hey all. quick question, my scout is level 9 and it's time to start my quest when i get home from work, but i'm curious....do the bards in EQ2 play like the bards in EQ1? meaning, i think in EQ1 there seems to be a large level of skill required to successfully be able to have 3 or 4 things going at once, clicking buttons rapidly and timinng it correctly. just curious if it's the same in EQ2, because i had little to no luck doing that in EQ1 so i don't want to waste my time trying it here. any info would be helpful. thx

nope - bards in EQ2 are nothing like bards in EQ.

There is no need to thread multiple songs together since songs in EQ2 last hours not seconds and you never need to bother with carrying and changing out instruments in EQ2, (as bards must do in EQ), since they have no effect on anything at all.

In EQ2, bards are just a different kind of scout.

Bards are the low end of the DPS chain, but have several buffs and debuffs, and your primary role is to buff. Right now they still have not implemented instraments.

As far as casting your buffs, they all require a concentration slot, except the run speed buff, so you choose the 5 you want and they are on till you die or cancel them. Debuffs Last for about a minute and constantly drain power.

i dun play EQ2 but it seems the players caught the FFIX bug in "you do this and only this, i don't care if you can do this other thing good too" deal.

but as i can recall from my EQ1 days as a bard, it was simple.

enter party-get to party-start singing a song for party-puller pulls-tank starts to tank-you sing your 2-4 party songs-enter combat while singing said 2-4 songs(aka. push the A button and whatever hotkeys your songs are on in sucession...this can cause carpel tunnel, or at least sore fingers & bones)

bards of EQ1 could solo almost anything up to 50 easily, provided a large area to run around and monsters didn't resist snare or you didnt slip up your song combos.

low on the fabled "DPS" scale(i never use that term, nor will i ever...its a load of crap to me) bards like rogues tended to favor fast weapons and generally had high dex, so hitting wasn't a problem...also bards also favored procing weapons so that helped too. bards could also wear some plate and could take a hit, though lower hps than their ranger or warrior brothers offset that.

instruments.. once a bard got his epic(now referred to as epic 1.0 over there) he/she never "needed" to use an instrument again, as the blade emulated every type of instrument.(needed as in not having to carry around 4 different things, but some instruments were paramount to convenience, like the super percussion instruments for the run songs.)

about the songs, a single bard could perform any role in a party almost(i tanked a few times, can you believe that? though it took a lot of coordination which a lot of gamers lack nowadays). caster heavy? play that set of songs. fighter heavy, got yas covered. a balanced party is where bards had to pick & choose more carefully.

bards were 1st-2nd picks for crowd control(often competing with those they called "enchanters") because of their many ways to incapacitate an enemy. i.e. snaring or sleeping or offtanking or kiting it.

now i dunno how bard types play over on EQ2 but someone expecting it to be the same as the old version might be in for a surprise.

Well First off bards can solo more then most classes, they dont need a huge area to run around in to kill. I can go in a dungeon and chant kite a mob in an alcove thats how small an area you need, if it summons I slow and chant/melee/haste. If hes still a pain I charm his next closest buddy and have it beat on the mob plus me chant/melee/haste. If its a gating mob I just charm a friend of his and let it use most its mana on my pet while draining its mana. Rinse repeat. Charming healing mobs also works great to have a ch heal form a mob you charmed while soloing the Fungi King lol.

You can make macros to twist songs for you thus eliminating the need to wildly hammer on the keyboard all day lol. And as far as HP go Bards can hit upwards oof 15k or so.

But in EQ2 whole different ballgame mights well read up on it.

Bards in EQ2 are far from their eq counterparts. Not all bards can charm (troubs), and those that can cant control the mob any more then make it stand still, or dirges with a weak fear ability. They divided a lot of the abilities up between the two, and weakened them quite a bit, but at least we dont have to twist all the time, choose what we want on and leave it.

Hey guys I played for years in eq1 as a virtuoso and ive been playing since release as a Troubador in eq2 So I think I can make a good comparasion. In eq1 bards were harder to play no joke very challenging class but you got rewared well for it. Now playing a bard is easy like cake and your still a great class but not near as over powered like eq1. Its easy to solo in both versions kiting in eq1 and mez kiting in eq2 depending on the mob. As far as raids bards will always be needed and in eq2 they made us better then enchanters in alot of ways so for groups go bard =) oh not to mention we aint bad in pvp in eq2
