Few questions on RangerFollow

#1 Jul 06 2005 at 5:34 PM Rating: Decent
I am going to be starting a wood elf scout soon and pump him out to a full blown ranger. How expensive is it to maintain arrow usage in groups? Suggest leveling up woodworking as far as I can before I subclass ranger at 20? Anyone recommand a good server that has a good population count but a low ranger count? Thanks for any future info. Good adventures!

Actually, this isn't much of an issue... early on, you can make do with cheap arrows, tin at first and then iron. These cost a few copper each and unless you play for hours on end, you will probably not need more than a hundred or so per session.

As a ranger, at level 21 you will get the "makeshift arrows" spell and at that point, you will be able to "create" carbonite arrows out of thin air! The app 1 training version of the spell will generate 10 arrows every time it refreshes, (10 minutes or so), and the app 4 version, (which I have), will net you 30 arrows every time it cycles. Using the app 4 version I have more arrows than I can fire.

You will then recieve a replacement version of the spell every 10 levels or so and each new version will let you create arrows for your new tier.

When you get to a point where you need high end arrows for raid mobs, you can buy them or make them but those instances are the exception, not the rule.

So, become a woodworker if you want to but don't feel that you need to be one to be an effective ranger!

Ah excellent. Thanks for the information. It helped a lot. And are the pets a ranger gets worth using in combat or what exactly is there purpose?

The ranger pet cannot be used in combat at all. "Phyn's Hunting Hawk" is our level 20 fluff spell and is just for fun.

I have read posts from some folks who claimed to have used the pet as a delaying tactic and then escaped while the mob was beating on the pet but I have never tried it myself and have yet to see this actually work in combat.

BTW - you can't take him for a Griffon ride either! He must be dismissed before you can board the griff...

Well jeez that sucks. What about the other pets.... I believe at lvl 40 and lvl 50 you get new pets. Same exact as the hawk?

They're "bigger"... but just as ineffective... or so I'm told...

Damn that is a real stinker. Cool though cause you get pets still ^_^. So I believe you can duel people in EQ2 or go to arena, correct? Which is a better dueler... Ranger or Berserker? Berserker was what I first wanted to be, but I played Ranger in the other everquest games.

PvP will be implemented in the first expansion - released this coming September. Till then, nobody really knows who will be the dueling champion...

BTW - you will also be able to use special mobs to do your dueling for you... kind of like a pet...

Hi Archaviass, Just thought id give u my 2 copper on your status.

- I also made the change from FFXI to EQ2. I changed because I was a dragoon and got no groups. No groups = no lvls = no fun

- When i got to eq2, i became a wood elf ranger, just like u want to be, and boy is he fun.

- As for a good server, i play on Mistmoore and i love it. Lots of nice people there. Cept some of the hardcore gamers w/out a soul. :)

- As mentioned before ranger pets just look pretty, not much more, but as you run away from battles, mobs will occasionally aggro them and ur home free.

- I understand your thought on the cost of arrows, especially since rangers were the most expensive job in FFXI. I have personally never run out of arrows. I have to actually stop summoning arrows because i take up too much inventory space :) At 38 i still use mostly carbonite arrows, but I also have a rip ability that yeilds a higher lvl arrow, but only one at a time.

- As for the arena, I personally feel rangers will not fare that well. In the splitpaw arena i have a hell of a time staying alive. Ranger abilities are meant to be used from behind or in stealth. Hard to do with all the hate on u. Taking that into thought, rangers dont solo to well either :(.

- The trump card us rangers have, however, is the ability to kite. There is an excellent guide on this site somwhere, and it has given me the ability to solo heroic encounters of my lvl. Can u say 1-2% per group solo :D

- Finally, I feel that u should look at all the classes before choosing ranger. Rangers rule, dont get me wrong, but i have equal amounts of fun on my healer and tank alts. Which is odd, because i have always been DPS on all the other MMORPG's that I play.

Switching from FFXI to EQ2 is the best decision u coulda made.

Alright, thanks for all the information fellows. I still need to get a laptop before I can play because my brother is being a bish and not letting me use his computer. So I have plenty of time to think about it all. My options are wood elf ranger and Barbarian Berserker. Well thanks again everyone, take care.

I have to agree that rangers are fun and spit out some mean DPS. My 29 Ranger ran into some problems in dungeons because there wasn't alot of room. I would have to back off the mobs a ways in order to use my bow. In the process I would sometimes pick up aggro. What is nice about the ranger class is they do have some melee stealth attacks, so my DPS was decent even close up. In wide open spaces is where you will really shine. You get all kinds of bowshots - backshots, stealthed, sniping, double and triple shots. You can really pound down the mobs by just sitting back and peppering them. You also get to use poisons so that increases your DPS even more. Have fun and happy hunting.

I have just returned to playing EQ2 after a few months break... and found many changes to the Ranger class ( I am a lvl 33 Ranger on Butcherblock).. like not being able to Kite any more.

But I must agree that the Pet Hawk has saved my butt on many occasion when fleeing from Mobs, he takes the aggro and I take the high road.

Arrows are not an issue either, my Master I gives me 65 arrows and using the 12 slot Quiver I have never run out. I am also a lvl 44 Woodworker and have always made arrows for other players, but I have never noticed any difference in damage using my own from those gathered.
