Hi all, I was thinking about getting EQII and giving it a try. Currently I play FFXI and WoW (see sig) and I'm wondering how EQII compare's with those two (sorry if I'm beating the dead horse here on this topic folks.) I've never visited this section of alla before, basically I'm wondering:

How is the community in EQII? Harsh and immature? (like wow imo) Or close and helpful? (ffxi)

How is it to get game money in EQII? Is it very slow and difficult to make ends meet?

How many people play EQII?

Is there any PVP? How does it work?

What is the max level you can get? How long would it take to get there if you played just a couple hours a day on average?

Are you forced to group or can you solo all the way?

Any other tips would be appreciated!

Edit: Oh ya, how does the crafting work in this game? A friend told me that he loved how it worked in this game?

The community is very friendly and helpful. You'll find that EQ2 has a bit more mature crowd than the other 2 games. And since there is no Kill Stealing (of sorts) or open PvP, you don't have to worry about people ganking you. If you ask for help in a polite and courteous way, you will usually get some.

Money is slow at first, but quests make up for that. Just by doing quests, you can get armor, weapons, jewelry, food/drink, coin, and even some furniture for your room. Eventually you will be making good enough money to support what you need to buy.

How many people play EQII?

Hmmm, tough one. I think the last count was somewhere around 300,000. Individual server population can vary also. Some are full, others are barren.

Yes, in a consentual way through dueling. Both parties agree to duel, and you can even use a trade window to wager something. The winner gets the spoils. You can also just duel for fun with no wager. In the Desert of Flames expansion, there is a Arena where you can even assume the role of a monster and do battle.

With the Desert of Flames expansion pack, the max level is 60. On your casual schedule, you could reach that in about 6 months. But it also depends on how many quests you decide to do. If you just grind it out and do no quests, then you could reach it in a few months. If you take the more fun road of quests and lore, you can stretch it out to 6+ months. My casual playing took me about 10 months to get to 50. But I was not trying to reach the end fast. I've done hundreds of quests and helped my guild reach level 21.

There is an abundance of solo mobs. Sometimes I can't take 3 steps without tripping over some mob. There are also many group and heroic mobs for the more adventurous or groups. Yes, you can solo all the way if you want, but solo mobs drop a lower level of loot. Group/Heroic mobs drop better loot.

Try this free playable demo of the game to see firsthand how it works. But remember it is just the tip of the iceberg - the real adventure awaits!

Crafting is very involved and allows you to make many items that are better than any non-epic loot drop. Like adventure class, you can only be one type of artisan. The recipe system is partly based on different classes being supportive of others. So you may need an Alchemist to make a special oil, a Carpenter to make a special staff, then you take those and make your own item.

Crafting is like combat. While you are making an item, you may have a sudden "event" that will take away from the quality of the item. Sometimes they can damage, or in rare cases, kill you! You have "buffs" that you can use to counter those events, allowing you to make pristine (best) items.

For more tips, scroll down a bit to find other posts from others. I even posted the top 10 things I wish I had known.

Good luck and hope to see you on Najena!

How is the downtime in this game, (medding after battles) does your HP & mana regenerate by itself? Do you have to /sit or /heal? Does it take a long time?
#5 Oct 16 2005 at 6:47 PM Rating: Good
Your natural hp/power recover slow, but food and drinks make your recovery quite fast. Overall if you buy decent food and drink you have little down time if any. Also most of the crafted foods add to stats as well as increasing HP regeneration out of battle.

o.k. so its like FFXI where food and drink speeds up the process?
#7 Oct 16 2005 at 7:41 PM Rating: Good
Yes, it speeds up the process. For me with decent food and drink I am usually ready for the next fight in a couple of seconds, or by the time I position myself.

Now the recipe system was initially designed this way but classes are no longer dependent on each other. There are sub classes that everyone is that have their own books in order to allow you to make all the subcomponents you need.

For instance I am a weaponsmith but I can make my own ash staves to use on my weapons and I make my own WORTs as well. Granted Im not as good at making these as the woodworkers and alchemists but I am only using them as subcomponents so I dont need them to be pristine quality anyways.

