New system will now play WOWFollow

#27 Feb 23 2005 at 9:38 AM Rating: Decent
Just a warning, before any of you switch over to WoW I would highly suggest reading the support forums as WoW is buggy and customer support is pretty much non-existent. Many people, including myself, have had issues with the previous patch that they haven't addressed. I mean we can't play the game at all because the latency is way too high. And it all pretty much happened after the patch. So warning, go to www.worldofwarcraft.com and red the support forums first before diving in...gulp.

Well I'd agree on one or two but I disagree totally on most.

We will all have our own personal viewpoints.

I do wonder why EQ2 even bothers giving credits for the musical score when it so undifferentiated and boring. And the graphics will always be a major contention. It is more about style than actual quality. I prefer having a bright interesting fantasy world instead of a photorealistic lansdscape.

WoW gameplay is far superior to EQ2 and I prefer their quests which seem to have some kind of logical progression (as opposed to "I am missing a page from this childrens story book - I'd better kill some timber wolves/badgers etc")

I think the tradeskill systems are very different but I'd be hard-pressed to say which is better. EQ2 has almost created a game within a game. This is fine if Tradeskills spin your wheels but laborious beyond belief if you just like to make the odd thing and gain some benefit from it. The simplicity of the WoW TS system is refreshing.

The real question is when I get home from work do I log into EQ2 or WoW (or indeed EQ). At the moment EQ2 is coming a poor third.

Look, when tradeskilling was lopsided towards the alchemist, everyone made an alchemist alt, right? So why aren't people jumping on the bandwagon with the shifting times and making outfitter alts?

How many of you shop at thrift stores? How many of you really LIKED hand-me-down clothes from your older brother/sister?

OK, so now the game is harder; now you can't just resell everything you bought and never have to work hard to make money. Oh well. Like another poster, I came from FFXI, where making some coin is downright HARD. In EQ2, I've only started 3 weeks ago, and I have made 20+ gold through vendoring and 6 gold through other processes... and have yet to buy anything that costs close to a gold. And I'm a CASUAL gamer. The way I see it, making money is easy. Not TOO easy, but easy enough that it doesn't make sense to complain that you can't pass your old armor to your alts. I understand that it used to be different, but things change and this one is for the better. It's not the best, but do you have another solution on how to make two empty TS classes suddenly useful and viable? Well, clearly SOE doesn't either. But I'm willing to bet if they come up with something better, they'll implement it and attunable will only be temporary.

I highly doubt the attunable armor would be temporary. Imagine SOE switch back to the old way again a few weeks from now. The complains will be greater than EVER. Once again I'm all for changes but they should put some thoughts into these changes before they even implement them. I admit I cannot think of a better way to solve the problem atm but SOE is the company responsible for that, not me. And there are people *hired* to do just this job. The fact that I cannot think of a better idea doesn't mean SOE shouldn't.

For the WoW vs EQ2 thing. I think it's inevitable to compare the two since they're ultimately the two giant MMOs out there for now. People come to here for information about both games so we can decide which to play (people don't usually get to try every game out there. They may not have the money/time for that matter). I realize any comparison would only a mere personal opinion but just for the hack of it I'll give my score to each category:

Everquest 2 vs. World of Warcraft

Graphics - EQ2
Gameplay - WoW
Music/Sound - WoW
Group Content - EQ2
Solo Content - WoW
End Game - n/a
Tradeskill System - Even
Friendly Player Base - Even
Economy - WoW
Quests - Even
Housing - EQ2
Lore - Even
Immersion - Even
Customization - Even

I'll say I'm not biased towards either game as I have both accounts active atm. I've spent more time with EQ2 but that's merely because EQ2 released before WoW. I got both games on their day of release.

Graphics wise, EQ2 clearly have better graphics here, although I must say the art design isn't that great. Even though WoW doesn't have the technology of EQ2 but it compensates by having excellent graphics design.

For gameplay I would say WOW is the winner here for one thing: WoW has better solo contents. Both games have excellent group and raid contents but when I come to soloability, WoW offers more choices. Also there are 8 starting cities in WoW whereas EQ2 has only 2. if you want to create alts with different races, WoW would give more fun because you get to do different quests and explore different areas every time (unless you great an alt with same race, but EQ2 is no difference here). For combat system, I think it's a tie here.

Music/sound is the one thing that I like WoW the most. The sound effect is awesome. Just last night when I was in an inn in Westfall I heard flies flying all over the place! And when you're in a cave or dungeon the effect is spectacular as well. It really makes you feel like you're there. For EQ2, I must also say the voicing of every npc is wonderful. They all sound very real as if coming from the mouth of the npcs. But I spend most of my time fighting outside so if I have to pick between sound effect and voice, I'd definitely pick a better sound effect.

I originally give an "even" score for group content but upon second thought, because EQ2 somehow forces you to group so I'd say EQ2 has better group content. Most quests post-20 are group quests so that's another reason why I pick EQ2 for that.

WoW no doubt has better solo content here. You can solo every class with any pace you want. There are plentiful of solo quests available to everyone.

Since I just got past 20 in both games, I cannot comment on the end-game. But from what I've heard, both games are a bit weak in this department.

Fro tradeskill, both games have their pros and cons. For EQ2, the complexity and combat-like system makes tradeskill to be very fun to do. But SOE constantly changes its take on tradeskill so I'll have to adopt their every new implementation. It could be both good and bad. For WoW, the simplicity of the system makes it a bliss to create new items, but it doesn’t mean it's absolutely easy and without any challenge. I don't see either system to be superior to the other so I give them a tie.

For the servers I'm in, the friendly player-base is about the same for both games. Usually players are nice if you are nice to them but you'd occasionally run into some jackass no matter what. Every game has their fair share of losers.

Economy is about the same in both game but the fact that there is a well implemented AH system in WoW makes it superior to the stay-in-your-room-to-sell-stuff EQ2 system.

Quests are fun to do in both games. Most of them do tell stories of the world and give you a better understanding of the history and background of the games.

It is quite pointless to compare housing here as there is none whatsoever in WoW. Now that EQ2 has house vault makes housing actually meaningful other than just a place for you to sell stuff. But I believe WoW would implement housing in their future expansion, but until then EQ2 is the winner here.

Lore is about even here. Both games have plenty of them.

Immersion is even in both games for me. Their stories really attract me making me wanna know more about the world.

For customization, I originally gave EQ2 a higher score, but then I remember the fact that you rarely see the facial customization in game and people generally wear the same looking armor for their level, whereas in WoW you hardly find a person with the same armor look as yours.
