EQ2 tech questionFollow

thank you the the answerer of my last post, i found most of the information i needed to get me somewhat acquainted with the game.

now, on to a tech question,

my current system is fully capable of running these games

3.6 gig pentium 4 w/ hyper thread
2 gigs of ddr at 667 mhz
160 gig hd @ 7200 rpm
256 mb ATI RADEON x850 XT Platinum Edition video card

my issue is my connection...i use a wireless b connection, and while playing star wars galaxies i would sometimes encounter 4-5 second intervals where the npc's and players would "freeze" but i could still move around, then when the time had expired or whatever, the server seemed to re-load and everything that had happened in that 5 seconds happened ultra-fast on my side of the connection...

needless to say i want to avoid this, so are wireless connections (it is a road runner high speed router) ok to play this game?

From my understanding of it, data throughput with wi-fi is not high enough to play MMORPGs. (wireless is what, 24 mbps and wired is 100 mbps?) I've heard it's fine for head to head but the lower data rate really hangs you up in massives.

See if you can hook up a wired connection to the wireless networ with your router. The Linksys all will, maybe yours will too.

Wi-Fi's maximum bandwidth is either 11mbs [802.11b] or 54mbs*

That's 11 million bits per second for 802.11b I doubt your internet connection is anywhere near that fast so this should not be your bottleneck. [1MB DSL = 1 million bits per second]

The problem sounds more like

a) your router and NIC lose connection temporarily [like when my big fat brother sits in front of the router]
b) your internet connection gets jammed up for a few seconds [symptoms you described match it, when suddenly the information that's been pent up flows to your system almost simultaneously]

For a) unless your have some obstruction [or distance], you should be at or near the maximum bandwidth. Do check to see if anyone's using the router though as that will use up bandwidth [even if your connection shows the maximum]

b) requires that you switch ISPs [you're using cable right?] or the method by which you are connecting to the internet. Or play at different times of the day when there's less network congestion.

*some router/NICs with more than one antenna can 'bond' an additional channel to 'double' the bandwidth, hence the 108mbs that some routers advertise.

Basically a higher bandwidth Wi-Fi solution does nothing for your MMORPG experience. I still shoot for 802.11g or Super-G solution simply because it involves newer and better hardware. As long as you can manage 10000 bits per second [EQ2 seems to transmit data to my PC at the maximum of 24000bps, more usually 4000-6000bps. I get the peak transfer rate usually when entering a zone or an area with a lot of players then it settles down] you are fine.

I do like Super-G though, less chance of inteference from your neighbours [you DID change the defauly password? Hide the SSID or Profile name/etc] or your neighbour's kid mooching off your line.
