A question for high level Rangers and AssassinsFollow

#1 Mar 03 2005 at 2:46 AM Rating: Decent
Im a level 17 predator from Qeynos and Im trying to decide which class better suits me. I figured I had plenty of time to decide, being lvl 17, but I just found out that I have to do the betrayal quest now or never if i want to be assassin.

But I already know that Assassins hit harder and rangers have better DPS.But I hear a lot of bad things about rangers at higher lvls(not that they are a bad class)...So basically I want to know what its like to be a ranger at high levels. Can you a melee a lot and still be useful? Is it as costly as they say?Is the class still fun at higher lvls? And im asking these question in a exp group of strangers with no friends on kind of scenario.

I admit, the only thing keeping me from going assassin is the move to freeport(I intend on making a DK in FP sooner or later)but im real easy to please, but this character will be my main and I dont wanna wish I went assassin when i get up there. If ranger is the most fun at lower lvls than I will just make ranger my fourth character.I power lvld a warrior to the lvl70 cap in FFXI(back when it was the cap)and felt I was constantly having to prove my worth to those i didnt know...that wont be the case with ranger would it?

It depends on what you want out of your class honestly. Assassins do the best hits in the game, you will do a bit better sustained DPS with a ranger (not a big difference though) so it's really 6's when it comes to that aspect.

If you like all melee then go assassin, some people don't like having to get at range, and use arrows to do damage, others love it.

You'll be wearing the same armor, using the same weapons etc. so just choose the one that looks funner to you.

Im a 36 Assassin, and i love my character. I routinely hit for over 1000 points damage. Plus right now i have 3 ranged attacks, so i would say go Assassin, because you still get to do some ranged stuff like a ranger. Either way, like said before, pick the class that seems like the most fun to you.

To balance the arg - i love my 35 ranger. To be the best you'd have to buy the best arrows and posoins around, but that is expensive.

Personally i use Feyiron arrows (free from rip spell) and merchant poisons (mort sludge @ 8s) and i do just fine. Regularly sustain 90-100 dps in groups. Which i dont think is too bad :) If any other rangers have other ideas please let me know!

I love my 33 ranger too, not too knowledgable on comparisons with assassins, at the time, I was torn like you were about which way to go with her. However, I really dig the versatility. There might be a few more ranged attacks available, but I don't use all of them with the way I play, I keep about an equal number of melee attacks and ranged attacks out on my hotbar, the ones I really like. Then again, here we go with the versatility again, because I play with the same small group of people from my guild every night, a templar, an illusionist and a conjurer. We lost our "regular" tank, but between the conjurer's pet and I, we can tank pretty darn well too. Battles take a little longer than if we had a real tank, but it's plenty fun and exciting. Other times, when we can grab some guildies and have an MT in our group, I can go back and do the "real" ranger/scout thing and use my bow and backstab and whatnot.

Besides, shadow lunge with stacked poisons (translucent irrepressible vexation and eye of the beholder-stuns when it procs) does some insane damage!

As long as you have a good strategy for it, rangers can do pretty much anything.

Have fun making your choice,

I have a 49 ranger, soon to be 50. I really like the versatility of a ranger in different combat situations. You can stand back at a safe distance and pepper a mob with arrows, and you can also run into a fight and do very good melee damage.... rougly equivalent to an assassin over time. If you are just in it for the high melee hits... go assassin. Otherwise go ranger.

At 49 I can archery pull green/blue mobs and have them down to 50-70% health before they can even get to me to fight. Makes a big differece when soloing.

The key to being a successful ranger is being willing to change tactics to a situation and use different tools when they are appropriate. Your stealth attacks are key to DPS and you absolutley must learn how to use them and HO's in both group and solo situations. When I am soloing I use my Cheap Shot spell to stun, then use a quick stealth/jump over the mob and hit them with a high damage stealth attack from behind while they are stunned. It sounds complicated, but over time you get it down to a science. I generally use 2-3 steath type attacks in any given fight, that can give me about 1000-2000 damage, just in those attacks alone.

Hope that info helps.
