Hello there fellow rangers, i got a question for you all, i am now currently a 15 predator. i havent got to use ranged weapon alot since we get it only at level 10, and after that i only use it to sometime pull something when i even bother using it.
Now i got back shot wich seems very nice when reading description but i can never hit anything that isnt grey.
My question is do you know a good trick to raise ranged skill, and would that solve my problem.
Right now i can only buy a short maple bow and its slow to recharge tho it does make some nice damage when it hits. Is our ranged dps as good as good dual wield dps ( base dps without skill i mean ) ?

As far as ive noticed (38 ranger) the transition from melee to ranged attacking is a slow process. The best skills are given in the late 20's, so until that i still mostly meleed.. meleyed.. mel.. used my dual wield weapons. Even now, i still melee 50% of the time (especially solo).

The best way to increase range skill is therefore in a group, using makeshift arrows to cut down your costs.

Until you reach 20 there isnt much diff between classes (apart from the obvious heal & tank side) and you will be much sought after at 25+ for your evac, disarm and group HO starter.

I guess what im saying is dont stress about ranged just yet.

as a side note to that you will find that your ranged will catch up pretty quick, and that it will be a valued part of your DPS stats. as an assassin, who isnt nearly as proficient as a ranger with ranged, i can put out about 1000 to 1500 points of damage with 3 skills. but when i was lvl 32 and in varsoon, i was hunting with a ranger that was doing about 1000 points of damage with one skill, he was using a sureshot bow, but still thats an aweful lot of damage. just remember to always have a good bow and always have the best arrows, you will find that you will put out tons of damage with ranged attacks.

Another thing you might try is offer to join a not-too-full casual type weekend group, (an existing duo or trio is perfect for this), and just use archery on the targets. Be sure to tell them out front that you don't want any swag... and that you just want a chance to polish your ranged skills and add some dps to their mobs...

They should be more than willing to let you make pincushions out of their targets... and if things go south in an occasional fight, you can always jump in and melee for them. You could also offer to disarm all the trapped chests that drop. This will help you raise that skill too!

In fact, scouts are the only class that can disarm traps... That said, if you haven't been working up the skill all along, be prepared to have a LOT of them go off in your face!

My suggestion would be to have the healer in the group cast a Heal over Time on you just before you spring each trap. (I play a warden in a regular trio and I always toss a Bloom on our ranger just before he disarms.)

If you don't set off the trap - well then no harm, no foul but if you do, the HoT should keep you from having to run back and absorb your shard!

(I read somewhere that chest traps are the number one killer in this game!)

A good way to practice ranged whilst solo is find an area where it is safe to run backwards (i.e. you are not going to run into anything nasty) pick on an easy single green mob, hit it with your bow and then ensnare it and then just run backwards pumping it with arrows.

A good way to practice both archery and disarm is to go after green con (no up arrows) mobs while you're still a predator. Pull with bow and finish them off with melee. I did betrayal quest with my predator to become a ranger. After 500 gnolls kill, archery is maxed and disarm is 3 points away from maxed. Initially almost all disarm trap on chest fails. After the disarm skill pass 70, have yet to fail a single disarm. Use 2 poisons and a high damage long bow when soloing. The poison will proc 50% of the time with long bow due to its delay. With maxed archery at level 21, I can knock 30% hp off a white con mob with just a single bow skill. With enough room to run backward, can get 2 skills off for even more damage. Only being using "tin arrow" since the extra damage of better arrows are not needed at the moment. Also upgrade your bow skill to apprentice 4 or adept 1. They are worth it.

Now I gotta jump off more cliff and building to max out safe fall skills...:)

On 2 out of my 4 characters, the #1 killer by far are chests. Only my shaman [Ward!] and chanter [darn mez breakers!] get slaughtered by other things more.

Just one other side note try to get the gregore's old bow quest from him in eldar grove you have to kill some hawks in forest ruins. when you return you get his "old bow" that is better than maple bow and has better stats. There are better bows later but its up in the 20's before you can really use them effectively. hope this comes in time to benefit you. Also I have 29th pally along with this 24th ranger on grobb but the ranger has gotten to be more fun since they are such good explorers.

Kitnip 29th paladin/Coric 24th ranger ---Neplusultra lvl 6 guild --In it for the fun!

The best way i've found is a variation of the old bow kite from eq1. There are several differences due to changes in gameplay but it works like a charm.

I've found that if you just run backwards, eventually the mobs give up and go back home. But when you first engage the mob the view will lock onto that particular mob. So if you hit the A or D keys your character will circle the mob(sort of an innefective strafe). If you hold back and to the left or right you'll run in a large circle. I've solo'd 20 or more mobs at a time using this method, and it gets a little boring but it works. Also when you kill a mob or right or left click on screen(not in inventory or hotbutton) it will disengage the lock on the mob and you'll just spin. For this just start shooting again once you've got a new target, or stop shooting then start again for the latter.

Casters are a real threat to this tact though, so if there is more than one caster in a group, forget it. One is possible but it's still pretty hard. This works great for all kinds of mobs of all levels. At lvl 14 i was able to kill a few 17 groups with this, so the xp is great. And your range, defense, and parry stats go right through the roof.

Hope it works as well for you as it did for me.

I increased my ranged while soloing by kiting. Running backwards while firing my throwing daggars. They did less damage but are faster than my bow Hope this helps

Use poison first.Equip and right click, hit 'use'. Arrows allow more damage. What I did to level up the bow skills,I went to the 'rotstuffed scarecrow' field and I waited till one of those suckers started walking. Otherwise,I'd get two of em. If you wait till one walks, you only get that one. So,he'd start walking,I would range him with the bow. The dual shot deal, forget its name. And then I'd hit range weapon, and just run backwards shooting arrow after arrow. The ability goes up quickly this way. Just kept doing it and doing it. No better way then practice, right? So I'm now maxed out on range. Everytime it inches up,I go up,too. I need a better bow, though,I think. I'm still using the bow I got when I hit Ranger. Now level 21 and it jsut doesn't do alot when in T.Steppes. I gotta do ALOT of running to get in alot of shots, then I get added to. Got to find a good, safe hunting area and arrows AREN'T cheap! I use Mordant Goo poison. Any better poisons available????
