High Dmg vs. Fast weaponsFollow

#1 Feb 14 2005 at 1:01 PM Rating: Decent
I was wondering what everyones thoughts were about High Dmg weapons with a slower delay or low dmg weapons with a fast delay. My assassin is currently level 25 and you would think that a higher dmg weapon would make for higher dmg backstabs, but it doesnt seem like it does. when i use my higher dmg weapons the overall dmg of my specials seems to be slightly higher and my backstabs tend to be slightly higher too, but then i go and use a fast weapon with low dmg and i backstab for more then i ever have with my high dmg weapons. im just confused and wondering if anyone knows if it doesnt make a diff what weapon your using and if the backstab dmg is reliant on your str.. and does str affect your specials or just normal attacks ?

I found the same thing. Spent 2g on a high dmg/low speed weapon, but found it did the same as others on my sneak attacks. So now i go for fast weapons with decent agility & strength buffs. Always dual wield too.

Yeah, you're melee dps (weapons) have no bearing whatever on your special abilities. Neither do Agil or Str (although agility adds to your pwr pool if you're a scout). If you want to back-stab better, upgrade it to app3, adept1, master, or whatever.

I find that I use short-delay dual-wield weapons almost exclusively. There are times that having the extra AC of a shield is handy (when soloing hard stuff)... so in those cases I just throw on any-old onehander and let my abilities and poison do the killing.

But in case you're wondering, it's usually said that dual-wield weapons are the best damage per second you can get.

So can anyone tell me what's best? Looking at weapons I have been considering the high damage low speed debate. I have been calculating median damage over delay. So:

(((HighDamage - LowDamage) / 2) + LowDamage) / Delay
In an example:
4 - 11 damage; 2.1 delay -vs- 2 - 7 damage; 1.2 delay
-Math-
(((11 - 4) / 2) + 4) / 2.1) = 3.57 damage/second
-vs-
(((7 - 2) / 2) + 2) / 1.2 = 3.75 damage/ second

So... Am I correct? I mean is this really the weapon for me? Do I really want to sacrife high amounts of damage for speed of damage?

Yeah i think so, its all about dps.

As for which weapon, just check em all out with the broker. It all depends what your level is.

Geek alert!!
You can simplify your algebra...

[ (H-L)/2 + L ] / D is the same as

[ (H+L)/2 ] / D

...your welcome :-)

Keep in mind as a scout you'll rarely hit that maximum damage, since your STR is merely average. So if you have the choice between a weapon with <High Minimum Damage and Low Delay>, or <High Maximum Damage and High(er) Delay>... don't hesitate to choose the first.

So when shopping for dual-wield wpns be sure to look at L/D in addition to the averages stated above.

Unless you're a big beefy berserker or something with 150 Str... then you can look more at H/D .

Thanks for the Algebra lesson and the advice.... I hope the math equals the reality. I am tired of dying.

I meant an assassin who uses spear and he says he gets moe damage. I perfeer dueling weapons(using a sword and a dagger atm) was wondering if any assassins noticed a difference with spears.

Well I use a dagger (6-12) / 1.2 and a spear (9-26) / 1.7.

My relevant stats are Str (55) and Agi (102)

Since I hit a lot for the minimum damage, only use that equation

dagger = 6/1.2 = 5
spear = 9/1.7 = 5.3

The dps difference is most likely because my dagger is forged carbonite, and my spear is pristine forged carbonite.

So in my experience (using minimum damage only) a spear is comparable to an equivilent dagger. But feel free to look up some weapons on the broker and do you're own calculations.

What you are not considering is poison... as it is, poison will keep hitting and restarting the timer on the DOT portion... I used to use purple poisons as they had the highest end DOT... what I have learned since seeing my damage on a parser is this... by using fast mele weapons.. and a poison with the smallest dot and biggest front end damage... I am doing way more damage. for instance instead of hitting for say 50 up front and getting two ticks of 88 DOT damage before I hit it againand start it over... now i get 124 up front and 25 dots twice..
Sounds like it all evens out but... consider when you use tripple shot or such.. i usually proc poison on each of the hits.. in a fight when i back up i can lay out 7 arrows in about5 seconds... each of those arrows hit for 124 instead of 50.. then i get a few dots of 50 before i back up and do it again.with good arrows and good poison you can do astounding damage.
Anyway.. if you hit more often, you can proc poison more often.. and thats where you get the bonus.

Excellent point about the poisons.

Ranged weapons seem to proc almost every time. So especially for rangers, the high-DD poison is the best.

As an Assassin who dual-wields, however, I find that I don't actually proc that much. (maybe procing has inverse relationship with weapon delay??) I can almost always get all 3 DoTs to land before my next proc.

Although I haven't actually played my Assassin since I started fooling around with combatstats, so I can't say for sure what the DPS differences are.

If you want to do more damage simply upgrade your skills I recently spent a buttload of cash upgrading a large amount of my skills, best move i have ever made. For instance Shadow Blade, the high damage stealthed attack used to do approximatly 100 damage at app3 I now have Adept 3 and it does roughly 275 on armored baddies to 350 on animals. Upgrade... Its worth it. And if anyone charges you more than 20g youre being ripped off! Or go and get your own clusters and have them made for 50s.

dont look at delay use poisons and fast weapons to get as many procs out as you can you will do major damage, also use your abilites and ranged abilites to do damage
