Why is it that lots of people will get offended when you inspect them without asking? Is this some kind of faux-pas that I should know about? Someone actually told my bf one day as he was silently inspecting them, "You should have asked first!" and stormed off in a huff. What's up with that? Is it somehow understood that you first ask someone before inspecting them or something? Smiley: oyvey
My thoughts on the matter instinctively are,
GAHHHH get over it! It's not like we're looting your corpse.

For some folks, I guess it's a big deal... It originally comes out of EQ where I think it developed as PC behaviour. IMHO, it's really a non-issue but since I'm not looking to offend anyone, I just tend not to inspect at all. Kinda silly though...

In real life, if you want to check out what someone is wearing you just do it! Can't imagine walking up to someone and saying, "Hey, man, do you mind if I look at your shoes?"

I didn't know people would even know if someone inspected you in EQ2! w

In FFXI it was most impolite to do it without asking first but people actually get the 'Caitiri is staring intently at you' message in EQ2? No one told me! orz

Really with all the new people, I inspect before I invite. No App2 apell/art wielding, acolyte gear wearing, incomplete gear suite or non-drinking/eating folks if at all possible please!

Had a group where the other shaman wanted healer duty split up and I asked if he would Ward or I. He replied, 'what does ward do?'

Later on he got miffed when I was trying to compare Group Ward level [we were going to attack a large, hard group with no tanks, just 4 mages and 2 shamans and I wanted to see if I should be casting Group Ward {Adept 1} or him {I deduced it to be App 2}].

Level 15 shaman... and apparently a twinked alt too. And had no idea where you could find App 3 spells.

I think I'll go right on inspecting, rude or not till I'm at least level 30.

BTW, just tested and you don't get informed if a player inspects you.

Yeah I remember this being an issue in EQ. I personnaly don't care. But some people it just sets them off.

in eq1 if someone got inspected enough times in a short amount of time it would lag them out and disconnect them. kinda funny to do at times to certain people.

It is a roleplay thing too...had a Dwarf shout at me for 10 min (All caps) for inspecting him in EQ, have not ran into that in EQ2 yet though.

FYI
The player inspection issue was when people inspected as a prelude to begging platinum or items from anyone they felt was better off than themselves. This wasn't merely "can I bum some food" begging, but demanding seriously high level items because they felt they should be uber in minutes, if not sooner, and felt that it was their right to aggressively panhandle.

In response, pretty much everyone started to get offended if anyone inspected them, since they presumed the very next action in the chain (much like an HO :) was to aggressively beg. In my case, I'd inspect to see if people NEEDED something, as I tended to make free banded armor for newbie fighters, back when they weren't 98% pre-twinked.

I expect people remember those days and behave accordingly, unaware they're in a new world now...

Also from PvP servers in the early days on EQ 1 when you was aloud to kill and steal...People would inspect to see if it was worth the fight then call there buddies or try and gank you thierself, personally i felt the same way in those days, but now no harm in inspection it has just became a common courtesy to ask.

Wow ... I have never heard of someone getting upset about being inspected. Seems rather foolish to me. As somone previously said, it's like asking someone if you can look at their shoes when you are standing in front of them. Perhaps there has been relevance in different games, but not this one, so there is no need to get your pantaloons in a bunch.

Personally I would most likely laugh myself out of my seat if someone asked if they could inspect me.

I inspect everyone I group with, talk to, and interesting folks I walk by. I have seen some amazing things by inspecting.

DO YOU FIND THIS USE OF ALL CAPS OFFENSIVE? IRRITATED BY IT ARE YOU? WHY? IT'S NOT LIKE YOU ARE HEARING ME. IN FACT IS IT NOT MORE READABLE?

And some people equate being inspected as being stared at which they then equate to being ogled/etc. I wouldn't call it a rule, but it's become a custom.

I do find it strange to find this issue in an EQ2 forum though. Since when would an EQ2 player know if she was being inspected?

Offensive, not really. Irritated, yeah, though not to the extreme; I would classify it more as "annoying". Why? Because it gives me eyestrain and seems as if you feel your text is more important than others' text. No, I'm not hearing you, but your text definitely stands out more than others, which, again, seems a bit arrogant. No, in fact I don't find it more readable. Perhaps others, such as you, do find it more readable though. I find it gives me a headache after a while.

In summation, unless it's a quick phrase like "RUN!", "HELP ME!", or "OUT OF MANA!", I tend to ignore things in all caps. They're usually just advertisements for things I don't want, or arrogant folks who think I should be required to read their statement or answer their question.

Yep, that's exactly why it used to bug me in EQ as well. The actual inspection didn't bother me, and people admiring my gear certainly didn't, but it was almost always followed by a "You have great gear, so give me lots of stuff" type tell.

As did you, Tut... and now me as well!

But judging from his post count, I'd be willing to bet that he has just come over from ogaming and as a new member of the family, I figure we can't fault him for necro posting to a thread that he didn't have the chance to respond to when it was current...

Maybe we could cut him a little slack... just this once... :-)

I always think when someone comes up next to me and stops, (i assume they are inspecting) that they maybe thought my toon looked cool and wanted to check me out. I always considered it semi of a compliment to be inspected - like the player wants to see specifically how nice your toon is.
