The quick answer is yes - unless you're doing it the Sony-Approved way, by doing it on an Exchange server, and going through the Station Exchange.

All sorts of virtual item sales for real cash within EQ2 is against the Terms of Service. The only exception is transactions made through the Exchange service, which can only be done on two servers: The Bazaar, and Shadowhaven.

In case you're wondering, the going rate seems to have dropped in the last few weeks, going from $10-$12 per plat on the Shadowhaven server, down to around $8 per plat. It's a buyer's market.

Ah ok, thanks for the quick response, if one WERE to buy from someone besides SOE would one get a warning or banned?

If Sony catches you doing it, it's an immediate and permanent ban on all accounts involved. It's one of the few rules that they're completely hardass about.

And just to clear something up, it's not actually SoE that does the selling, they merely facilitate the sale.

That IFthey catch you. I don't think sony really even cares about that anymore. I have not heard of anyone being get nailed with it for a long time. And I know the the farm bots and the loot farmers are still out there on our server, so they have to be selling to someone on the same server.

The game has already started its slow sink into price cost hell.
I was on trader last night and saw things on there that should only be a few gold yet they are priced in the 1p range.

So think about this, the more money you drag into the game the more its going to cost you to buy stuff.

Look at EQ1 I played it for almost 6 years. I got on there a few weeks ago just to look around and prices are crazy there. Items that where in the 150 to 300 plat range are going for 6 or 7K plat there are some things that are priced at over 100K plat. Thats just crazy. Anyhow you have to be crazy to buy VR money with real money anyhows.

I think they are more strict with eq2 virtual item selling then they are with eq1 for the simple reason they want people to use that exchange server.

In EQ1, plat buying is not the only reason for the price to be high. Some people just price items high in hope that some people accidentally buy it or some super rich guild want the spell/item badly enough to buy it. You'll notice that those high priced items and spells remains on the trader like forever if you care to monitor the market. Rare items usually are priced very high due to demand. When the very rare item/spells is up for sell for once in every 3 months, if you happens to have enough plat, believe me you will buy it. KEI might cost 90k, but you can make back all the money plus more in relatively short time in PoK. 50pp per person for a 2-3 hours buff is major plat making. Further more at level 70, you can easily make 10k++ in a normal play session. I have spend close to 200k plats on level 65 spells, earning every plat in game. At level 1, of course 90k is a lot of plat but once you get to level 70, getting that 90k in game is not that tough.
