I'm trying to figure out what Society to join, to make weapons... How do I know if I've joined the right one?

You should always belong to a Wholesaler and a Workshop, usually both in your home village.

You can't join the Workshop until you get your new trade title at level 10, and then, if you're an Outfitter, only the one Workshop will let you join.

This is not completely correct.
Yes - you should at all times join both a tradeskill society along with a wholeseller society, as long as SoE hasn't chosen to change it.

Apart from that - you should check out this website - it explains it all to you along with a lot more:
website
You will soon find out that you should join a wholesale society first, lvl up your tradeskill to lvl 10. Get a certificate for the trade-area you would like and then join the tradeskill society that fits your new certificate.

In each city-area should you be able to find one of each time of tradeskill society, so it does really not matter where in the city you chose to live or work. It all depends on you.

Good luck in the future.

What I meant by *usually in your home village* is that most people choose to join their 2 Societies that are situated in their home village because that's where they gate to Smiley: smile

Yes you can join the Societies in any village (max of 2 at any time) but it just makes sense to join your home village. Unless of course you're a smarty pants who always uses an illusion when they gate which means you will gate elsewhere Smiley: grin
