the solo game consists of whacking wanderers for no quest credit, no loot, and very little xp.

I totally disagree with that comment. I've played on both Freeport and Qeynos side. There are quite a number of quests that involves killing wanderers. The "no loot" part is completely wrong. Killed bears, farmers, deers, rats, snakes, stags etc etc, roughly get 1 chest every 10 kills. So usually gets 3-5 chests in an hour play. Best so far is started the session with killing 3 wolfs and 3 chest drops in a row. The loot includes armour (yellow con), weapon, shield, adept book and tradeskills book. However, in EQ2 you do have to select your target carefully. Some mobs are much tougher than their con. The agro range in EQ2 is already very small. The same distance will get you agro in EQ1. Very little xp is also completely wrong unless you think 0.5-1% xp for killing a blue con is "very little xp". Let's see, killing green con double arrow up give you close to 3% xp, group of 3 green con group mobs gives you close to 2% xp. The xp might not be as good as grouping, but then you get to keep all the loot...:) I'm also a casual player that plays 1-2 hours during weekdays and solo 99% of the time. Tried WoW, it does not gives me the immersion and satisfaction that I get from EQ2. Frequently look for HO when playing WoW. With a better grouping dynamics option in EQ2, it is a perfect fit for me. So do not want to see soe turning EQ2 into something like WoW.

Everytime Shadowrelm posts I wonder what game he was playing, because it wasn't eq2.

Quote:

eq is trying to make the game more casual gamer friendly. largely in part to the unprecedented sucess of WOW. they cant ignore that large chunk of potential income, and even though EQ2 fills a niche that WOW doesnt, the powergamer game, the sheer numbers for WOW blow every other game out of the water.

Well not really every game... lineage numbers are pretty insane, makes WoW look like... well EQ2 :)

WOW has more players after a few months, than EQ1 ever did in its entire 5 to six years. all that with inferrior graphics.

Yes its an extremely successful game. I'm glad you are enjoying it a lot. More power to you. Why are you posting on an EQ2 site if you hate the game so darn much?

EQ2 is sucessfull. dont get me wrong. but from my perspective, and im sure alot of other people feel the same way, EQ2 stops being "fun" at about level 20, and is an outright grind at level 25 where your sole purpose for playing is to get levels.

Then once again you aren't playing the same game I am. I never grind, I'm in the mid 30s, I'm having fun, and I'm not sure what you are talking about. I never play just to get levels, I am however, quite quest obsessed (they are like peanuts hehe, can't just eat one). I am always doing something to finish a quest, or raise one of my tradeskillers, I rarely if ever kill stuff just for xp.

why?

because the quests in EQ2, well before level 20, are mostly group only. the dungons are mostly group only. most camps are group only. the solo game consists of whacking wanderers for no quest credit, no loot, and very little xp.

Ummm way way way different view than I have of the game. I've done over 400 quests, and if I grouped up for more than 25% of them, I'd be shocked. And of those, some were simply to make it a little faster, not because I had to. And a few because it was fun to do them with some friends. Maybe, and I mean MAYBE, 10% required a group.

Quote:

EQ2 designed their game around the group aspect, and IMO have done a better job with group dynamics and player diversity than any other game. they did a good job at what they set out to do.

EQ2 has taken vast steps to improve solo playing enjoyment, leveling and loot. Maybe all that happened after you went to play WOW.

Quote:

in EQ2, after level 20, or even a bit before, the majority of the game is off limits to you unless you group. and grouping takes.....Time. the exploration is gone. the playing is limited. and what you can experience in the game is severly limited to the amount of time you.....play.

You are just flat wrong. Again I'm glad you like WOW so much, but making up crap about EQ2 isn't going to win any arguments.

in EQ2, you beg for a group or you dont really advance.

in WOW, you bag for a group while you are advancing.

I've NEVER begged for a group.

Please stop talking about EQ2 like you've played it, because it sure seems like you didn't.

If you couldn't figure out how to play the game, that's fine, you found something that you could handle. Maybe the reason WOW is so much more popular than many other video games is because its easy, did you ever consider that?

People like to ding. They love to feel like they are advancing.

Remember the free game you could download that would run in the background on your computer and play an RPG for you? Basically it would just say stuff like "you see an orc!" "you hit an orc for 10 hps" "you hit an orc for 25 hps" "you have killed an orc" "an orc has dropped some treasure" etc.

You'd get experience and you'd level and you'd get stuff, and you never actually did anything.

People literally had it running in the background on their pcs fo DAYS and weeks at a time (I'm not joking).

Its because, despite how stupid it sounds, they got some sort of sense of satisfaction and achievement out of it, however minute it was.

Maybe WOW is so incredibly popular because its just that much easier than other MMORPGs. There's less stress, less challenge, less work involved. There's nothing wrong with that, if that's what you are looking for, which obviously many people are.

From what I've heard, WOW is just easier.

Again, nothing wrong with that, these are hobbies, if you like your hobbies gentle and kind, that's great. I want something more challenging, maybe a bit more frustrating than that :)

I'm really not trying to be mean or flame you Shadow, but I do get frustrated with your view of the game. Its just so distorted from what I've experienced, I keep wondering what you were doing or if you maybe played some other game and only thought it was EQ2 because its sure nothing like what I'm doing and seeing.

Lineage btw is huge in Korea, they play it in internet cafes, that's where the big numbers come from.

And...

WoW = checkers

EQ2 = chess
