PvP? A few questionsFollow

{Hello!}

Yeah, I'm sure more than a few of you got that one. Here's the deal for those that don't; I have spent the better part of the last year and some odd months playing FFXI, and although I find the game to be enormously entertaining, I also find it to be severely lacking in some areas...

... One of which is PvP implementation. For anybody who has done a Ballista in FFXI, you'll understand just how poor a system it is.

Now, I tried WoW when it first came out (should have just tried this >.<), solely because I wanted to see how well the PvP was done. What I encountered was not at all what I was looking for in a game. So I went back to FFXI, and all was right in the world once more, for a time...

... But soon I found myself in the same old rut that I had been in before, either trying to grind xp, put together a party for Promys, or hopelessly attempting to raise my crafts while still maintaining a profit. I should also mention that I do love my crafts! Yet another reason i should have just came to this right off the bat =P.

So now I am here, looking into EQII, where I kind of knew I would end up anyways, only a few months behind. The game appears to have everything I am looking for in a MMO, save some form of PvP. Now, I'm not saying I want anything as widespread as WoW, but something a step above Ballista would be nice.

I guess what I'm getting at is, does anybody have any idea if/when PvP will be brought into EQII? Any ideas on how it will function? Can anybody provide me with a link on the subject, either to SoE's official site, or someplace else?

Thank you in advance to those who help. I know I could find this stuff on my own, but I would appreciate the community's views on the subject as well. Anyways, off to whatver it is that SoE's site is called, I'm gonna scan through their archives some more :(.

Alas, in theory pvp is not forthcoming at all in EQ II.

At least, that was the point of view of the dev's when the game was released. They were pretty adamant that there would be no pvp in the game.

I'm not sure if this is still their point of view though, although I'ld never play on a true pvp server, there are a lot of people who just love to pvp, or at least play on a pve server which gives the option to either play pvp or not. (which is what I like to be able to, choose that is)

Can't seem to find a link though, but my searching skills never were that good.

Incorrect. Smedly just but out a letter a few weeks ago to the community, and PvP in some form will be on the way. From that letter (Emphasis added):

Quote:
The EQII team is still hard at work on the existing game, and I think that all of the new content the team has added since launch is pretty amazing. In the past few weeks alone, we've added several new high level raids, an in-game mail system, Mentoring (something we're really excited about), two additional character slots for all subscribers , and we just added the new merchant system, which will allow players to sell items in game without having to leave their computer running. That's on top of the usual game additions -- dozens of new quests, spells, items, tradeskill recipes, etc. You can expect us to keep up this pace for a long time to come. Another part of the EQII team is hard at work on our first Expansion Pack, coming out later this year. We've taken a lot of your recent ideas and feedback into account, and we're working on some innovative ways characters can move and interact with the environment. Also, we're taking the first step towards introducing PvP competition with the introduction of a new type of combat!

Thank you both for your input. ^^

I managed to find that little blurb myself, but in my fatigued state, I never read through it right to the end, and missed the part about the PvP >.<. It's actually the news release that piqued my interest in coming over to the game in the first place... I was sold on all the things they did to make crafting a more viable option (Did I mention I love my crafts?), as well as the fact that the developers seem to be adding new content all the time!

As long as its voluntary or only on some servers, I'm ok with it. Otherwise I guess I will join the people leaving for other games. I can even live with the server exchange, though I think its pretty awful, but forced PvP would be it for me. But I would expect they wouldn't do that... at least I sure hope!

I despise PvP and frankly, have never met a mature adult that enjoys PvP. I realize that I've just insulted a bunch of people, but I said "met", as in, know personally. I'm not talking FPS players either, I'm talking MMORPG players that prefer PvP that are mature adults. Never met one, personally speaking.

Well PVP can be fun. I like the PVP system in WoW. I hated PVP on EQ because of the whole gotta run back to your corpse thing. But in wow that's not an issue and it's fun to get on and dual your friends or what not. I haven't tried the new pvp honor system yet but I hear it's pretty good. As far as EQ2 goes I think PVP would put an interesting turn to the game. Especially if it was centered around Qeynos vs Freeport. And I have hear rumors about that type of a system coming but it's just rumors. Now forced PVP ***** that. But like in wow you can turn off your pvp easily enough. Something like that would be a good implementation I think. I guess we'll have to wait until E3 in May to find out if the exapnsion is gonna have the PVP implementation with it or not.

Dear lord, I hope it's nothing like the PvP in WoW... even on the optional servers, from what I understand, it's just a bunch of punk kids playing Pallys, trying to provoke people who are twenty levels lower than them into putting a flag up... holy crap, that's a lot of 'p's, eh? ^^

In regards to PvP and WoW:
I never liked PvP (other than games like Quake and such), so I have never gotten my Ballista license. :P However, I joined an RP server on WoW and the PvP there was actually pretty fun. I've done duels, single PvP combat and group PvP combat. I've been only on one offensive raid since I usually take the stance of a defender.

With that said, going onto PvP servers are just a bad idea unless you're really really really into the PvP (or a ********* or both). I've heard nothing but bad stories and experiences concerning PvP servers. If you still can, try an RP or PvE server.

Of course, recently, the Honor (aka Gankfest) System was unleashed. It sucks major... yeah. And best (worst?) of all, it brings out the worst player types on all servers. I will assume this will occur in EQ2 as well.

Play whichever game you want, but realize the experience you have from FFXI will be vastly different than what you will experience in EQ2 when they release a PvP system.
