Buff Techniques, Selling stuff, and InflationFollow

#1 Mar 16 2005 at 2:39 AM Rating: Decent
It took me forever to figure out my buffs and how to use them properly. Now I think I have the hang of it. I'm a level 16 Outfitter and last night I made a Pristine Burlap Blouse (level 19) on my first try. Then I made pristine burlap pantaloons (level 18). I got 18 % exp for the blouse and 14% exp for the pantloons! woo hoo...

I didn't know I got 3 extra buffs at level 10, until 5 levels later, hehe.

For light Tailoring I have a hotkey bar set up with the following tailoring buffs set up (in order from 1 to 6):

+prog -power, +dura -power, +prog -dura, +dura -prog, +prog chance fail, +dura chance fail.

So what I do is I start buffing with 1, 3, 5. When the tick hits, if it's a normal tick (-10 +50 plus the buff modifiers (-16 +78)) then I continue to buff with 1,3,5.

As soon as I see a failure (-46 or more durability loss) I immediately cast 2,4,6 (simple shift my fingers over one spot). That usually results in a +20 +25 on the next tick. If so, I'll gradually go back to prog. I'll do 2,4,5 or 2,3,5. Keeping the durability buff in the mix until i've regained my losses (I try to keep it above 25% on the Pristine bar). Then back to 1,3,5 for progress.... Repeat strategy. Works great for me!! Those dura buffs really sap my power though. Definitely need HIGH satiation drink or better for crafting anything higher than your own level.

Anyone have any other techniques they use?

Anyhow, my other question (sorry, two topics, one post...) is about selling stuff... I'm not a scholar, but I can make level 10 alchemy things like Stroma Wash. Then again, nowadays apparently any level 1 person can do it with the new skills they added, hmpf... I buy tuber cheap, craft a bunch of Wash and sell it for between 1.5 and 2.5 silver. THat's about 600-800% profit. They sell like hotcakes...

Why would someone buy wash for 2s when they can make it for like 40c? Oh well. keeps my bank account increasing :).

How about a topic about inflation? I've been trying to maintain stroma oil and resin prices at 1s. Some people sell for 4s and some sell for 40c. I usually buy out the 40c people so I can have the cheapest price, heheh. is that bad? I tend to sell for 95c so that I'm always the lowest price for stroma stuff and it seems to work well. I like to try to keep inflation in check by not being too greedy. would like to hear some thoughts about this though.. thanks :)

To answer your second question: If you want easy money, then you can pick it up by crafting the non-critical items and pricing them fairly....this you have already found out. I used to do the same thing, but then decided I did not wish to use my time making items that, while I could earn payment for them, I could not gain experience. Many others think the same way, which leaves the market open for someone like yourself who is looking to pad the bankroll.

As per your buffs: you are on the right track. Under "oh my god help" you will find some posts with suggestions for Provisioners, but the ideas are the same no matter what one crafts...balancing your durability, progress and power so that you can make the best item.

Here is an alternate method for achieving consistent pristine combines.

For the first half of the process, (the crude and shaped bars), use only your newer buffs. Over the course of the 2 bars of progress, you should be able to “bank” a large portion of durability since the program remembers what numerical value you actually have even though it doesn’t show you anything above 100%.

During each pulse without an event, you can choose to either cast the 2 buffs that don’t cost power, or if you have plenty of power, cast all 3. During any pulse with an event, counter the event first and then cast the other buff(s).

After you cross over into the third progress bar, switch to using the +progress buffs. This will speed up the second half of the combine while using up the durability that you have already banked.

If all goes well, you should finish the combine with pristine and still have plenty of durability left showing in the forth bar. If the second half of the combine goes badly, you can always switch back to the durability buffs and finish safely but a little more slowly.

This method will really take off when you hit level 20 since your third set of buffs will be a turbo-charged version of the first set! I find that when using this method, (along with the third set of buffs), I can usually finish a combine about 3 pulses after I cross into the third bar.

Good luck and have fun!

I sincerely hope I don't irritate you with this post. I realize I have lots of nitpicky, probably simpleton style questions here, but I believe in clarification on things that I am not crystal clear on. Thanks for your patience in advance.

The 'newer buffs' would be what? My highest lvl in tradeskilling currently is 13...
So far, with my crafting, I only use 3 buffs for each workstation.... one that increases progress at cost of power(I use this one the most and I never run out of power), and two others... can't quote off the top of my head what they say. I generally start off the sequence with a click to the 'cost of power' buff and click it each tick to push progress. The only time I hit the others is when I have an event; then I counter the event using the buff corresponding to the symbol shown w/ the event and follow right behind it with another 'cost of power' buff. Needless to say, my pristines are not displaying near the consistency that I would like so I'm hoping for insight here.

This is the one I was referring to above as 'cost of power', right? Also, by third progress bar you mean the one that comes after crude(first)>>>shaped(second)?

I don't even know how many sets of buffs I've gotten! LOL So far as I can tell, I only have 3 buffs for each instance at this point... is that correct for lvl 13 scholar? Or do I have more and I don't know it? How will I know when I get more new buffs that I need to integrate into my hotbar?

Yeah yeah, I know lots of you are probably thinking... what a dumba$$ but hey... if I learn what I'm doing thru this I don't mind the taunts. LOL

Sorry... I probably wasn't real clear in my first post...

What I referred to as "your newest buffs" would be the 2nd tier buffs you recieved at level 10. These are used to improve durability.

You recieved a set of 3 of these buffs for each of the three possible routes in your chosen path. So, for example, since you chose scholar, you would have gotten new buffs for jeweler, sage and alchemist. You would not have gotten a set for any of the other 6 skills.

These new buffs all have the same icons as the originals but new names. All are used to counter the same events as the originals.

Here's a tip - you can find them quickly in your knowledge book by hovering your mouse pointer over the icon and checking the color of the buff's name. The new ones should be orange and the older ones will have gone blue.

When you hit level 20, you will recieve a single set of tier 3 buffs for the one path you have chosen to specialize in. So, to continue with our example, if you're gonna be a jeweler, you'll get T3 buffs for that skill and nothing else.

These third tier buffs are turbo charged versions of the tier one buffs and again, share the same icons but also have new names.

Don't be silly... it is never an imposition to explain something to someone who wants to learn and understand. It is my pleasure.
