy to get a group together. Most folks run through "the circuit" once per night, keeping their fingers crossed for the good loot.

There are also many Epic mobs spread throughout the lands. These are the toughest to encounter and usually require a raid force of 2 to 4 groups. These have a chance of dropping good loot.

Above all, you'll find the best gear on raids.

When comparing to eq1 I would say getting from 1 to 20 takes longer then eq1 (mainly cause you can easily twink yourself in eq1). However 21 to 40 I feel is faster in eq2. From 40 to 50 is kinda slow, and I can't say from 50 to 60. Another reason I don't like them increaseing the level cap so quickly. Every time they do the levels become more and more of "Hell levels".

A follow on question to this. Are there many quest in eq2 above 50 that level you much faster than just grinding. In WOW, from 50 to 60 went pretty fast because I was able to continually do quest. For example, a single mob might net me 400 to 500 exp, completing a quest would give 3000 to 4000 exp. Is EQ2 like this also? I played eq2 at intial launch and got up to about 25, but it seemed like a grind. Just wondering, because I am thinking of retrying also.

Though I am not to that tier yet, I can almost guarantee the answers that will be given: yes, yes, and hell yes. Each tier has a number of different quests to grab some nice experience. With the relase of DoF and the upcoming release of Kingdom of Sky, I doubt you will run out of quests to undertake. Plus, there are definitely HQ's you can do to get even more xp.

Once you get to level 50, expect a significant slow-down in exp, even from quests. I am used to getting .1-.4% per kill, never more. That makes for some slow leveling.

There are a ton of quests, especially those having to do with faction. Maj Dul (main city zone with agro guards and 3 waring factions) has a huge number of quests also. And then you gain faction with one of the courts, and they have more quests for you to do.

Lots to do, but don't expect fast leveling. I'd rather have it like that than the opposite (nothing to do, fast leveling).
