I can not comment on assassin, but bards to me are fun. We will never compete with the other damage melees in damage. We are behind before you consider poison. Bards are a buffing class, this means we tend to have better survivabilty and more utility.
I also have not problem soloing with my dirge.

Bards have medium DPS and may buffs. So many in fact, you'll need to choose which to have up at tht right time. Parties will love you.
Assassins are "one-hit wonders" with their amazing single high-DPS hits. Masters of stealth, you will be able to sneak in and out of almost anywhere.
