Has it gotten better?Follow

Hi all,

I played eq2 from release date up until i had a few characters in the mid 20's. Then i got bored. I felt like there was no open path for you to choose. Do x quest for these pants, do y quest for these gloves, "uh-oh, pants are no longer good to me now i've out-leveled them". Do z quest for new pants. I felt like as big as the world was there was a very narrow line you had to walk in a cerain order to level, and gain equipment. I belonged to two different guilds and was doing writs like they were going out of style, but everytime id get one or two done, three people would leave and take their writ status with them dumping our guild lvl back down. I rather enjoyed the crafting system very much but everything else seemed too pre-decided for me. Coming from eq for 5 years and having all those options it seemed like eq2 was the parent you stayed with every other weekend that wouldnt let you do much, whereas eq was the partent who let you stay out all night if you wanted. Anyway, if anyone understands my concerns from this post please let me know if there have been any improvements made. Once again i only played the first three or four months, but im looking to come back.

Well, I don't have experience with the time you were playing, but I do feel that I can clear a few things up for you.

In no particular order:

1.) As near as I can tell, players leaving a guild no longer affects guild status. I've had several players who had contributed status suddenly leave my guild, and the Guild XP bar didn't change. So, that feeling of wasted effort is gone.

2.) The crafting system has been changed a bit. No longer are the tradeskill classes interdependent - there are now cross-class skills that allow you to do the things you previously couldn't. In other words, you can make everything you need in order to do your recipes. However, the cross-class skills tend to be a bit less efficient than having the "right" class make it - you'll generally spend more fuel, and have a lower success-per-pulse rate than you would if you were making it with a class-based skill.

3.) Combat has been completely overhauled since you left. If you only made it into your mid-20's, I'd suggest starting over. If you really want to pick up your old characters where you left off, expect to have to relearn how to fight.

4.) There are tons of quests all over the place, and none of them are really required for anything. Craft your gear, loot your gear, quest your gear. All are viable paths. I personally can't stand the Freeport Assassin armor quests, and stopped after two pieces.

5.) Questing isn't even vital. I see people day in and day out in the mid-30's who haven't done more than a handful of quests - only those required to advance, in fact. They simply grind. That's not to say that quests aren't useful - I loved some of the quests I've done.

I hope this clears up some of your anxiety. =^_^=

Gear: Yes, gear will eventually become /grey to you and you will need to get more. The good news is, there are many types to choose from, either by loot drops, questing, or player-made.

In effect, gear has become disposable. But with the abundance of gear available from many sources, it's easy to get new and better stuff.

Writs: The Patron concept has been removed, now anyone can do writs. The new math works like this: writ is divided by how many active accounts the guild has, no less than 6 and no more than 24. So if you have a guild of 10 accounts, each writ will be divided by 10. If you have a guild of 50 accounts, the writ will be divided by 24. If you have a guild of 4 accounts, the writ will be divided by 6.

Also, since you left there have been many changes to the combat system, con, toughness of mobs (they are harder), spell lines, and more.

There is still a ton of solo content and group mobs, satisfying whatever play style you like. A major adventure pack, Slitpaw Saga, is very good, and the new Expansion Pack, Desert of Flames, is even better.

Best to log back in and see if you like it. Keep in mind there have been many changes and it may take a while to find everything out.

Edited for spelling, grammar, and flair.

I had the exact same problem fmorningwind. I started at release, I left mid 20's for the same reasons as you did. I only just returned to the game since October and I can assure you the game rocks a lot more now. There's too many ways they have changed the game to put down in one post but I'll go over what stood out to me the most.

Lvling and quests have gotten easier. Before I remember there was no way you could do much without a standard group of se classes. Its not like that anymore. I've in fact duoed from 22 to 51 basically, even doing ^^^ yellow mobs for xp. Quests give out better rewards that are actually worthwhile and the xp is worth it.

The griffons are finally fixed ( dont know it that was all servers but on Blackburrow you would crash out while riding the griffons).

Money is easier to come by than it was in the beginning, making it a touch easier to get those upgrades you needed to play. The prices of things have stabalized as well.

The classes have been revamped, making it easier to grab different classes to group. Each class brings something different and worthwhile to the group or raid.

The vitality, or rest XP has been revamped, making it easier to level. It lasts longer and grows more per hour than before.

There is still so much more but all in all the game has finally grown into what it should have been at release. It took my SO to beg for me to return but after a week back it felt good to be back in Norrath

I really don't know why people fixate on the level 20 AQ armor. Player crafted is at least as good and you buy and use it as soon as you hit level 20. On top of that, the AQ armor can't be imbued (procs heals and damage in combat).

If you can afford the rare steel armor, it's WAY better than quested. The rare drops are a lot less rare in tier 3 now, and much cheaper.

Did the AQ for my first toon and really had or got better gear soon after finishing the quests, but the AQ are still pretty good exp for that level so if you can find a group by all means do them. That will be the real problem tho finding a group to get it done :(

I gave all my alts cash to buy gear so I could move up faster. and just bypassed all the AQ. With better gear you can exp in harder areas right off and move up faster.

The only real downside I have found since I got back into the game is too many mobs are now flagged as ^^^heroic instead of ^^ heroic. It makes grouping more difficult because you can't hardly go with the small groups of any class anymore. It also sucks for people doing heritage quests with these mobs. Before most classes could solo a green ^^ with little trouble and by the time it was grey it was cake. Now you have to be 10 to 15 levels above of heritage quest mob thanks to the ^^^ stuff. Like for instance when I did Bloodtalon on my first charactor I rmember we only had 3 people of random classes (no healer but we had a tank). I don't know if that same group could take BLoodtalon as a ^^^ mob. And if you get a add just kiss your casters goodbye, 2 or 3 good hits they are dead.

Almost every dungeon mob is flagged like this, and plenty of outdoor mobs are like this now as well (Griffons for instance. and some of the gnolls in thundersteepes) So I guess players won't be soloing the DWB quest now until there about 35ish, maybe even higher? ^^^ mobs are ruff even as greys sometimes.

Some good things I have found is alot of zones that used to require access don't anymore. At lvl 15 I was able to travel to Fallen Gate, Zek, Enchanted Lands, Lavastorm, etc without the annoying access quests they used for force on players. That is a big + IMO. I think there is still a few zones that require access, but no where near as many as there used to be.

Another nice thing is you can buff certain buffs out of group (IE SOW). Also supposedly Heritage quest mobs are supposed to be slightly less tedious, although I have yet to see the changes there (still have to mine outrageous amounts of crap for DWB, and spawn times on rares don't seem much different.)
