Bards?Follow

I am thinking about creating a dark elf bard. I would end up doing the betrayal to Q to be with guildies. I have only grouped with one Bard and I was having so many technical problems I really couldn't say how well he played.

I was wondering how the Bards play in EQII compared to EQ? Any suggestions on how to play and choices to make would be helpful. I really love the idea of being able to create any class within any race. Does the Bard still rely heavily on charisma? I suppose being a dark elf might make that difficult.

Nope, there is no charisma stat in EQ2. Bards rely on AGI and INT for power. I think AGI is more important than INT, but I wouldn't swear to that. That would actually make dark elves one of the better choices for bards statwise (though starting stats aren't that important).

I've played an EQ1 bard, but not an EQ2 bard. From what I can tell, though, EQ2 bards are not nearly as difficult to play -- no constant movement like the EQ1 bards. In EQ1, the speed of your fingers limited the number of songs you could keep going at once. In EQ2, your concentration slots limit your songs. Most useful bard songs take up concentration slots. I've also heard that charm is quite different in EQ2, but you'd have to ask an EQ2 bard for a better description there. Oh, and no uber speed song...unless you pick dirge, and take their sprint-speed song training option at lvl 30. (pretty sure that's how that works...)

I've grouped my swashie w/ a troubador friend, and I can say his songs were really nice...they boosted my STR/AGI/STA by a decent amount, and bardic power regen meant I could basically spam my CAs all I wanted.

I have a alt Bard to level 17, and it's no different than playing any other class. That is actually a big let down since the only real difference is what the spells do.

Buffs are cast and stay up, just like everyone else. Timers range from a few minutes to 12 hours.

I have attacks that, with higher levels, give added mitigation effects. ...hmm, now that sounds familiar...

The only real thing I like so far is the versatility of the spell line and the musical effects during certain spells. Many of the buffs can be cast while on the run. A handy trick when trying to get out of a sticky situation. :)

I would actually prefer the old EQ1 style of playing a Bard. At least it would be something different and add a unique play style.

I play a Troubador, currently at level 40. I concur that it feels like most any other buffing class, in that, you sing the song *ahem* cast the spell, and it stays up. As has already been said, the main difference between bards and other buffing classes, is what is being buffed. While stat buffs are nice and all... I have become increasingly disenfranchised because NOTHING matters more than level and defense skill.

That's worth repeating.

NOTHING matters more than level and defense skill.

I absolutely hate how eq2 scales content and works with percentages rather than absolutes. The power cost for sprinting is a percentage. Fall damage is a percentage of health. Mobs deal damage and mitigate damage, exponentially, as their level is higher or lower than yours.

Clearly, I have digressed, my appologies. While I'm off topic, I'll also add that the bottom cap on xp level range should be increased and not trivialized so quickly. But, what does it all matter when you hit 50, raided all there is to raid, and can't advance your toon any further. /rant off

Edit1: some grammar corrections

I enjoy my dirge, I solo well, have a couple of life tap like abilites. Do decent damage, if only our proc was more then a 5% chance to go off. I enjoy having to make a choice on what group buffs/debuffs I have to use. It makes me think on what the group, or I need and be ready a head of time, and it is nice not to have to recast them all the time. For buffs that dont require concentration the shortest duration I have is 10 minuts on death scent that is an agi DR buff. My biggest complaint would be the cost of concentrate on debuffs. It costs concentration, but for some reason my anchor is always the second mob to die, ending the debuff.

For speed yes you have to be a dirge, and take the upgrade for your sta/str/agi buff at 30. It gives a 24% movement increase which stacks with with the 16% buff from pathfinding witch makes your group run like they are on a horse.
