Guides to get started?Follow

I'm not talking about the Isle or the quest to become a member of one of the towns.

I'm talking about after that. I do see one guide on this site that lists a couple of the quests they recommend and that's definitely handy, but I'm looking for something different.

During the original EQ, you could go to a forum and they'd have a hunting guide (Monkly-business was great for this, the Shadow Knight site, too). Are there any forums similar to that? Are there any map sites similar to EQ Atlas?

My problem with EQ2 is that since I'm new and all of my friends went to WoW, I really don't know anyone there, so I'm pretty much forced to solo and I'm wanting to find a guide that'll point me in the direction of some decent soloing locations.

Or, maybe, a guild that would let me join to help me get on my feet? I'm not asking for equipment or powerleveling, just a group of (mature) people who will be willing to answer my questions regarding the game, or maybe point me in the direction of a place to go hunt.

I've already played the game once, but I quickly got bored of it because all of the mobs I found were grouped. Eventually, they started to get to be lower level and I couldn't find anywhere to go after that.

I've played WoW since December 2003. Help me find a new game to love.

In EQ2, your choices for hunting spots are more limited in some ways than they were in EQ. This may be because the game is younger or it may be because it was designed to be more linear and streamlined.

You didn't specify good or evil for your characters and I can't really help you with the dark side anyway, but here are my recomendations for Qeynos folk:

From lvl 5 tp lvl 7 - the Peat Bog and Forest Ruins are both great places to XP. The Caves are also good but the first 2 are better, (IMHO).

From lvl 7 to lvl 10 or 11 - Oakmyst forest is where you wanna be.

Once you hit 10 or 11, you'll wanna transition to Antonica. At first, you should stay near the city gates, (North or South), but as you level and build up confidence, you can move out further into the zone. Antonica is a huge place and will keep you busy till you near lvl 20 and are ready for TS. The nice thing about Antonica, (and TS) is the zone is set up so that the deeper in you go, the higher level the mobs are. So when stuff starts to gray oout to you, just move a little deeper in and find a new critter to hunt!

In Antonica, you could start out near the North Gate killing snakes, moat rats, hawks, gnoll pups and fire beetles. When that gets old, you can move a bit East down the road and take on wolves and bear or even trash a few scarecrows in the fields near the North Gate. From there, I would suggest the Archer's Wood area in Antonica. The Antonican stag are real good XP and at night the woods are over run with gnolls.

At level 20, you will want to start hunting in Thundering Steppes. This is another huge zone that should keep you busy till you reach level 30.

Beyond 30... well... there's plenty of time to worry about that when you start to get bored with TS!

The bottom line is that although there aren't many different places to go, there are a lot of options within each zone. And there is PLENTY of solo content. I have now leveled a ranger to 25 and a warden to 26 and for most of the XP I've been alone.

Anyway, welcome back and good hunting...

Great advise OldBlue as usual. I'd like to add something If I may.

Once you level to a new Tier (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50) you get a huge boost in all your stats and so do all the mobs. What I tend to do as I hit a new tier is hunt the highest mobs in the tier before, but group mobs rather that solo mobs at great exp. Let me give an example:

At 20 & 21 most people will tell you to go fight in Thundering Steppes, but I disagree. Up to 23 I go and fight the blue and green group mobs, solo in the tier before me, namely the large kodiaks and then the Scarecrows near the steppes tower.

Bonuses to this is the fact that group mobs tend to drop more chests and better loot and great exp! Green group mobs solo are 1.25-1.5% exp and blues are 2% or so per kill if you solo them. I know for personally you can do it with a ranger or a conjurer, and my roomate the Paladin can too.

At 31-33 I was killing the Clay Gardians (as a conjurer) near the Book of Life and Weavemaster spawn in Ruins of Varsoon's for 1.25-2% per kill and it was the same when I duo'd it with a friend (a 31 ranger)

Oh and back to the matter at hand, Valael, if you are on the Crushbone Server please feel free to add Fealux to your friends and ask all the newb questions you like.

About me:
I played EQ1 for about 4 years, and have a 57 Beastlord and 2 boxed a Nec and a Shaman.
I am the Co-leader of the guild Fuzz and we are level 15 (almost 16) and have about 15-20 member (25 on the books with the alts) and we are mostly made up of adults, a lot of married couples who play together. We formed at the NA release of FFXI and most of us transitioned to EQ2 on day 1. We picked up several great players in Norath and we love to hang out and have a good time.

But we are all smart-asses...lol

I hope this helps in some way.

Since you start out with no cash or equipment (except for the IoR stuff), I'd also recommend you complete as many quests as possible. Talk to just about every NPC you find and they will give you something to do. Your quest log has space for 50 quests, so fill it up!

This will get you some spending money, exp, items, armor, and maybe some furniture for your room. You will quickly find that you need to keep your gear updated.

You could even get to level 12+ simply by doing quests. This will also get you familiar with points of interest throughout the cities and zones.

For maps, go to this site. They don't have the good write-up like EQAtlas did, but all the points of interest have links and are cross-referenced. There may be additional comments from players.

If you want to delve into Tradeskilling, this site has all the recipies, cross-referenced, and linked.

In addition to Allakazam, this other site has good databases for quests, skill/spells, and guides.

Tip 1: regarding spells/skill upgrades, you start with the lowest ability, Apprentice I. You can buy Apprentice II upgrades at many merchants, but don't bother, those are not a significant upgrade. Instead, go to a Broker (many city zones have them) and you will find player-made items for sale. You will want to upgrade to at least Apprentice IV. You may find Adept I loot drops to use or sell.
Some brokers are found in the Wholesale Merchant Society, and there is one in North Qeynos, in a building, just northeast of the giant claymore.

Tip 2: To find a location in a city, type ALT+W to get a list of waypoints to select. Then just follow the glowing trail.

You can always try asking in /ooc if you need help or directions. Folks are generally helpful. :)

Good luck!

http://eq2.gamepressure.com/ That's a nice site for maps.

They've changed EQ2 to where there are many fewer group mobs in the large, outdoor zones. Group mobs are mostly found in the dungeons now, so it's pretty easy to find solo mobs so long as you stay outside.

Thanks a lot guys. I think my character was on Grobb or Guk, but I'm certainly not tied to him. I made a warrior, but I'm not so sure I want to stick with the warrior thing. I made him more out "What will be needed" rather than "What will be fun". Maybe I'll fool around on Crushbone.
