If you pick Summoner as your subclass, you will get a pet at level 10 called Tellurian Recruit.

It will look like a beetle.

The Evil version of a Summoner also gets good pets if they become a necromancer.

But yet once your level 10 you start getting your pets. As a 45 Summoner I recommend getting your pet upgraded ASAP to the highest you can afford, especially your tank pet (which your first pet will be the tank pet). The Fire and Air pets you get later on are really junky IMO. I ran one of those DPS checkers with my various pets and my tank pet not only can take more damaage, but it did more then the fire and air pets could do.

Hope that helps.

all of what is said is good advice... and the upgrade to the pet is a must.. you won't believe the difference between the adpet 1 and app1 pets.. The adept3 and master 1's are even better.. I know most starting off wont be able to afford either of those.. but save up your cash so you can get one of those level of spells for your 24 tank pet..

hey, i am a new necro(evil summoner) and it was explained this way, the summoner classes get 3 types of pets(at least the necros do) a warlock, assasin, and fighter class. i think the good summoner(conjurer) gets similar pets, earth is fighter, and fire and others are like casters or rogue class pets. eash will be good ina specific situation(solo gona need a tank, caster for full group, etc) my nec is only 20, so i dont know much, but there ya have it

For necromancer, once you get the level 20 training pet you can ignore the level 24 pet. It is a very good adept 2 pet that will last beyond level 30 (maxed out at 32 I think). Even stronger than level 24 (app 4) pet. At level 24, the training pet max hit for 38 while level 24 (even at app 4) max hit below 30. Unless you have too much gold to blow on adept 3 or master 1 level 24 pet (minimum on my server is 30 gold), might as get the training pet and spend the gold on upgrading the rest of your spells to adpet 1 (only cost 1-3 gold each). IMHO, the pet healing spell is a *must* upgrade.

I would have to say if you can get the adept 3 or master 1 of the 24 pet to do it.. it will be the best thing you have bar none till you get your best tank pet at 38.. and you will want to master one or adept 3 that one as well.

As it stands right now your fighter pets tank better and even do more damage then any of the other pets... you can get as much parser info at eq2.eqsummoners.com to show you proof that the fighter pets are by far the best..
