Resolution....Follow

#1 Jun 21 2005 at 9:58 PM Rating: Decent
I really need to raise my resolution from 1024x768... my interface clogs most of my screen. However I don't have any other options to choose from. Is this my video cards doing or is there something I can do about this?

A combination of Vid card and Monitor determine your max resolution. You might need a beefier card or a better monitor... or both!

Probably your monitor is listed as "Plug and Play monitor" and not actually the exact make and model you have; you'll need to manually set the monitor type. So here's how:

click START
Settings
Control panel
Switch to Classic View
Display
Settings <-- you can also get to this point by right clicking anywhere on your desktop then click PROPERTIES
.

click ADVANCED
click MONITOR
properties
driver
update

NO to the question about should the Update Wizard search for your driver
-
Install from List or Specific Location
click Don't Search, I will choose the driver to install
UNCLICK "show compatible hardware"
-----
scroll down the list to find your monitor company
click it and now find the closest match to your monitor
---
If you still can't find your monitor, choose for company "(standard monitor types)"
and then select the resolution you THINK your monitor supports.

I recommend you choose 1280x1024 first, try it, later come back and go up if you think you want to, rather than try to jump ahead too far. Eventually you'll pick a setting too high for your monitor, your screen will go black, and the system will have to revert to the last good setting it had. In theory, your monitor can be damaged if the setting is too high, although this takes several minutes -- >and< if you can see the picture, its NOT too high by this definition. Damage is when the sync is lost and the A/D converter circuit in the monitor continues to climb in frequency looking to lock the signal by PLL, so that timing matches the output frequency of your video card. If you can see the writing on the screen, the PLL has a lock and your monitor is safe; you just might be squinting fron small characters.
Sorry for the long post but I hate to see someone buy a monitor because they don't know how to set the monitor type.
