Ok, Normally I would avoid posting a techincal question on the forums here. But I'm not getting anywhere with any of the avenues at SOE or anywhere else.

As of the last few patches, I've had some really crappy sound. Music start to skip, the sound is distorted, etc.

Now, at first I thought maybe it was my sound drivers. I have a Dell with a sound blaster live series sound card. Being a "stock card" of sorts, Soundblaster actually didn't have new drivers for my card, dell did, but they are still from 2003 when I bought the computer initially in DEC.

Anyone else have this problem and find a workable solution?

I'll get a new sound card if I absoultely have to, but would rather not if its an easy fix.

I've already tried changing the accelator on my sound card as per the help in game...but didn't really make much impact,.

So you are right, no new drivers since february 2003, have you installed the total package, i would try that if you havent.
You could also try to fill a tickets ingame if you havent tried it yet, also check if you have installed anything new in your pc at the time the problem started. It might not come from the patch but it might very well comes from it too.

The good news is alot of people are still using sb live! so if it came with patch it will probably be fixed pretty fast.

Just a thought, you may want to try to turn down the video settings on your computer. I know when I go to higher settings, I get lots of sound "skip".

I also read a post a while ago that talked about cable connections causing a skip in sound. It's caused by (non-techincal explanation to follow)the cable signal "ping-pong", and not the server or your computer.

I play on the absolute lowest settings, and I get a rythmic skip every second, no matter where I am or what Im doing. Maybe it's just my POS computer...

My question would be how much ram do you have? I know that sounds silly but seriously how much do you have? Now, let me explain. When EQ2 launched I was running 768M or Ram. I had a similar issue. After being logged in for a while it would start sounding fuzzy and stuff. Well I asked about it in OOC once and someone said it's because I was running only 768M of ram. Well I work in the computer field and when he said that I was like yeah whatever. Fastforward to a few months later to where I got a new machine with 1Gig of ram. Sound issues, gone bye bye. Hasn't messed up once. Now I know that sounds like an unlikely cause but that fixed it for me. Now, if you are running a Gig of ram or more then I'm at a loss as to the cause. Try a complete file check maybe? If worse comes to worse then go with a new card and see if that fixes it. I personally have had issues with Creative cards going out so that could be a cause. Anyway hopefully that helps. =)

I have a pentium 4 processor

128 ram video card

2 Gigs Ram..

My dell is not a standard "Dell" at the time I had them upgrade everything what they had as practically top of the line.

I have no problem running games like Half-Life, SIMS 2, or DOOM 3 for video or sound. Every other MMORPG I play works fine..

Its just EQ2, and its just after the most recent patches...

My drivers are as of december of 2003, so they are more updated than the ones from SB's site (I downloaded mine directly from Dell)..

My roommate actually had a newer sound card, I went to install it but the dell computer is configured a little differently and it wouldn't fit my computer (they are both PCI slots, but cords wouldn't fit his card.)

I'm going to look into buying a new one..

(oh, and thanks for the replies - this is 3 more than what I got on the SOE forums)

there is certainly a couple of pieces you can salvage from your current pc shouldnt be too expansive to upgrade.

if you know someone very good at building pc, its always better to have them custom made then buying premade machines. If you dont know anyone well, surely someone could point you toward a company with good reputation in the US, try to get a machine that you can upgrade yourself afterward. If you need to go get special drivers from the company... its a bad sign.

Also try to know every piece they put into it, and go read on the net about them. Like having a 128meg video card can mean alot of things and usually they put the worst possible card in it.

So before you agree on anything, ask a list of all they want to put in and go compare each piece with the competiton, and comapre prices. Computers is a business full of crooks, people are often unsecure bout it and they will just nod when they dont understand instead of asking questions, the sellers are happy about it they can sell you alot of crap easily. See myself i dont know **** almost but luckily i got a very good friend counselling me when its time to upgrade.
