App IV vs. Adept IFollow

#1 Mar 18 2005 at 4:16 PM Rating: Decent
Hello all... I wanted to get some information on the improvement of spells as you go from App I through Adept 3.

Is there a website someplace, or has anyone sat down and crunched some numbers to tell what is the improvement. I hear various accounts of how much better it is to go up one rank.

Any help would be much appreciated.

enjoy

There is this:

http://eq2.playerhaven.net/spells.asp

It looks promising but there's not much data in it yet.

Besides Spell level, output is also definitely based on your level and possibly on your skill in the school of magic.

I think alot of it depends on the type of spell. I have found Buff spells are not that much different if your only upgrading them 1 level. I upgraded one of my conjuror spells from app 4 to adept 1, and frankly Id just assume have that 2 gold back. I think it had about +3 more to power on the buff, and thats about it.

A spell like invis though is worth upgrading every chance you get IMO. The higher your app (or adept) in invis the higher level the mobs have to be to see past your invis. This can be a life or death situation for those who like to explore dangerous area's, or complete pick up quests (such as collecting items throughout a dangerous area.

I also feel upgrading your pets to the highest level possible is worth it as well. I went from a app 4 tellurian solder to adept 3 and it can tank ALOT better. It also can put out more DPS then my Adept 1 air and my adept 1 fire pets, at least according to one of those DPS counters somebody was using in a group one day.

None of this is tested fact, just my observations. Hope it helps though.

Direct Damege spells can make a huge difference too. Take for instance Shrouded Strike, a lvl 19 Predator spell. The adept 1 version does just over 200 points of damage on average, while the Adept 3 version does about 300 pts. A very noticeable difference.

The spells I consider a must upgrade are DD, pets, heals, lifetaps ect.

hope this helps =P

Okay, so I am understanding that it would be a good idea to up grade from app IV to Adept I if it is a DD or Pet spell (I am a necro). Otherwise... save the money.

Okay. Lesson learned.

Thanks for the comments.

The general rule for almost all spells/skills is that by upgrading you increase the output of the spell by a percentage and that percentage increase is greater than the increase in the power cost to cast it.

For example, you may have an APP4 Direct damage spell that costs 10 power and does 100 damage, the ADEPT1 version may do 115 damage and cost 11 power. ie for a 10% increase in power you get a 15% increase in damage.

Effectively your skills/spells get more "power" efficient as you upgrade them from APP1 to ADEPT3 and beyond. This holds true for almost every skill/spell.

This translates in game terms to quicker kills (and therefor lower health loss) and less power used to achieve the kill (and therefor less down time and vulnerability between kills).

Efficient use of power is possibly the most fundamental concern of soloists and group players alike, so you should always look to have APP4 in any skill at the first opportunity. In reality you will be restricted as to how far you can upgrade (Adept1 to 3) by your cash flow. Buy what you feel comfortable with. If a spell upgrade is going to cost you 10gp but you can improve your character more with an equipment upgrade that costs 1gp, upgrading the spell would obviously be an inefficient way to go.

You get the best bang per buck increase going from APP1 to APP4 (considering most APP4's are <40s). If you are flush with cash, go all the way to Adpet3 too, if not don't sweat it, your money is probably best spent elsewhere.

Also, examining spell/skill upgrades on the vendors will tell you the gains you will receive - by doing so you wont be flying blind when following the skill upgrade path.

I would recommend upgrading any pet aug's you might have also. Agitation, which is my pet aug, doubled the physical mitigation increase (62 to 125) for my pet between App2 and Adept1 versions. That's a huge bonus for his tanking ability and I have way more luck soloing orange mobs, and I spend much less power in healing him.

Hope this helps.
