I have had this quest for awhile and every so often I will pop into forrest ruins and mass kill elementals when they are not being hunted (usually the un-camped higher level ones).
Anyways I have gotten everything for this quest but the elemental core essence I believe (one of the quest updates). I know I have killed 300+ elementals in this quest, heck maybe more. Is this quest broken or does it just take a excessive amount of elementals to complete? I have done 4 other mastery quests and they didn't take anywhere near this amount of time to complete. I did a /petition asking if it was bugged and I got a really helpful gm *sarcasim*.
He tells me to follow the quest normally, seek help from other players, do a /bug on it lol. So I don't know what the deal.

I thought you got the quest in the SQ mage tower, but I can't find it, where do I get it?
Its one of the books in there, you gotta be level 25 to get it. Seems kinda silly to have a level restriction since most of your elementals are either low level or high level it seems.

I finished this quest yesterday and I'm sure the problem you have is the same that I have with all the mastery quests. Every mastery quest requires you to kill mobs until you find 3 non tangible items, then examine 6 Lore items.
The problem with all mastery quests is the 3 non tangible items. You have to find all 3 items on one mob or the quest breaks. If you found 1 or 2 out of the 3 non tangibles, then you have to delete the quest and start it again from scratch.
Elemental mastery was the worst for me. I had to restart the quest 4 times until I found all 3 non tangibles on one mob in forest ruins. All in all though, the whole quest only took me 30 minutes from start to finish since the elemental in forest ruins seem to drop Lore items like candy.

You don't have to find all 3 auto-update items at once anymore, and you don't have to wait to examine your dropped items until after finding the auto-update ones. They fixed that on all but one or two last I read, and they may have fixed those last ones already now too.
It's just a time thing. It takes a LOT of time. I ran over to commonlands to get the orc mastery quest as I'd gotten tired of having all the dropped items in my bank taking up space. When I got the quest I promptly examined all the pieces I had then went hunting. About 2 hours later and who knows how many orcs (AoE is FUN! hehe) I had only gotten the brain. So I decided to give up and do other quests. While on my way out of CL I decided to kill one last group. And what do ya know...got the last 2 updates and finished my quest. So they work, they can just take an annoying amount of time/kills.

I just spent an hour doing it, examined all the lore drops first, and got the updates all seperately.

It took me 2 days to finish this quest..I actually made "Hunter of Elementals" I killed so many of them. I deleted the quest 4 times and gathered the lore items 2 times..NEVER thought I'd finish this one. It takes alot of time at least it did for me.
I just went out and started this one earlier, just to prove to myself that it wasn't one of those I thought might have been broken still.
It's not broken. I didn't examine ALL of the dropped ones, just two (why on EARTH would people want 1g+ for those parts?? /boggle). I got 1 of the auto-updates per mob on 3 mobs in a row. Was quite lucky I know, but it still shows that you don't have to get them all at once, and you don't have to get the auto-updates before examining the dropped ones. I've since wracked up quite a number of elemental kills trying to get the REST of the dropped ones, but I know they are there...they are just being stingy *nod*
