What's the Carrot?Follow

Hi folks,

I've been playing the game since release. I have a Station "All Access" pass, so I have 8 character slots (actually 12, due to my wife's account). All but 1 of my 8 character slots have a character in them, and I'm working all of them up. My 2 highest characters are a level 20 Conjuror and a level 20 Paladin.

Notice the pattern?

Try as I might, I can *not* for the life of me figure out what the "carrot" is that should be dangling in front of my face pressing me to level higher. In EQ1, the "carrot" was always present. For example: As a necromancer in EQ1, I could say things like "wow, at level 8 I get my first mana regen spell!" and "at level 24 I get my first dark-boned skeleton pet!" (yeah, I'm old school, haha), and "at level 34 I can turn myself into a skeleton!" and "at level 44 I get Dead Man Floating!". All these things were "watershed" events in the life of a necromancer as they levelled. They were things you could point to and look forward to.

What are those things in EQ2 that exist *beyond* level 20? I've looked at all of the spell lists and am left with a feeling of...."bleh".

Sometimes you see a particular class do something and it makes you think "wow, I'd really like to do that too!" So you roll up an alt of that class and have at it. For me, I saw a conjuror turn into a fire elemental and thought "That's too cool!" So I rolled a conjuror. I also saw a Paladin summon a horse and thought "That's too cool!" So I rolled a Paladin. But I'm not seeing anything *beyond* that right now.

So what keeps *you* guys moving forward? When YOU got YOUR level 20 class, what was it that made you want to keep going? What are you looking forward to in the 20's? In your 30's? In your 40's? And what is the reason YOU want to hit level 50 that is specific to your class?

The adventure of getting to a new higher zone and seeing new places keeps me ticking along. Plus a bunch of other things, I was driven to finish my AQ's, now I'm working on Zek and EL access.

Also helping my guild to level up is a constant challenge. Just started a few Heritage quests which not only give great rewards but also huge status towards guild level.

Plus really enjoying crafting, love buying a new book every level and checking out the new recipes.

Many people have posted that the game 40+ is awesome so that's something to work for.

And the added value is to share it with my guildies and friends from EQ1 as we march on together.

I have plenty of carrots.
1. High end content and raids
2. Being able to hit a certain level so I complete 'that' heritage quest.
3. Getting to see every cool zone in the game. Feerrott/CT/Lavastorm/EF/PF/Sol etc is frigging awesome.
4. Getting a 50pp mount
5. Some few spells
6. Be ready for next expansion
7. Getting 'that' level so I can use 'that' gear

At level 20 the game has not really even started IMO, the fun starts when you start doing heritage quests and the real fun starts 40+.
The biggest carrot for me is to be able to hit another tier and you have missed that complety when you only play alts the whole time imo. You havent had a chance to realize that with every new tier the game gets even better.
IMO, focus on one char and you will see what I mean.

A friend of my started EQ2 one week ago, its her first MMO.
She seem to have the biggest carrot of us all.. She is allready lvl 27. Her carrot is to catch up so she can play with us, her RL friends.
She is having a blast since she gets to see new places every day.
She is somewhat of a noob lvling so fast though.

I totally agree on the spells though.. There are to few cool spells you get at higher level.
Im getting group invis at lvl 45 and got Pact of the Cheetah some levels ago (40% runspeed increase). Thats about it.
I do have my fluff spells that are pretty funny tho, but not really a carrot.
So far I can make myself a fairy, a badger and any group member un-natural something (refered to as rust monster by some), at level 45 I can summon a raincloud over someones head to show them Im mad at them.. Pretty lame.. :P

The thought that someday I will get to the zones that have people playing in them that don't worry about carrots. The carrot people will still be in the low 20's :P

Carrots what the heck are you talking about???? I play the game for the fun and for more fun. Getting items is just part of the game.

Heck you want a carrot, go after your AQ's there are 6 carrots for ya :)

Honestly I looked at my conjuror spell list and was quite happy with the potential of the higher level spells.. with each level I enjoying seeing the con level of mobs drop lower.. and lower.. I enjoy seeing things that were scary once upon a time falling like flies.. right now I'm looking forward to being able to solo giants eventually..

my assassin's 50th level abilities are VERY alluring..

I suppose the "Carrot" for me is simply that I enjoy seeing my characters progress.. get stronger with each level and go a little farther than they did the level before...

So your "carrot" then is simply the fun you get out of the game. Whatever you call it, it's still a "carrot".

The thing is Russo, you do yourself a disservice by not playing past level 20. Take one of your toons to TS at least. There is so much more to the game than what you've seen and repeated so far.

Look up the Heritage quests, they're kind of like mini-epics (if you played EQ1) but much more doable.

Look up the access quests for EL and Zek, they're really fun to do.

However you need to be 25 to start these.

For right now, get started on your AQ's.

Just some thoughts Smiley: smile

I have heard alot of people saying the same things about eq2, basically they get bored past lvl 20. By level 20 a good chunk of your quests require you to kill group mobs. Also exp gain slows down big time once you hit lvl 20.

Personally now that I have hit 30 I find myself not even bothering to solo anymore because exp gain is so slow. While grouping it seems to go fairly fast, but soloing it probably takes 3 to 4 yellow mobs to get 1% exp.

Don't really know what to tell you. I have heard alot of people talk about how fun these tier 5 zones are. I have not personally been to any of them, so I can not comment. But I can tell you that the higher level you get the longer it takes to exp and the more stuff you gotta kill to gain a level.

Well there are several Carrots for me. The first real one was getting to 20 and getting my subclass and last name. I always pick a toons name with a last name in mind so it's a big deal for me. (easily amused) Then there was the AQ's. Contrary to how many times I died doing these they can be a whole lot of fun especially if you have good people to hunt with. Then there was the goal of getting to 5k guild status before I dinged 25. Now it's getting to lvl 30 so I can use my new uber sticks of wacking things over the head. After that it will be to get 10k guild status before 35, and finally go into Nektropos castle. Man I've been wanting to go in there for awhile now.

For me as you can see carrots really don't have a whole lot to do with my spells or anything like that. I just go for other goals such as getting x item, being able to go to x zone, kill mob x, or get killed by mob x. XP grinding is fun sometimes but real boring and irritating other times. The thing that makes it fun is if you are really only doing it in spurts to get yourself to a point where you get to do something you view as fun.

What's the Carrot?

It's a tier two veggie... you get them from plains shrubs in Antonica, they're very nice roasted but it may take a while to forage up a stack since... Oh... you meant that metaphorically...

What gets me to log on every night is that I know there will always be something neat to do. If my buddies log on, we can trio our brains out... no one else around, I can always use a little *me* time so it's off to solo and forage for a bit.

Tired of smackin mobs around? I have 3 different characters at or above 20 in three different trade skills and a busy trader to supply so there is always something that needs to be crafted.

Bored with all of that? I can always roll up a new character in a class I've never played and try something totally different on the IoR.

There is always something to do that will be fun and exciting and no doubt, much more interesting than whatever's on TV!!!
