The name game...Follow

How do you name your toons?

I know some folks who have a strict naming convention and base all of their toon's names around a specific theme. And others who just take the first thing that pops out of the random name generator in the character creation screen.

Me, I name all of mine based on names and "namey sounding" words found in the lyrics of some of my favorite songs.

How about you, what's your methodology?

Mine are all based on names of piercings.

All my character names date back to 1979-1984 Dungeon & Dragons era...

Elodarian is a plagerized name from Piers Anthony...
I'm just about as bad as those running around calling their rangers Legolas...

/sigh
/em hangs head in shame...

Sorry folks, I lack imagination in that department...

I have 2 methods. First, I try and pick at least semi-original fantasy names. Then, for alts, I often anagram the names of other characters that I like to make names for my mules or vendors or crafters.

I despise names that don't fit the genre, it really takes away from the game for me, to run into "Anthraxx" or "Serverlag".

Good thread.

I usually try to pick names that fit with the Norathian culture of the race I'm playing. If you run aroud town, there are some great names of npc's, so you can get a feel for what they are like.

I agree with gossamer. Names like Eldee MacLagmeister or Hitum Andsmashum really throw me. Or any derrivation of a fantasy literary character like Drizzzzttt Dourdennnn for that matter.

Naming can be really hard to do. It ususally defines the intitial reaction other players will have for you when you meet them.

Really good point there. We are all playing "blind" in that you don't really know anything about the person behind the toon and so your first impression of that toon is all you have to go on. The name tag may well be the only detail you have when deciding whether or not you want to group with that person.

And although to me, names like "Moonglow" and "Swiftwing" show only a minimal level of creativity, they are infinately more clever than <insert lame 14 year old's pun here>

I also agree that plagerizing the name of whichever film/book character is currently popular shows a general lack of creative thought process.

I mean really, now... do you want someone who named their toon "Leggoolliiss" to be the person responsible for determining raid strategy when you go up against a major boss mob?

Back in EQ, I played a ranger named Moriarty. The name often drew interest and comment from strangers. Personally, I liked the dicotomy of a lawful good character burdened with a name that embodied the classic concept of evil. My guildies nicknamed him "Morty", go figure!

I also try to pull from the local environement or culture, although with some races, they dont seem to have a real grasp of any cultural convention at all. Take the Trolls. Spinkit was the bankers name, but they also had a few with names that maxed the character threshold. I just settled for whay the name would be after translation and RP'd a troll speaking native language.
Swamp Talk
Always had great fun with that.

I'm not very creative. Almost all my characters get their names from the generator. With the exception of my dark elf cleric in EQ1. I thought I'd get cutsie with her, so her name is Reighn Beau. Heh.

If it's the series I'm thinking about, it was Stephen R. Donaldson.

You're right, Piers Anthony wrote the Xanth series.

Now THAT was a while ago. :)

I play Iksar pretty exclusively. Iksar are known to have "serpentine" names with an emphasis on S, Z, K, and other hard sounds. I've also incorporated some more "Eastern" sounding combinations. The names of Iksar I played my first time at EQ2 were

Kaitar Besh
Setissdraken Besh
Izavahss Rakshasas
Sijjvra Visz

This time I have

Rasza Baszhin
and Zyei Ahseijz

admittedly Rasza's name was just a more phonic spelling of my Troll Hunter Razabajin in WoW, but it fit, and I like the name so why not :) Zyei was just something I typed out to name him. Kaitar is an actual hindi name, Besh is Middle Eastern, Rakshasas is from a Hindi myth, Sijjvra, Izavahss were just names I typed out. Setissdraken is a play off the name Setiss, an RP character I had who was named for Seth (also known as Set) the Egyptial god of Evil.

My names are either pretty-sounding fantasy names (I have an alt named Estarria, loosely based on the name Estarriol from "A Wizard of Earthsea") or names from books that aren't super popular. Attolia is named after the title character from "The Queen of Attolia", but I have yet to run into someone else who has read that book. Morganna is pretty obvious, but oh well...I've always though Morgana Le Fay was cool. :)

The exception to the rule is Lierta, which I made up out of nowhere. /shrug

OldBlue, I think Moriarty is a cool name. I've always liked that character too (in my experience, lawful villains are generally interesting). That's an interesting idea to name a good character that.

Isn't Piers Anthony still writing Xanth stuff? Or am I wrong? I haven't read that series in a long time.

Hi all...

Ahhhh, the name game. I actually entertained the idea of offering a service of generating names for ppl because I come up with so many!

I generally have a name pop into my head and immediately have a surname come to mind for that toon. My names are usually plays on words that will define that character's attitude or role. (Then of course I feel compelled to create that toon for the name which is why I have all my slots filled!)

For instance, Sashayenne >> sashaying (a prissy toon, mage)... Nebularre >> nebular... and my main, Keilova Strickyn >> keel over stricken (a fury). The names I generate are nothing blatantly obvious as to their meaning, they generally appear as regular sort of names I'm told- but they give me a chuckle. **Keilova's last name was gonna be 'Endye' but I later decided I liked Strickyn better**

The list goes on and on.
I have way too many names and not enuff slots nor time to play the toons for the names I create! LOL

Bodhi, is my dog's name and I looked down at him while I was creating my character. Wish I was a bit more creative than that, but oh well. Oluf, is my berserker and any one who has seen the movie "Clerks" should understand that.

I have no constant theme with any of my toons, I always try to be at least (semi) original, and I like a name that either i can associate with or that will stand out as unusual without being stupid.

For example, my main is called Bruce. Don't ask why, I just loved the idea of a gnome called Bruce (he's Australian). Almightye just came as an afterthought really, don't think its too plagiaristic i just think its fun. My brigand is named after my sister, I just think Beatrice is a really beautiful name (its beh-ah-tree-chay not bee-ah-tris).

I just like calling them cool things, if the names be alliterative or onomatopoeiac then so much the better. Saw a great name the other day, 'Trooper Too', which i thought was incredible and just so fitting fot the toon (was an ikky bruiser).

Naming the toons is very important. The name totally decides what kind of character I'm going to make. I try to name my toons with either original or fun names, with inspiration from anywhere and everywhere. In EQ, I made a frog pally named Shlampur, because I was watching an episode of some dating show, where this weird german dude kept calling the women on the show "Shlampur! Dirty Shlampur!" which apparently means ***** in german. Sounded like a great name for a frog.

So far, my EQ2 toons have been the result of all the names I wanted being taken. I make a list of names, some from the fiction I write, and keep trying one after the other till I find one that isn't taken. Octavio sounded like a great name for a bard, so that's what he'll be. Scrapple came from being shot down about 10 times. My friend and I were brainstorming, and I thought Scrapple would be a good name for a troll who took to magic instead of fighting. The last names will be the most difficult, I think.

On a side note, I got to sign an urn in the graveyard yesterday. Felt great to have a weird little urn say "Scrapple was here". Now I know how these random things in the game get signed...
