can somebody explain to me exactly how this class plays? is it like a rogue? u know, like sneaking around, relying on stealth rather then upfront attacks.
or is it just as deadly at hack n slash?

No, not exactly like a rogue... assassins are the flip side of Rangers - out of the preditor class so they are a dps class... that said, I took a look at the spell list > 20, and many of them do require stealth.
You can see the list here
I find that my ranger is good for a whole lot more than just bow and arrow tricks so I'm sure you will find more than just stealth in your assassin as well.
