Upgrading SpellsFollow

#1 Feb 22 2005 at 10:32 AM Rating: Decent
I have seen that spells can be upgraded. If I understand this correctly, Adept II can be bought from merchants and Adept III from other adventurers who have crafted them.

My question is, where do these merchants set up shop? I have searched for them, but they have eluded me so far.

Scribes in your home cities sell app 2's. They are minor upgrades to the app 1's and not worth buying IMO, especially if you are on a tight budget. App 4's are also player made and are the next best thing to getting the Adept 1 drop.

Yep, you should aim for the highest level version of the spells you use most. You do not need to upgrade in order either. I.e. you can upgrade straight to adpet I from apprentice I, so you don't need to bother with buying the lower level ones if you can find the stronger ones on the market.

Player sold ones can be found on the market board (purchased from your innkeeper, and placed in your room) or by Broker/Fence (NPCs around town).

I think you may be confusing *Adept* with *Apprentice* grade spells.

Spells are available in 3 sets which, (from lowest to highest), are Apprentice, Adept and Master. Each set contains 4 levels - I, II, III & IV.

The Apprentice II spells are vendor purchaced in most scribe shops and from some outdoor merchants Adept grade spells are not. These are player made and mob dropped.

You might also consider crafting your own spells.

While on the Isle of Refuge, I used the tradeskill instance to upgrade Priest Smite from App1 to App3.

Keep i nmind that high level spells will require a higher level Artisan, eventually a Sage.

App 3 and Adept 1 spells are often readily available.

I would suggest that for spells you use a lot, take a look at what App 3/4 or Adept 1 will cost you. Shop for a few days to get the best deal.

If you don't use the spell a lot, upgrade to at least App 2.

App 1 basically means you are using the spell at below average. App 2 is basically average, app3 etc is a little above. Or so its been described to me.

Its often not worth it to upgrade your spells a single level, like App 1 to app 2, except for spells you use all the time and that you just can't find a better upgrade for. Some spells are rarely or ever available as App 3 and up.

You can skip straight from App 1 to Master if you could find it.

Also, take into consideration whether you are going to be using that spell for long. Some spells upgrade a few levels later, its really not worth upgrading to Adept 1 for a spell that you will no longer use in 3 levels, if you are moving through the levels pretty fast.

As I recall, the way it was described was that app 1 is using the spell at 2 levels below your ability, app 2 at your level, app3 2 levels up, and so on.

I'll try and find that post/writeup.

In my case I simply am lucky to use app3 or 4 spells as a 26 conjuror. I hardly ever find any of my adept 1 spells except the provocation and aggitation (which are pet buffs) I see no reason to spend 2 and 3 gold for these spells when I currently got app 4. I mean a pet buff is not really a make or break you situation, at least not goign from app4 to adept 1.

However I am sick of having to either use my lvl 20 adept 1 fire pet, or level 20 freebie hero pet. It would be ncie to actually have a nice adept 3 pet like so many other conjurors somehow can afford, but I honestly don't see how people are getting the 30 and 40 gold to buy these adept 3 pets (which is what they go for) I have yet to upgrade any of my spells past adept 1 due to the outrageous prices people ask for adept 3 spells.

I really think SOE should allow you to buy higher then app 2 spells from a merchant. People expect too much for upgraded spells. Also it seems like many of my spells in adept 1 do not hardly drop. I have checked brokers at least once to three times a day for the past month and have never found several of my spells in adept 1.

I really wish they would do something to lower the cost of adept 3 spells. I would like to have a pet other then my lvl 20 hero.

Here's some discussion on this topic:

And fronglo, there is another choice. Investigate what it takes to make your spell. Get the components to make 2 (or even 3) of that spell.

Politely approach artisans of the appropriate type and level, and offer them 2 (or 3) sets of components if they would be so kind as to let you have 1 of the combines.

Or even get together the components to make one, and politely request that someone make them. If you continue to politely approach players, within a couple of days someone will be willing to run a combine for you.

I'm always amazed at how rude some of these requests are. You wouldn't believe what many of us crafters will do for a truly polite person.

My point, long though it was in the telling, is that you can get the spell you want for a lot less than 40 gp if you do a little of the work on your own, such as researching the spell, getting the appropriate components together, and then locating an artisan of sufficient level to do the spell with a reasonable success rate.

It will still cost you a chunk, unless you find the rare yourself, because I believe that's why the cost is so high, because of the rare component. But it will be a ton cheaper.

I agree that the price of spells is outrageous. However, the sellers may realize that they are asking too much and be forced to lower their prices. And if the market is flooded with spells, the price drops. That is the economic effect SOE wants. Until then, we will be gouged with high prices.

I have not been able to update my three main spells; Seism, Shattered Ground, and Spiked Rain out of App1. It seems to have no impact though, I layer on all my DoT's (even the small ones) send in the pet, and when in a group, we DPS the mob to dust.

I might be able to take on slightly higher con creatures if I upgraded, but I haven't needed to so far. Meaning, I don't take on the really hard mobs solo.

Still, I plan on getting them to App3, App3, and Adept+ as soon as I can. May as well do max DPS.
