Ok, so I'm slow. Trying to clear out all the "greenie" quests in my 2 mains quest journals and both of them need to find a "gnoll spirit" to finish the Lore and Legend Quest.
I've killed hundreds of gnolls and none of them has a spirit.
I should mention that those quests have been in their journals since December '04 when they were still called "Mastery".
I may be answering my own question, but do I have to delete the quests and will it let me start over if I do?

I've had the same problem with some of the quests, my personal opinion is that you don't need to delete them.
I've finished a ton of the mastery quests, and even though the spirit was often hard to get, I eventually got it and I've never deleted one of the quests.
Just keep trying (the key is to kill the lowest level mobs you can find of that type, so you can kill hundreds quickly).
Others will advise you to delete the quest.
And yes, you can start over, as far as I know, but again, I haven't done it personally though I know others who have.

You can safely delete and restart the quest. Since DEC 04 there have been many fixes to bugged quests. I have restarted a few that were "stuck", and got all parts within 50 kills.
