Why /ooc? Why?Follow

I play on Lucan DLere (RP Server) and a typical /ooc conversation is as follows:

  • Random Toon1: OMFG...you wouldn't believe what I did with my gf last night!
  • Random Toon2: STFU...you're gay
  • Random Toon3: WTF?! I have something gross on my manhood?

  • What the hell is that all about? RP server here. It drives me absolutely insane!!! Grant it, I laugh sometimes, but for the most part it annoys the living crap outta me. I know I can just as easily turn it off, but sometimes you can learn things from /ooc. I don't mind if someone asks "Where is Fangbreaker Keep? I have been looking for two hours and can't find it?" That, is a constructive /ooc. It helps others out who may have the same question, but are too afraid to ask.

And why use /ooc as your marketplace? That is why there is an independent /auction command. If that isn't enough, join a market channel or sell from your room.

IMO, I think out of character chat on an RP server is irrelevant. The whole point of RP is (are you ready for this) TO RP!!! EQ1 had it right with learning languages. I enjoyed learning them and would constantly look for language groups. As soon as ooc reared it's ugly head, language groups became obsolete.

If you don't want to RP, don't join an RP server. And if you must use the /ooc command, be respectful of the other players in the zone. No one cares what you did with whom or what might be growing on your member.

    /sigh of relief

I use the lvely function called /ignore. If I can't tolerate them in /ooc, I won't tolerate them in my group.

I've never put someone on ignore. Guess my heart is too big! Smiley: boozing If you /ignore that person, will it register anything they say, whether it be a tell or an /ooc? I always thought ignore worked much like it did on AOL. You could still see that person in a chat room, but they couldn't instant message you.

Nope. If I put someone on /ignore they might as well join Fredo in the rowboat cause they are dead to me!

Regarding your original point... I don't feel as militant, (or as vitriolic), about it as you... but I agree in spirit.

Once you ignore someone, they will be stricken from every pillar, from every tablet (remember that movie?). I believe it will also block invites from them. Nothing worse that a vengeful player spamming your screen with group invite pop-up windows while your trying to fight.

My ignore list is at least 20 names long. It only takes a few of those above comments in /ooc chat to tell me a lot about that person. And if they start a flame war in /ooc, that seals the deal.

I've never had a shortage of friendly people or groupmates, and my gaming experience has benefited from it.

I think the issue with the /ooc used to market is just because not everyone knows about the /auction command. I haven't changed my colors, so /ooc and /auction appear as green text. Maybe I should change that... :)

That is good to know. I have a feeling my list is going to grow exponentially Smiley: sly

Spirit is good enough for me. It doesn't really drive me to the point where I want to throw my computer out the window (I love EQ too much for that), but it does make me wonder A) the age of these people, B) why they choose to play on an RP server and C) the total lack of respect. I am not heavily into RP, but I do like to dabble. I'm guessing most, if not all, of the /ooc bandits are noobs.
