I have been finding training tomes like "An Initiate diviner's standard training tome" or "An accomplished marshall's Greater training tome".

When you examine the item you get a quest like "Kill 10 animal mobs in 5 minutes" or "Kill 10 bixies in 5 minutes". But completing the quest sucessfully does not seem to yield any reward.

Does anyone know what the point of these training tomes are? I have seen players offering good money for some of the advanced tomes, but I can't find anyone who will explain what they are for.

I'm going to be very unhelpful and say I have yet to be able to accomplish a "Kill X mobs in X minutes" quest. I tried these a few times and gave up. Templar DPS is just too low to solo them.

Back in my TS days I tried a few of these but they gave very little reward and someone told me (or I read) they were just another way to get us to kill a bunch of mobs. Anyway I gave up on them at that point.

Maybe they eventually lead to something and that's why people are selling them or maybe they're just trying it on. Sorry I don't really know.

PEople will list a tin cluster for 1pp if they think there is a .001% chance somebody might buy it. I think they just give you a small amount of exp and thats about it.

I look at these as a challenge. You get them sometimes when you examine a stone inside a rainbow. I believe you have a choice of 4 or 5 tomes that go along with the classes. The last one I got was in The Enchanted Lands and I had to kill 10 animals within a certain time limit. The experience was not great nor the reward but it was a challenge.

It is good to have these in the game, if nothing more than to just be another facet, another path to take. If all the facets of the game were removed, it would become a thin, streamlined, linear grind to the level cap.

Now, people have an option to do something different. It's not always about the grind...

I was hoping for something more like, "Says the spider to the fly..." :)

I'll admit, I've been in groups that have been an exp grinding machine for several hours, getting +30% or so. When you get above level 50, that's a significant amount since I'm now used to getting .1% per kill. That's point-one-percent. :(

But I do get the greatest satisfaction from helping others. In fact, when I go out on my loot runs, I puruse the LFG list for those in the 50-53 range. The area I go to is way too hard for them, but with my escort they are usually safe. I pull them along mainly to get them some exp, loot, or just so they can see a part of the zone they can't yet get to. Frankly, I enjoy the company.

The other night a 30'ish guildmate was logged on and needed a healer. So I switched to my 32 Warden and spent my night in Thundering Steppes helping him finish quests.

Now, I consider myself a casual-to-medium player, getting in 1 maybe 2 hours a night. Although one time I stayed logged on while waiting for a 4-hour named (T'sanne in Nek Forest) to respawn - sat on the floor and played with my baby during the wait. Another time I spent the night tanking T'sanne for a lower level group so they could get an HQ update.

A few members in my guild, and I surmise many throughout the game, sprinted to level 50 as soon as the game came out. They subsequently got bored and left. That's unfortunate since there has been so much great content and changes made since then. I'm glad to see many folks come here with, "Thinking of coming back..." threads.

By the way, I saw a level 50 Froglock about 5 weeks after they were unlocked. That's just crazy talk!

This brings up an interesting point...

How casual IS casual? How hardcore IS hardcore?

That should be a new thread.

I play exactly the same way you do. I like to enjoy the game as much as possible. I enjoy the game by taking my time with everything. I do not like grinding. Sometimes I just want to get a whole bunch of quests in a zone and work on those. Sometimes all I want to do is harvest. Other times, I am content just logging in and helping out my guildmates.

And these are the reasons I love this game. When I log in, I have a million and a half experiences to choose from. Do I craft tonight? Quest? Act as a good samaritan? The possibilities are limitless.

To answer your question: I don't know, nor can I even begin to describe my feelings on the matter in regards to others. Obviously, there is no set answer. I can easily say, casual is 5 hours a week and hardcore is the exchange server. I firmly believe, however, that it is all in your mind. You know if you are a hardcore gamer or a casual gamer. The only person that can accurately answer the question is the one it is posed to.
