i put the dvd disc 1 in my drive and am greeted by...nothing, the game won't load, i go into windows explorer to try and make it load manually but it won't even show the disc as in the drive? i tried the cd-rom soundtrack and that registered in the cd-rom drive and the dvd-rom drive so i know it isn't a problem with the drives themselves, what can i do?

Here's a cut from the SOE tech help page:

Quote:
If you are having troubles installing the game from your CD or DVD then you might want to try a few things. First check to see if one of the disks is physically damaged in some way. If it is damaged then you will need to return it to the store from which you purchased the game to exchange your damaged copy for a new one. Unfortunately, SOE cannot replace game discs.

Secondly, your drive may be unable to read the discs. In this case, you will want to try lowering the buffer and optimization settings on the drive itself. Do this by right clicking on My Computer on your desktop. Left click on Properties, go to Performance, File System, and then finally CD-ROM / DVD-ROM. Put the cache size at small and set the optimization to "no read-ahead." (This only applies to Windows 98/ME systems).

Lastly, you may want to copy the contents of the entire disc to a temporary directory. Once the entire contents are in the temporary directory you will be able to run the installation from there by double clicking on setup.exe.

If you receive an _INST error while installing the game, a virus scanner running during the installation process may cause this problem. For Norton's Anti-Virus you will want to disable the "auto-protect" feature and then hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Task Manager. From this list select "Navapw32" and hit the End Task button. Close the Task manager, if it remains open. Any other virus scanners should simply be disabled from the system tray (the bar where your date and volume controls are located). You should now be able to install EverQuest II.

What you might also want to look at is your power supply and video card.

I've read that low wattage power supplies and weak video cards can't handle the increased system load of the game, and shut down.

Can you run other DVD's (movies) from your DVD drive?

What are the specs of your system?

sounds like you are not putting it in a dvd drive ;p That is exactly what will happen.

it better not be the specs as this is a new computer rofl

3.6 gig pentium 4 with HT

2 gigs of DDR RAM @ 667 mhz

256mb ATI RADEON x850 XT Platinum Edition video card

dvd-rom and cd-rom/RW drives, (yes its in the dvd rofl)

i will try the drive optimization now with a new copy, strangely, the discs had the same off-color parts as the first copy i recieved...i got it to load once and at the end of installation it told me to re-insert disc 1 but all of a sudden wouldn't read it :(

If you can see the disc in Windows Explorer, than your DVDROM drive isn't recognising it. Which can be the fault of the disc or the drive].

Well.... one way is to download and install the Trial version. Then upgrade it using the CD key from your retail box. Long download though but probably faster than waiting for Dell to send you a new drive.

PS If you watch a lot of DVDs or use a lot of them, probably a good idea to change your drive annually. If only I knew how to realign the heads.

----------

If you do manage to read the discs, copy everything to your hard drive for the 'next time'.
