Pros and Cons of this game...Follow

#1 Mar 05 2005 at 8:56 PM Rating: Decent
Hello! I am Ryuiji from Final Fantasy XI, and I`m thinking of maybe switching to this game. But before I make the switch I`d like to hear the pros and cons of this game, compared to FFXI`s, to see if it fits my tastes. Please be truthful, I don`t want to spend money on a game that someone lied to me about. ^^`

Well, the problem is, is that this is a matter of personal taste. Say for instance, they recently made it so that equipment binds on equip, meaning that once you equip a piece of gear, you can only sell it back to a vendor, not another player. This is a con to people that are mostly adventurers, and a pro to people that mostly craft.

Also, there have been so many EQ2 vs. FFXI debates (at least 1 a week), that you may be hard pressed to find anyone that wants to get involved in another one lol.

My best advise is to hit the world wide webbernet and do some reading. EQ2 is a very different game, and it would be hard to list what are pros and cons that we all agree upon.

Thank you! I wanted to link one of the huge FFXI vs. EQ2 conversations, but with no ability to search, I was not able to pull anything out.

Thank you for the thread -- I`m going to hopefully make the switch by the end of this month. ^^

But one thing I want to know -- how many people are still joining this game? I don't want to feel out of place, being pretty much the only new person on my server. Oh, and do you drop items if you die? I certainly don`t want to lose my items I worked hard to get. And is money easy to come by? Or at least easier to earn than in FFXI?

I'm not sure about the newbie zones, although I doubt that there is noone joining though, even if only alts. The game might not be as successful as WoW, it's also not empty. A good tip for the server, when you create a character do this at a time you know you will play often, then you can choose a server that isn't low in population to be sure that you will never play alone.

The death system is simple, you die and you have the choice to either wait for a ressurection (only group members can do this though, for now) or use the revive option: you are revived at a certain point in a zone, you have all items and armour with you but the armour and weapons received damage from dying. Also, there lies at the spot where you died a 'shard', you have to go to this shard and 'absorb' it to regain some xp debt, you do not have to do this, after three days (real time) the shard automatically absorbs but there are negative consequences during those three days. (drop in hp, ac, strength, ...)

Xp-debt: when you die, you do not loose xp. Not a single %, however, you do receive a penalty as you will now have a debt of xp. During a certain amount of xp (usually 3% when no shard, 8 % with shard left I believe) you have to pay for that debt too, meaning that the xp you gain from quests and kills is worth less. So you will never loose a level, but if you die too much in a sort time, it will appear that you are not gaining much xp anymore, if this is too much, you can always leave that character alone for three days after which the debt too is gone.

As for money, it's definitely at the beginning not easy. Things change though when you get higher in level and the common drops from mobs are worth more to the vendors. Tradeskills tend to provide people with the most money, yet this is also quite time consuming.

I personally only have about 2 gold on me at this moment with my 27 paladin, mostly because I waste it on all sorts of things and collection quests, darn expensive those.

Although EQ II has its faults, not that suited for solo persons in comparison with other games yet most definitely not impossible either, graphically very hard on computers, ..., it is definitely worth playing.

Soloing is really boreing once you get up to about lvl 25ish. I am on a low population server and it can be a pain to get a group sometimes. Exp is ALOT faster grouping then soloing, no doubt.

Hehe, i take it your not familiar with FFXI lol. It is much easier to get money on this game than FFXI. This is the main reason, I believe, as to why this game does not have any where near the problem with currency sellers that FFXI does.

Learn a craft, and level it as you level your chacter, and you will have no problem with money. If you take up a craft that can keep you in gear or items (scholar or tailor for spellcaster, weaponsmith for melee classes etc), then you can not only keep yourself in items, which will save you money, you can also sell your stuff to other players.

If you rely totally on adventuring for your money, then you may have some problems, but then again, it is not hard to level up your gathering skills. You can go out and gather resources for crafting, and then sell them off to other players. Not much money to begin with, but by the time you get the tier 3+ areas, you can make a small fortune this way :D

I had a level 36 white mage in FFXI..

so I know VERY well how hard it is to do anything in that game.. WHM at 36th level has a HARD time farming anyplace outside of the newbie zones..

I'll say this for EQ2, farming in the FFXI sense doesn't exist. Making money in EQ2 is a breeze compared to FFXI.

1) tradeskilling quest, when you first get to the main city, join a crafting society and accept a tradeskill quest. It'll be something like.. harvest 15 pelts.. or 15 pieces of wood or 15 pieces of lead.. blah blah. .EASY stuff. since you'll be out there fighting anywho, may as well harvest.

Tier 1 - "newbie zones" these quest pay about 5 silver. enough to pay for your inn room....levels 1 - 10 (ok technically 6 - 10 since you can't go to the city before about 5th or 6th level)

Tier 2 - Antonica or the Commonlands these quest pay 12 silver.. the zones are HUGE with varying degrees of challenge depending on where you are. Around 15th or 17th level you can *somewhat* safely go nearly anywhere in these zones using the skills you have. Youll get these gathering quest for these areas between 11 - 20th level.

Tier 3 - Nektulos Forest or The Thundering Stepps.. this is the highest I'm at right now, my guess is you get these gathering quest between 20 and 30th level.. they pay 48 silver... however at 20th - 22nd harvesting in Nek Forest is far far too dangerous, so I run to the Thundering Stepps which is much safer (characters from Qeynos don't have this Nektulos forest run).

in addition to that..in all this harvesting and gathering you'll very likly bump into a rare harvest item. I've personally found Lapis Lazuli, Rough Coral, and a Silver Cluster.. all three of which sell for between 10 and 15 gold on my servers. A friend of mine has a high level sage, so he took the silver cluster and made "Breeze" Adept III for my Coercer for free. ^_^

so it might *seem* like money is hard to get at lower levels.. but in truth.. it's not, because you need LESS money at lower levels anyway.. harvest quest combined with mob item drops is enough to get you what you need... and even a few things you want.

one of the big stigmas of FFXI were "uber-items" you HAD to have sniper rings, leaping boots and other such silliness and these items were OBSCENELY OVERPRICED and the mobs that dropped them were impossibly overcamped / botted. This mindset and situation doesn't exist in EQ2.. I still have one or two gray items on my characters because the stat gains are excellent and I've yet to find anything better for sale...sure I've found items that have better defense, but as a mage if I'm getting hit I'm allready doing something wrong... I'll keep the +3 INT bonus thanks.

so far for me, the only con I've encountered is the sales model.. you have to be logged in and in your inn room to sell to other players. No offline sales. Since my computers are never turned off.. I just leave the game logged in, go to sell mode and get to sleep, but for people without this option the selling model is a hassle and definite con.
