#1 Mar 26 2005 at 1:03 PM Rating: Decent
Hello all, maybe you can give me some advice. ive played FFXI for a 1 1/2 years as a Warrior and a Black Mage and got very high up in level (almost to max) For the past 4 months I have been playing World of Warcraft and really like it. Someone told me to try out EQ II. on WoW im a High Level Rogue which I love to play. I like both straight out fighting and also magicial characters.

I guess what Im wondering is what is EQ II like comparerd to these other games ive played, and possiably what classes races I should look into. I love to solo as much as possiable. And I love armor and weapons that look cool, I mean who dosent :-)

Thanks for any help you guys and girls can give me :-)

Well, I don't know what game those above were playing but soloing in EQ 2 is a breeze. Not as easy as in WoW but then what is?

There are high and low points in soloing with everquest 2. You will find that some quests just cannot be done when the mobs are white (same level as you) to you solo, though in many cases you can go back and do the quest later when they are lower level.

Soloing is easy, you will want to learn about Heroic Opportunities, they make it so you can solo more effectively. They are similar to the Skill Chains from FFXI.

Over all you can usually take on Yellow mobs that are labled as Solo, or green mobs labled as group as a solo character with little to no difficulty.

Grouping however, is the best way to get quests done, earn exp, and find loot.

To you left in this web page is some info on classes and races, just find what you want under the "Basic Information" heading.

And if you do join, and come to the Innothule server, say hi to the Protectors of the Lost Faith.

Anybody that says you can't solo in EQ2 is just ignorant or misleading you. Just two days ago, my lvl 28 (now 29) warden was killing lvl 30-33 solo monsters in the D'Morte Burial Chambers, made 50%xp in about 3 hours. I can take lvl 27 group^^ monsters, did it for about 2 hours last night, just killing the placeholders for Bloodtalon (Mighty Griffons), I made exactly 31%xp, and I wasn't actively killing stuff, just taking down the Griffons when they popped (Bloodtalon didn't come up).

Most classes are good soloers. If you want to make it easier on you choose a class that can heal themselves. If I were you I'd go with Paladin, or Monk/Bruiser, because they are more offensive then priests and have some skills to heal themselves. Tanks are generally hard to come by, so you should be asked to group often even if you want to solo most of the time. Or go with a healer, I'd recommend fury since they are the most offensive oriented (you want monsters to die fast), altough all priest hold their own when soloing.

As far as grouping goes, realize you will never match the xp of well organized groups, but you will beat those of amateur groups and those that die a lot. Grouping is not as bad as FFXI, just putting 3 random classes together can make a good group regardless of the classes if the players are skilled (altough you usually want at least a good tank). 90% of my grouping time from 1-29 was with my 2 RL friends : A Berzerker and a Dirge.

for anyone who says you can't solo.. see the sig.

with Iaini I've grouped 3 times...

Embeth I've grouped 2 times...

Nerris I've grouped 2 times...

to put it bluntly, yes you can solo in EQ2, what you cannot do in EQ2 is solo your way to the level cap in 30 days or less (if you grind it).. for that you'll want to go to WoW.

as for solo'ing in an MMO.. well when I group I group with RL friends mainly.. or maybe I'm just in a mood to game and not have to deal with the "issues" that occur when you group. Sometimes I like to push my characters to see just what they can handle and how effective a class can solo is a BIG indicator, to me, of how well they will add to a groups capabilities.

Only problem with the Trial of the Isle is that freakin download! I bought the regular box version, and have not downloaded it myself, but I have no idea how you could play it, if it is not the full version for download. The box version is about 10 CDs, and clocks in at over 6 gigs. That is a rough download, no matter how you look at it >< lol

noo the trial of the isle is only 17 meg.. I've DL'ed it for a friend who couldn't while he was at work but wanted it. Since I had time I told him I'd DL it and he could swing by my place on the way home and pick it up..

it's only the island, so it's quite dinky (if you have broadband)

now, DL'ing the full game from SOE after a web purchase.. umm.. no. go buy the DVD and spare yourself 5 to 7 hours of waiting.

save your money

seriously.

you'll love it at first, then sony will introduce an epic game-altering change, and you'll wish you never started.

formerplayer, EQ2 is sony's game. Sony has the right to change the game; game altering or not. If it does not live up to your expectation just move on. As a matter of fact, playing any MMORPG is just wasting time. It is purely for entertainment like watching a movie. Feeling bitter about an MMORPG is just sad. I've played 3 toons in EQ1 to 65 including a warrior. Still walk away from it after finding it no longer giving me as much fun as EQ2. And I'll do the same if a better game shows up in the future. ( WoW is not good enough to pull me away from EQ2 )

To OP, just give the game a try, you never know. It all boils down to personal taste.

I also like to solo. Whoever said some fights require groups is correct. The one thing about EQII is that often people will group for one event or fight rather than a night long 3 or 4 or more hour grouping event.

I like this. I like to get a sandwich when I'm hungry and wander off to the bathroom when I want to without fearing I'm putting a group in jeopardy.

I am playing a pet class on EQII which I never did on EQI and I really like it. I can usually find things to solo in the zones I've been in so far and I've been able to really contribute to Writs for the guild levels, also solo.

There is a place for solo characters and I think EQII is more suited to the solo player, especially 'growing up' than EQI was. Maybe it will be different once I reach the 40s and 50 but right now, mid 20s I'm having a SOLO blast!

Cocktails, you should download the Trial of the Isle and play the game to see how you like it.

Keep in mind that there are 4 starting classes: fighter, scout, mage, and priest. Once you get to level 10, you pick your next sub-class. At level 20 you specialize even more. Unlike FFXI you do not "start over". You just step into your next path and keep getting bigger and better. You can't accumulate many different sub-class's.

Check out the SOE web site for details on the classes.

From what you describe, you might like starting as a scout and progress to Bard.

Race: there are different races, some good, some evil, some both. They do have slight differences with starting stats, but in the long run it may not matter. So you could be a Ogre Conjurer or a Gnome Berzerker.

Note that the good races start in the good city of Qeynos, the evil races start in the evil city of Freeport. Both are full, vibrant cities with complete adventures, zones, quests, and NPC's.

Armor/Weapons: There are discussions to get SOE to make different types of armor looks. THere are many similiarities between the armor, so no big points there. As with all new games, patchs and updates will fix that.

Keep in mind that EQ2 will be a bit more complex than WoW, and the look will be a little more like FFXI.

Solo: Already been covered. More content being added all the time.

Good luck!
