Grouping levels and penalty?Follow

#1 May 13 2005 at 12:58 AM Rating: Decent
It's been a bit since i stopped playing EQ1 (about 2.5 years ago, ouch). I plan on giving EQ2 a try and was wondering if anyone knew if there was an exp penalty (distibution/no distribution) for different level types within the same group? I know there was one in EQ1 but i even forgot was that was; been awhile :(

Thank you for your help with this and i look forward to getting back into the grind!

Group exp in EQ2 is different from EQ1. Under level 28, you have to be within 6 levels to get exp together, and past 28 you can't be more than 25% beneath the highest level in the group.

Max Level (Min Level) i.e If you are (min level) you can group with anyone (max level) or lower and still get XP for kills.

You guys are kind of leaving out an important feature though.

You can also mentor people in your group.

For example, if I (41 Paladin) want to group with my buddy who just started and is a level 6 shaman, I just group with him and mentor him. Poof, I'm level 6, with all the appropriate spells and my gear properly geared to that level. I get 50% less experience for mobs that I couldn't get xp for anyway :) My buddy gets 5% extra xp for being mentored.

Personally I think its a huge feature to be able to group with anyone you want, while removing the possibility of any serious powerleveling.

Not that I have anything against PLing, I'm a big fan of it actually (as in, I found it a great deal of fun to PL my alts on another account). But SOE wanted to remove PLing and they did, but they added this other feature that I find quite useful.

Other day I'm passing through Antonica and this guy wants to kill grolven but he can't get anyone to help him. I group up with him with my pally and healer, and mentor. We kill grolven, he's thrilled, and I didn't have to stand by helplessly just because I was out of level with the guy.

Most people do not want to mentor in a exp group cause it ruins the exp for the person mentoring. Even if just mentoring a few levels you gain alot less exp. About the only thing mentoring is good for (in my opinion) is completeing a low level quest, greening out a named, and of course raids.

Mentoring is a great way not only to help folsk out, but to group and adventure with folks you might not normally be able to.

I've mentored many times to help folks out with quests, mobs, getting somewhere, or just acting as a guide in a new zone. The investment of helping those folks has much more value than a few blue tics of the exp bar.

Sure I didn't get much (if any) exp, but that isn't the point of mentoring, is it?

Last I heard, you can't mentor people who are below level 10...but it doesn't take much time to get beyond that level anyway.

Yeah, mentoring isn't that great for xp groups...all the ones I've been in, the mentor has had a 95% xp penalty. However, it is nice to go back and get quests you've missed, or to play with lower level friends, or to get treasure chests from mobs (because mobs that are gray to you do not drop treasure chests).

Thank you to all that have replied as it has answered this specific topic in a nice global way from different perspectives.

Props to you guys (Bluie, BumbiRagnar, Gossamer, Fronglo, Tutanbriarpaw, and Lerta)!

Now that i found the last collectors edition of EQ2 in my area, it should be happy hunting (hopefully). Guess i get a pet dragon too from what it looks like.

Actually I was in oakmyst the other day (was cleaning out my quest book or something) and some guy asked me to help him kill the fairies. I mentored down to level 7 (I'm 42 lol). I could hardly find any spells to use but that's another issue.

When you mentor, you lose 50% of your xp. On the other hand, you are getting xp for things that are grey to you. In addition, it lets you group with friends that you might not otherwise be able to group with.

I like helping people out, and mentoring lets me do that even when the person is 20 or more levels below.