When it comes to crafting, is this a part where either you are a crafter or a fighter? or can you be the fighter weather its a sorcerer or monk or whatever and be a crafter at the same time?
#10 Oct 16 2005 at 8:43 PM Rating: Good
A fighter cant be a sorceror, you have to be a mage for that. But if you mean adventurer, then yes tradeskilling and adventuring are seperate aspects. You can be a lvl 50 in tradeskills and only be lvl 6 adventurer. About the only thing about adventuring that has an effect on tradskilling is if you gather your own components. Since the harvest nodes are out in the wild, what you can gather from is based on adventuring levels.

To clarify a few things:

Adventure class: you can only be one class. Meaning, you cannot be a 30 Fighter and a 10 Mage. You pick one class, then select specialty archtype paths as you advance. At level 10, you will be given a choice 3 archtypes. Then at level 20 you will select between 2 final atchtypes.

Regeneration: Compared to EQ1 and FFXI, it is lightning fast. Even with basic food/drink, you will be up to full health/power in just a few minutes or less. So less downtime means more time to hunt your favorite critters.

Tradeskill/Warrior: Yes, you can be both. They both have their own experience. For example, when you craft a tin bar, you get treadeskill exp. When you slay an orc, you get adventure exp.

Yes, Desert of Flames (aka Baked Alaska) has been out for a month and reviews are very good.

You should also check out the Splitpaw Saga (US$8) which features scalable instances, a ton of quests, and great story. I spent levels 47-50 in there. :)

A couple more questions guys, thanks for your quick and informative responses btw!

Do you zone in this game? How far do mobs chase you when you are aggrod? Do they chase you all the way to the zone? How do you know if a mob is soloable?

What are the most populated servers? Are all servers identical or are there different types? (rp, pvp etc)

Thanks again ^^
#17 Oct 18 2005 at 1:16 AM Rating: Decent
Well, there are 2 RP servers. Antonia Bayle and Lucan D'ere, or something like that. They both seem to have big populations. I play on Mistmoore, and we seem to have a healthy population right now. My advice is make 3 or 4 chars, each on a different server, see which one seems the most fun, and go from there.

When you reach the edge of a zone, there will be a gate or a door of some sort. You right click on the door and choose to enter.
Quote:

Depends on the mob. Some will give up the fight after 20 or 30 paces while others will chase you all the way to the zone edge.

But one of my favorite tricks is to pull a really nasty group mob right back to one of the guards and let him do the heavy lifting! I don't get any credit for the kill but I also don't get dead!!!
Quote:

Mobs are labeled group or individual. When you "con" or consider a mob, a pop-up will tell you if you can attempt it alone or if you should come back with a bunch of your friends!

The zones are seperated by doors, so if you are in antonica the whole zone is one zone. You will stay in ant, until you go into another zone like black borrow or thundering steepes.

It depends on the mob, and what you do. If you just run passed the mob it tends to not follow you far, if you attack them they follow you a lot further. There are also mobs like bears and undead that are more dedicated to following you.

If you use the advanced targeting in the option, you will be able to tell how many arrows a mob has, with no arrows being even to a player. Then you have the basic colour system to tell how difficult the mob is. Combine the two to tell if you can handle it or not. I find a a yellow down arrow is soloable for me, but a blue^^^ is unsoloable. It will take time to learn what your character can handle.

You can also put the cursor on the mobs name and it will tell you how many people should be able to handle the mob. I find this is miss=leading sometimes since I can solo stuff that should be to dangerous according to it, but it does help learn what you can do. Also before you engage a mob, can check this to see if it is grouped with others, it can be a surprise to have a ^^^ mob kill you because you didnt see it was grouped with a weak mob you were taking on.

I play mainly on permafrost, but play a bit on guk, and both seem to have plenty of people. There are Antonia and lucan are RP, and shadowhaven and the bizzare are both station exchange servers where people are allowed to buy stuff with real life money. There are no PvP servers yet, our classes just went through their first balancing for consentual dualing. It will be a while still for full PvP
