Preferred Race for a Mage Class? More INT or AGI?Follow

#1 Mar 17 2005 at 2:45 PM Rating: Decent
Hello Anyone,

I am just starting with EQ2 and am considering creating a necromancer (my friends are all evil, so I figure a conjuror is out).

Does anyone have an opinion on the importance of INT in this game? How important is AGI? I am considering the Erudite, the Gnome, and the Ratunga races for my character. My first pick would be the Rat because it is new and different. It has 25 INT and 30 AGI. But, if INT is important to my power levels (mana right?), then I would go Gnomer, with 2 more INT and 5 less AGI. I would not consider the Erudite unless I was convinced that the only thing that mattered was INT for a caster.

My fear is that I will choose a character on fun, and in the latter levels, it will be much weaker than others who chose wisely initially. (Take my human druid in EQ1 for example).

Your thoughts (and flames) are welcome!

Base your character on fun. Minor differences in stats can always be made up with gear - especially in the latter levels.

It's a game. Play, have fun.

Just my thots....

So far there has been no indication that race has any long term effects. In fact, with SOE's deterrmination for character balance, they will place no difference in any race, effectively making all races the same, just with different looks.

The slight difference in stats is made up with racial trait picks, and level bonus picks. Those are the green "plus" signs you get at certain levels, and you get to pick 1 of many different upgrades.

If you always pick the ability to get a higher INT, your INT will go up. If you always pick the AGI upgrade, that will go up.

As a Erudite Conjurer, I've always picked the INT upgrade, and select my gear by INT stat bonus. My INT is currently 121 buffed, STR is 37.

Keep in mind that different stats affect the power pool of different archtypes. WIS affect the Priests power, INT affects the Mages, power, STR affects the Fighters power, AGI for the Scout.

You can call up your Persona page by hitting the P-button, and mouse over INT. And by going to the Help Menu under the EQII button, you will find this:

Intelligence: Affects your ability to deliver magical damage. Intelligence affects power for the mage and its classes and subclasses.

So the higher your INT, the better. Would a few extra points you got at the beginning make a difference when you are level 30 or 40? Perhaps not. Until the numbers are crunched and databases built, we may not know.

But be patient - EQ/EQ2 players are known to be a resilient lot. :)

AGI has two purposes. One is to provide power for scouts...irrelevent to you. The other is to avoid hits (I think it also raises AC just a little). Avoiding hits is good, but as a mage, you shouldn't be getting hit in the first place. If you are, a few points of AGI probably won't make much of a difference. Especially since the recent agility nerf, which made it much less effective. (It was a little overpowered previously, from what I've heard.) So don't worry about agility when choosing a race.

As others have said, 5 points won't make much of a difference in the long run, and the races you listed all have high INT, good for mages. So just pick the one that you like best.

I, too, want to be a necro with my main, Rizz. As well, I, too, based it on fun. However, I like the Tier'Dal. So that's what I picked. (Actually I originally wanted a DE warlock, but RP reasons made me decide on necro.) If you like the Ratonga, pick the Ratonga! And if you are on Faydark server, see you in Freeport!

Doesn't matter what race you pick as there is gear that will aid you in raising stats. But as guideline for mages: INT > than any other stat, with Power coming in as 2nd priority. No other stat matters to you more than those two.

Best wishes
