I just bought EQ2 and I've got a lot of questions about mage my main two being:

1) I'm thinking about being evil my ideal race was kerra when I did the 7 day free trial but now I find out they don't have good intellect. Will it matter much if I go ahead and play them or should I find a more mage friendly race, and if I should which one is good for evil players?

2) I can't decide among becoming a Wizard, Warlock, or Necromancer. Can you guys give me basic info on these or a personal preference?

The help you provide is much appreciated!

1.) You'll be fine; don't worry about starting stats. They don't matter much past the first few levels.

2.) Wizards and warlocks are both major damage dealers, some of the best in the game. Wizard spells are based on fire/cold, and warlock spells on poison/disease. Necromancers are also damage dealers, but do less damage than wizards/warlocks. They have pets, which makes it easier to solo.

You might, if you really want to go in-depth, want to follow the link at the bottom of this post to read about the new combat changes that are coming in a month or so. All 3 of the classes you're considering have sizable changes coming their way. Their current spell lists are listed on this site, under "spells and skills." (Also, on this forum is a post entitled "NEW necromancer spell list" which lists all the post-combat-change necro spells.)

Out of the Wizard's fire/cold and the Warlock's disease/poison, which one is less resisted by monsters?

Different mobs at different zones have different resists, so there is no "best" class to pick based on that. You will typically find that if it's resistent to one type of damage, you just use a different type.

I've fought named mobs that are immune to most weapon types, and cast a Cure Aracne each tic, meaning it sheds my DoT's (Damage over Time) each tick. FOund only 1 spell that would damage it, so as I'm running with it chasing me, the pet is chasing it. It was Varsoon, by the way.

Necro's are very effective with their pet, and they get several "flavors" of pets that do attacks and damage a certain way. The pet keeps the agro so you don't get hit. At least that's the plan, until you pull agro and the mob comes after you.

Wizards/Warlocks have roots/stuns that keep the mob at a distance, but with the live update coming expect those to get resisted and not last as long.

I've played a pet class since launch and have a lot of fun and utulity with it. I like it better than just being a cannon of blasting damage.

Is the total damage between a necromancer and their pet slightly or significantly noticeable from a warlock/wizard's damage?

Depends...

A Wiz/War does DD damage quickly, so the fight may not last as long.

A Necro has DoT/Pet that although takes longer, will eventually do about the same amount of damage.

I've seen many Wiz/Wars pull agro in a fight due to over-nuking. The only way for them to not get agro is to hold back...that means they are not being used to their full potential...a waste.
Pet classes rarely pull agro off the tank, and can use their full abilities. Additionally, the pet can be used to "off-tank" a mob to keep it busy and off the tank or healer (if he pulled heal-agro). Many times I've turned my pet on the mob that was after the Wiz/War that was over-nuking.

But don't worry about which is best, there is no such thing. SOE plans on making more changes to other classes, so what is true now may not be the case 6 months from now.

Play what you like and have fun with it!
