Heyas-
Could someone explain how the skill tier system works? When do you
stop using kick, wild swing etc? Exactly what does buying apprentice, adept and master skills do? I hope that this isn't a dumb question. I have a paly.

There are replacements for most of the skills as we progress in levels, however it's not all neatly laid out for us, players have had to discuss and figure it all out for themselves. And there are still discussions and debates going on about which skills are upgrades for what.

On the SoE site, in the Guardian forum there's a very long post going on and a list that is being constantly upgraded. Probably worth taking a look there in the Paladin forum.

As for the actual level of skills, it's exactly what you might think. Each level of skill/spell does more damage, heals better etc. The trick is working out which ones are worth spending big money on, and which you will only use for a few levels.

Whatever you decide, try to get App 3 or 4 at least, which are player made. If you're into crafting you will be able to make the first few yourself.

As far as replacing skills such as kick I have a pretty simple method that I follow. First and foremost, when I get a new skill that is on the same re-use timer as the old one I will stop using the old one. A very crude example would be Kick at say lvl 10 and then at lvl 20 you get Kick Harder (yes im making the spell names and lvl's up). When you use Kick Harder, the icon for the regular Kick goes grey also and can't be used till it refreshes. At that point, I stop using Kick and begin using Kick Harder.

Sometimes you may not get an upgrade in the above manner for a spell. An example was Smite for my defiler. It was a low level DD spell but at around lvl 14 I recieved Grey Wind. They were not on the same timer but Grey Wind was doing 40 or 50 dmg while Smite was doing like 15. It became apparent to me that Smite was no longer strong enough to justify using the power on it.

Buying actual spell upgrades such as apprentive 3 or adept 1 upgrades the strength of that spell. You do not have to buy apprentice 2, then 3, then 4, then adept 1 bla bla bla. If you can afford it and can find it you can go from regular apprentice 1 directly to master 3. It is highly recommended that as a pally you will want to upgrade any damage spells, heals, and taunts that you have. Buff spells are nice to upgrade but can also be a waste of money. i.e. an AC buff at apprentice 1 may give you 100 more AC. At adept 1 it may give you 105 AC. Is that worth the cash to buy it?
