EQ1 Wants Me BackFollow

Just got an email from SOE about the Hot Summer Days of EQ1. They are reactivating my dormant account and giving me 21 days free to play.

As I read this email today I began to reminisce of my 49 BST sitting for long periods in Rathe Mts after nailing a few Hill Giants that dropped 18p each.

I smiled as I pictured the large bar on the right side of my UI that had all the buffs I picked up in PoK before heading out...that were STILL on me.

I chuckled remembering how my 34 Mage would summon a pet, buff, create armor and weapons for the pet, then cheese some bigger buffs for the pet.

I tingled at the fear of hearing "TRAIN TO ZONE", and backpeddling to a safe spot and watching the procession.

I scoffed at the polygon terrain and flat-face characters.

I longed for Levitation that would gently carry me aloft.

ahhh...the good old days. I just may go back so I can sit in PoK and /ooc "Free BST buffs at bank".

I have a 45 Enchanter presently camped @ the Geonid trail in Crystal Caverns. He has been sitting there for months. Logged back in about 2 weeks ago and game did nothing for me... Logged out after 5 minutes or so.

I am so far behind in EQ1 that I can never catch up. At least EQ2 I kinda feel like I am ahead of the general population.

Hmmmm... which bank? Main, (brick), bank or the little bank?

I'll be at the pool fishing and skilling up my casting if you need anything... might even go for a swim!

Always at the main bank. I sit on the little hill next to it...better view and less lag. And just far enough away to avoid catching a chat line of every single spell being spammed by every other player for skill-ups.

I actually got stuck in that pine tree on that hill one time. Took several days to /rewind and get unstuck.

And while not buffing, I click on a macro to continuously cast certain spells to try to raise the skill up a point or two.

What were those caverns called with the Bandits? Ah, Paladul (sp?) Caverns.

My most prominent memory is of Velious. I was an aspiring weaponsmith and I wanted to get some Velium Blocks for the proc damage they added. If you have every zoned into Velious from the spires, this might seem famaliar to you. I zone in, look left, look right and have no idea how to get to the Dwarven city. So I run in the direction I believe it to be. Bad choice! To put it bluntly, the Tundra in Velious does not take too kindly to low level Beastmasters running aimlessly in its vast expanse. Needless to say, I died...quick.

Coming tomorrow, Part Two: The Corpse Run and Me, followed shortly by Part Three: Im Nekkid Again and Its Cold

Thanks for the memories EQ1!

I know that very spot! For a time my main "lived" in PoK, and for that period, I always used to gate back there after adventuring, sell off the swag, do my banking and then run up that hill before sitting down to log out.

But you really can't go back home again... I returned to EQ recently to try out the new version of the tutorial and play with some of my guildies there. Spent a couple days in old Norrath and couldn't get used to the differences between that version of the world and this one.

Even kept forgetting that I could use the spires or go to the moon if I wanted!

So last night I decide to take up SOE's offer and see what's happening within EQ1.

I launched the program and expected to have a serious patch download since I had not played since last November. I was pleased to find only 10 minutes worth of downloads. I smiled at the familiar intro music I had not heard since last year.

I selected my main, Tutan a 49 BST, and arrived in PoK. It took me a few minutes to remember the interface and how to do things, but I caught on.

I summoned a pet, buffed up, especially Levitation (my favorite) and decided to head to Rathe Mts to whomp on some Hill Giants.

As I was running I was amazed at how smooth the graphics were. I reminded myself that EQ1 is not a challenging program, graphically. I ran to the evil side of PoK and jumped into the Oggok portal. I then ran towards the Rathe Mt zone line uneventfully. I ran through the zone point and waited for the screen to pop up...and it did.

As soon as I zoned, I heard a grunt and a thud, and was suddenly looking at the dead bodies of me and my pet. There was about 8 NPC's right at the zone line, just standing around...waiting...mocking me. ?!?!

dang

Welp, that wasn't really the welcome I was expecting, but I suppose there's been changes to the layout and new mobs are camping certain places. Maybe that zone line to Rathe has been closed and people need to find a way around.

No big deal, I thought, I'll just run and get my shard...um...dang

Forgot that in EQ1 all your gear stays with your dead body. So here I am, naked in PoK. And if I try to zone again into Rathe to get my corpse, I'll probably die again, leaving a Stack o' Tutan at the zone line.

I blinked a few times in wonderment at how I so quickly got to this spot, mainly because it was late and I had to work in the morning, and decided that was it. I wasn't planning on going back to EQ1 anyway, it was more of a nostalgic trip. I guess this seals the deal. I may try to play my 34 Mage a bit, but I'm just not feeling it.

[grumble]

Edited for spelling and grammar.
